The Results Are Out!
By Suzanne Pugh , UK Competitor, AIDA 2004 World Freediving Championships.
It was a close competition with everything hanging on the static apnea competition.
Dave Harries, as the 'ultimate alternate' who entered as an independent competitor, beat the UK static record with an amazing performace of 5mins 58 seconds, but only stayed at the top for about 2 hours. He ended as the top independent competitor overall. He was then beaten by Sam Still with a fantastic 6mins 14 seconds! Dave King had a comfortable 5mins 56 and Mark Harris had a tough 5mins 47 seconds. It was tense, but they all pulled through with clean performances, to put them in second place overall.
The UK women gave solid, safe performances with Anne-Marie Kitchen-Wheeler pulling off 4mins 27 seconds, which is a personal best in competition. Hannah Stacey played safe and came up at 3mins 56 seconds, Suzanne Pugh also played safe and came up at 4mins 15 seconds, but was given red card from the judges, which was appealed and won, placing the UK women in 4th place overall.
Fantastic performances from the whole of the team, place the UK as a whole as 3rd in the World.
Congratulations to the whole UK team for fantastic performances.

It has been one of the Association's goals from the outset to create new dive sites in the Red Sea , particularly the Hurghada area, to alleviate the pressure on some of the dive sites and to add to the attraction of Hurghada as a dive destination.
The Red Sea 's First Artificial Wreck Reef
At long last the Red Sea now has its first artificial wreck reef. The Red Sea Association, with the continued support of HE General Saad Abo Rida Governor of the Red Sea, have made this a reality.
To this end, the idea of an artificial wreck reef seemed the perfect answer, as it will not only create a new reef under disciplined environmental practices, but will also provide the area with a new and exciting wreck dive that is accessible to most levels of divers, from beginners to technical penetration divers, in a safe environment.
With funding obtained from the NGO service centre, with the full support and resources of the Red Sea Governorate and with the help and approval of the Red Sea protectorate office in Hurghada, the cargo ship Heba Allah, was the ship of choice. Current owner, Mr Mohamadi Hoeidek, did not hesitate to donate the ship as a gift to the Red Sea Governorate, who in turn earmarked it for this ground breaking project by the Association under the supervision of admiral Adel Hegab, the newly appointed general coordinator for investments and environmental affairs at the Red Sea Governorate. The ship is 51 meters long, 8 meters in width and an impressive 300 tons of dead weight. As a former cargo ship it will make an ideal wreck dive with lots to discover in and around it.
The Hebbat Allah was sunk on 10 th August by the Egyptian Navy in its new home south of Erog Giftun. The ship has landed with even keel on the bottom at max depth of 44 metres with the bridge upright at around 25 metres with excellent visibility.
The new wreck is now being prepared and secured for diving and dive centres will be advised of its official opening as a new dive site with relevant guidelines and directives for safety.
