jobs and hints & tips for easy living in The Red
Animal Center, Hurghada
The Bluemoon Animal Center in Hurghada is
currently operated on a small scale by Monique and
Salah Gad el Karem. However, a much larger operation
is under development and due to open in the near future.
The new center will house all types of rescued, unwanted
animals, from dogs to donkeys. The new center will
not only house the animals but will also be a place
of education for everyone to visit and spend time.
The center will operate a cafe and will have an open
petting area for children. Monique and Salah wish
to take the education side of the center further,
by visiting schools to educate the children on good
In the meantime, The Bluemoon Animal Center is very
busy re-housing currently unwanted dogs, cats and
birds, and currently has 5 dogs, 3 cats, and 16 birds.
The center also has a very strong castration programme.
Each animal brought into the centre is castrated and
tagged before being released.
Monique is concerned about the amount of animals being
brought into Egypt from overseas that are not equipped
for the harsh Egyptian climate. Many of these animals
are difficult to care for and become a burden when
their owners wish to go on holiday and so they are
just driven to a different location and let loose
on the streets to fend for themselves.
If you would like to help the Bluemoon Animal Center
the center is always looking for volunteers.
The center can be contacted on (065) 543492
or 010 5460049 and by email at email@example.com

The Zoo at Giza is densely inhabited
by various animal and plant species, in
an area of about 83 acres. It is located
near the west bank of the Nile and it's
northern tip overlooks Cairo University.
It is not far from down town Cairo and
is linked by numerous buses. The Zoo is
under the supervision of the Ministry
of Agriculture in Egypt.
The Zoo is a
habitat for many species of animals and
birds which are now extinct in Egypt.
Among these are mountain goats and rams,
Egyptian gazelles and heron.
The zoo is comprised of five hilly areas;
the greatest called the Citadel Hill which
was constructed in 1867. It is decorated
with various statues of the extinct Fayoum
rhinoceros, crocodiles and strange birds.
Its plateau is covered with a small park
that could be reached by means of a spiral
path. It comprises plant-covered walks,
a number of streams, a hall in its center
as a resting place and various statues
of birds and reptiles made of cement and
pebbles. The streams flow through caves
and into waterfalls that lead to a lake
with two islands connected with a wooden
bridge. In front of the lions' house there
are two artificial hills connected with
a rare iron suspended bridge, the only
one in Egypt.
are now several activities, suitable for
all ages. There is a children’s
playground beside the Children’s
Cinema Theatre, donated by the First Lady
Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, and the Children’s
Library, for 4 to 8-years-old, consisting
of computers specifically for animal,
environment and nature education, with
electronic books that give sounds of various
animals at the touch of a button, as well
as displays their images in the books.
You can visit the zoo at any time during
the year. Tickets cost 25 piasters per
individual and the entrance fee is the
same for everyone. The Zoo is open to
the public in summer from 8am to 7pm and
in winter from 8am to 5pm. During Ramadan,
the hours differ - the gates open to the
public from 9am to 3pm or 4 pm depending
on the season.
