World's Largest Swimming Pool to Be Built in the Egyptian Desert

Resort News

The world's largest pool, in the middle of the Egyptian desert

The world's largest pool, in the
middle of the Egyptian desert

Think big and build big is the premise behind the tourist revolution of Crystal Lagoons, which recently announced the creation of the world's largest pool, in the middle of the Egyptian desert. The company is working with its local partners, Pyramids Plaza and Citystar Holding, on a US$5,500 million project named City of Stars.

Crystal Lagoons announced the construction of twelve giant crystal clear lagoons at the Sharm El Sheik beach, the biggest of them measuring 8.8 hectares in size. The world's largest pool is currently in San Alfonso del Mar, Chile, and has an area of 8 hectares. This one-kilometer-in-length behemoth -- also built by Crystal Lagoons -- will soon be surpassed by its Egyptian relative, which is expected to be finished around July 2009.

The project, located at 3 kms from the Red Sea, involves a master plan of 30,000 home units, hotels, a museum and a shopping center. This will be the first of four tourist projects that Crystal Lagoons has formally agreed with its Egyptian partner and that will be emplaced in Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Alexandria.

A national centre for the game

A national centre for the game

Golf and shopping with a difference were a pleasant surprise for Anna Blackaby along Egypt’s Red Sea coast
Modern face of an ancient realm

Given the fact that the area around Hurghada on Egypt’s Red Sea hasn’t seen a drop of rain in six years it’s quite strange to find myself learning the basics of golf on land that, just two years ago, was desert.

But with a bit of effort, and three million litres of water a day, the desert can be made to bloom.

The Egyptian government plans to make the area a national centre for the game and where there are now three golf courses in the area around the resort of Madinat Makadi, there should be around nine in two year’s time.

As a golf virgin, I am grateful we have pro-golfer Gamal to demonstrate the basics, which he does with patience and a touch of sternness which stems from his obvious passion for the game.

It turns out I’m really bad at it, but that doesn’t matter because it leaves plenty of time to sit by the pool in the baking January sun and read up on the treasures that lie in wait in the second part of the trip taking us to the city of Luxor, built on the site of the Ancient Egyptian site of Thebes on the banks of the Nile.

Just knowing that there are still undiscovered tombs which could be brimming with Tutankhamun-style treasures – such as that of Cleopatra or the Pharoah Ramses VIII or – is enough to bring the grave-robbing spirit out in me. Arriving in Luxor, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the vast imposing complexes at Karnak and Luxor built by this mysterious civilisation over the 3,000 years they thrived on the banks of the Nile.

Investment property at golf resort in Egypt

An 18-hole golf course, a yacht marina and dozens of shops, bars and restaurants

An 18-hole golf course, a yacht
marina and dozens of shops,
bars and restaurants

Egypt has long been a popular tourist destination for British holidaymakers, but it has steadfastly remained below the radar for property investors - possibly because of its perceived instability. This could soon change: in an attempt to boost demand from British buyers, some Egyptian developers are offering credit-crunched UK investors extra incentives to part with their cash. For example, Orascom, the developer behind the El Gouna resort on the Red Sea Riviera, will pay buyers a return of 3.25 per cent - more than they might get if they left their money in a savings account - if they are prepared to pay for their property upfront rather than in stages.

El Gouna is a short drive north of Hurghada, one of Egypt's property hotspots, which teems with high-rise apartment blocks. El Gouna is much more attractive, with plenty of open spaces and miles of beaches. The 9,000-acre purpose-built resort has been developed by Orascom, which is controlled by the billionaire Sawiris family. Building started in 1990: there are now 14 hotels and more than 2,000 villas and apartments, as well as an 18-hole golf course, a yacht marina and dozens of shops, bars and restaurants. The next phase of development is Ancient Sands Golf Resort, a 650-acre site whose focus will be a Karl Litten-designed golf course.

Numerous caves which are home to
sweeping schools of glassfish

Shark Observatory - Ras Mohammed National Park

It used to be that you could see sharks from the nearby observatory cliff in large numbers here, however most sharks have long ago been moved to Shark Heaven by the shark trawlers.

However, despite the absence of hundreds of sharks, Shark Observatory is still a fantastic dive. The location is literally a vertical wall that extends down to 90m sloping outwards only at its foot.

There are numerous caves which are home to sweeping schools of glassfish as well as very impressive overhangs and huge gorgonian fans. Coral growth is excellent, with a variety of both soft and stony species, and extends upwards in very interesting formations. The swarms of pelagic such as jacks, trevallies and barracuda, as well as a selection of die-hard resident sharks, still make Shark Observatory a fantastic Sharm El Sheik dive.

Shark Observatory Reef Basics: Wall dive
Depth: 5 - >40m
Visibility: 10 - 30m
Currents: Strong
Surface Conditions: Generally calm
Water Temperature: 22 - 28°C
Experience Level: Intermediate - advanced
Number of Dive Sites: 1
Diving Season: All year round
Distance: 15 km south of Sharm El Sheikh
Access: Daytrips and liveaboards

Travel Packing Tips

Lifestyle
Practice of Yoga poses increases flexibility, helps fitness, and promotes a healthy and natural lifestyle

If you select one base color,
everything will go with
everything else

1- Pick one basic color that doesn’t show dirt (such as black) then brighten with lightweight accessories like scarves. Make sure each item of clothing can be worn with any other item and will match with all your shoes. “I always stick to a single color scheme when I pack: black and white, khaki and navy, denim and red. It not only eliminates the need to pack multiple pairs of shoes and a variety of accessories, it ensures that I can mix and match as needed based on the weather, the day’s activities, or the formality of the establishments I’m visiting," says Kim Knox Beckius, freelance travel writer. “If you select one base color, everything will go with everything else and you can bring less pieces overall,” adds Robin Robinson, travel editor for the Toronto Sun.

2- Wear your coat and heaviest pair of shoes on the plane and always get by with just two pairs of shoes. “With my heaviest shoes, coat, sweater et al on my back and feet, I can peel off as much as I want on the plane and get by with packing lighter clothes," says Lorraine O’Donnell Williams, travel writer.

3- Pack clothes that can be washed in a sink and that will dry overnight. “Synthetic microfiber clothing lightens your load, can be washed – and dried -- overnight and never wrinkles.” says Amy S. Eckert, freelance travel writer. “Fast-drying clothes you can wash in your hotel room are the foundation of the go-light lifestyle.” points out John Flinn, another freelance travel writer.

4- Buy new lightweight luggage. Many older bags are very heavy by themselves. Advancements in plastics and materials have led to durable, strong bags that weigh a fraction of their older counterparts. “Many of the new, lightweight suitcases are every bit as strong as the older designs with a heavy metal frame," says Mary Ellen Botter, a travel editor.
