Ecotourism outweighs irresponsible travel |

Ecotourism is slowly developing across the world, as people begin to recognise the effects that irresponsible travelling can have on third-world communities and the environment.
But some countries are still at risk from the damaging effects that tourism has on local communities, such as water abuse, poverty, and environmental damage.
Kay Taylor discusses the implications of irresponsible tourism in under-developed countries, outlines the benefits of ecotourism, and offers ways in which travellers can contribute towards improved working and living conditions for indigenous communities.
Each year, two million people visit Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt, spending their money on local foods and souvenirs. Yet only 3% of this money remains in the local area and contributes towards Sharm El-Sheikh’s community development, because such resources are transported into the country rather than sourced locally.
This also results that the area produces ten times more waste than elsewhere, which vastly harms the environment.
This situation is only likely to worsen as tourism expands, as the majority of tourists are arguably unaware of the harrowing effects their holiday is having on the local people of the areas they are visiting.

ON a sunny morning in November, I found myself sitting on the pillion seat of a stationary brand new Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide in Egypt. We were part of a group of ten Harleys that were heading from Port Ghalib on the Red Sea to Luxor on the River Nile, but there were two ways to get there. Our back up truck and fuel supply had already headed off in one direction but the police escort had decided to take us in the other.
As we waited for the dilemma to be resolved, a mini van whizzed passed us with the rear door wide open and suitcases and soft bags were flying out onto the road; they belonged to us! Our Egyptian adventure had begun.
By the time the bags had been re-loaded, the route issue had been resolved and we set off northwards in staggered, group riding formation.
Eight of the bikes were the 2009 range of Harley-Davidson touring bikes: a Heritage Softail, 3 Road Kings, 3 Street Glides and the imposing Ultra Classic Electra Glide, specifically designed for touring with a pillion rider in maximum comfort. This impressive range of chrome and steel is about lifestyle and we were off on a “Nile Cruise” with a difference: on wheels instead of on water.

1- Kite Piloting, Launching and Landing
To be a kitesurfer, you have to be a good kite pilot. Practice with a trainer kite before getting your kitesurf kite. Most trainer kites are 2 line foil kites. You launch and land the trainer kite using the launching and landing instruction for foil (below). Also, you turn the kite to the left by pulling on the left end of the control bar and turn the kite to the right by pulling on the right end of the control bar. If you have never flown a trainer kite, read the Control Devices section of the Equipment page for information.
Different kites have different launching, landing and water relaunching techniques. We assume that you can get such information directly from your kite vendor. If you are using traditional inflatables, flat inflatable or foils, you can use the following self launching and landing instructions:
Kite Launching and Landing
Launching Traditional Inflatable (on land or snow):
1. Put the kite down on sand, leading edge toward the wind, one tip of the kite is on the sand the other tip is in the air. The kite looks like a vertical "C" with the leading edge facing the wind.
2. Fold the kite tip and put enough sand (or snow) on it to keep it from moving around.
3. Hold the control bar and position yourself such that kite is at the wind window edge respective to your position (the kite is around 70, 80 degrees to the left or the right of you with its leading edge facing the wind).
4. If you use a 4 line inflatable, adjust your trim strap to put the kite in a depowered mode.
5. Attach the safety leash to your wrist or harness. Don't hook in or shackle in to your kite until after you have launched your kite and get into deep water.
6. Pull on the control bar and the line nearest to the ground to unfold the tip and release the kite from the sand.
7. Pull the top line (the line farthest from the ground) to move the kite up.
