Tomb Find Proves Lion's Sacred Role

Scientists have found the first complete skeleton of a lion in a tomb in the Nile valley - a discovery they say confirms the animal's sacred status in ancient Egypt.

The adult male skeleton was buried about 2000 years ago. It was unearthed at Saqqara near the entrance to the much older tomb of Maia, the wet nurse of King Tutankhamun.

The animal was mummified and buried among the cats' catacombs that were created in the last century BC at a site dedicated to the feline goddess Bastet. The undisturbed skeleton, found lying on a rock with its head facing northwards and with its body orientated to the east, confirmed that lions were alive in Egypt in the last centuries BC. It was bred in captivity, and probably died naturally.

Although the skeleton was found in a tomb dating to about 1430 BC, it was buried much later when the tomb was reused.

Do you tell stories to your children? Would you like to do it better?

Alec Williams, a renowned UK storyteller and Vice Chair of the School Library Association, will be giving a workshop for parents and their children at the British Council in Agouza on Saturday 24th January at 10.00 a.m.

He will look at practical techniques for bringing alive the words and pictures in your favourite children’s books. The first part of the workshop will be for parents only. During this time your children will be provided fun activities to keep them occupied. Once you have improved your storytelling skills your children will join you for you to practice what you’ve learned. The first sessions will be in English, but you can use a favourite book in any language for practising.
