How much?
It’s the Pound but not as we know it. The Egyptian Pound is a bargain for Brits – sporting activities, spa treatments, shopping and dining are utterly affordable. Even five-star hotels often charge four-star prices. Currency: Egyptian Pound –
£E 7.17 to the £
FOR COUPLES
Watching the sun-rise over ancient temples from the deck of your boat, you’ll find a Nile cruise is an unforgettable experience. Holidays, which are available from some tour operators at fantastic prices, usually include return flights, cruise on a full-board basis and most excursions. Check out specialists Discover Egypt (www.discoveregypt.co.uk), Kuoni (www.kuoni.co.uk) and www.nile-cruises-4u.co.uk
FOR PAMPERING
Fabulous seafood restaurants, boutiques, ritzy casinos, spa treatments, private beaches and high-class hotels can all be found in Sharm El Sheikh, El Gouna, Soma Bay, Marsa Alam and more. Check out the options by contacting the Egyptian State Tourist Office on 0207 7493 5283 or visit www.egypt.travel
FOR FAMILIES
Take the nippers to check out just about every kind of marine life that thrives in the Red Sea. They can also get up close (but not too close) to camels in the desert and play on pristine beaches. Many hotels have special kids’ clubs – try First Choice (www.firstchoice.co.uk/egypt).
FOR EXPLORERS
Experience a few days in classical Cairo, with its pyramids at nearby Giza, and then in Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast. An express train connects the cities in two hours. Explore the desert on organised day trips by jeep or camel treks in the footsteps of the Bedouin. Check out activity holidays specialist Exodus (www.exodus.co.uk)
FOR DIVERS…
The Red Sea is one of the world’s premier dive sites and has more scuba diving schools than you can shake a haddock at. Beginners can get their PADI certificates here in less than a week and then the undersea world is your oyster. Check out www.redseacollege.com, www.cameldive.com and www.scubatravel.co.uk
…AND DRIVERS
El Gouna, a beautiful resort, is just 25 minutes from Hurghada and has one of Egypt’s best golf courses. There are facilities for every level. Special packages are available from Longwood Holidays (www.longwoodholidays.co.uk).
FLIGHTS
Charter flights from most UK regional airports head into Sharm, Hurghada and Luxor. Scheduled airlines BA and Egyptair have daily flights to Cairo.

Instant weekend ... Aqaba |
| Tourism News |
 |
|
Go now for cloudless skies, superb diving and snorkelling, long, sandy beaches and top-rated hotels
Why go now?
Because Aqaba's weather forecast for the next three or four months is cloudless skies, temperatures around 25-30C and low humidity. This modest town on Jordan's Red Sea coast could not be more different from its brash Egyptian neighbours Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada: locals outnumber tourists, souks remain authentically grungy - and the whole area is a duty-free zone.
Aqaba offers superb diving and snorkelling, long, sandy beaches and top-rated hotels. Sunsets are exceptional and framed by rugged mountains, palm trees and shimmering water. Plus, the stone-carved city of Petra and deserts of Wadi Rum are on the doorstep.
Checking in
The swanky Radisson SAS (00 962 3201 4448; radissonsas.com) has just opened on Tala Bay, 15km south of town, offering airy, minimalist rooms (from £137) and numerous pools, lounges and restaurants. For its palm-fringed beach, excellent restaurants and unbeatable city-centre location, the Mövenpick (00 962 3203 4020; movenpick.com) is a great choice, with doubles from £142, while Captain's (00 962 3206 0710) is a sleek, stylish three-star just back from the beach, doubles from £78. If you're on a budget, hang out at the hippyish Bedouin Garden Village (00 962 77 762 7933; bedouin-hotels.com), where simple, well-kept doubles cost around £23.
Hit the streets
Start at the 14th-century Mamluke fort on the beach: its twin-towered gateway features an Arabic inscription recording renovations made around 1510. In 1917, an Ottoman garrison was expecting an attack from the sea when an Arab army under TE Lawrence stormed in from the mountains. Alongside, the Aqaba Archaeological Museum (00 962 3201 9063) displays medieval Chinese ceramics and the first milestone of a highway built by the Roman emperor Trajan to link Aqaba with Syria.
There's world-class diving and snorkelling on offer. SeaStar (00 962 3201 3735; aqabadivingseastar.com) and Dive Aqaba (00 962 79 660 0701; diveaqaba.com), among others, can host anything from an hour's snorkelling to week-long Padi dive courses.

Raiders of the lost art |
| Culture News |
 |
|
They are ancient Egypt's greatest tomb paintings, yet they were created for a middle-ranking official by an unknown artist. As the Nebamun panels go on display in the British Museum, Robin McKie reveals a tale of exquisite craftsmanship and a 3,500-year-old tabby cat
Enter the British Museum's new Egyptian gallery and you will be struck by a line of painted panels of unexpectedly rich colouring and extravagant composition. On one panel, a pair of naked female dancers, their fingers interlaced, glide sinuously before a crowd at a banquet. Beside them, a flute player stares out from the painting, her hair shimmering as if she is swaying to the music. Each figure is distinct, individual and freely drawn, their proportions and detail captured perfectly.

Mummy thought to be Queen Seshestet found in Egypt |
| Culture News |
 |
|
Egyptian archaeologists have found the remains of a mummy thought to be that of Queen Seshestet, the mother of a pharaoh who ruled Egypt in the 24th century BC, the government said on Thursday.
After five hours spent lifting the lid of a sarcophagus in a pyramid discovered south of Cairo last year, they found a skull, legs, pelvis, other body parts wrapped in linen, and ancient pottery, the government's antiquities department said.
They also found gold wrappings which would have been put on the fingers of the mummified person. Grave robbers ransacked the burial chamber in ancient times and stole the other objects.

El-Hadary Mulls Over Return To Egypt |
| Sports News |
 |
|
According to FC Sion goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary, Egyptian club Ismaily have made an offer for his services.
"Ismaily opened talks with me over a possible move," disclosed the 35-year-old, who is currently nursing a knee injury.
"They also tabled an official bid but Sion are yet to respond because they are having their winter vacation."
He added: "Ismaily are a big club, but Sion will have the last word on my future."
Ismaily's top official, Mohamed Salah Abou-Greisha, said in a television interview: "Ismaily started negotiations with Sion after El-Hadary revealed his willingness to accept the offer.
"We are yet to know Sion's financial demands. We can discuss the details when they table their offer."
The possibility of the 102-time Egypt shot-stopper returning to Ahly has been shot down by the Cairo club.
Ahly official Hadi Khashaba insisted El-Hadary will not be welcome back to the club he left in acrimonious circumstances.
The international goalkeeper completed his deal with Sion nearly a year ago without the consent of Ahly by invoking Article 17 of FIFA regulations that allows a player to cancel his contract after a 'protected period'.
It was a move that cost him a lot of his huge popularity, particularly among Ahly fans.

Christmas Eve a journey back in time at the Steigenberger Al Dau Beach Hotel |
| |
 |
|
It was not the traditional setting of a White Christmas, but everybody agreed that Christmas celebrations made for a wonderful time at the 5-star deluxe Steigenberger Al Dau Beach Hotel. This year, more than 600 guests from all over the world journeyed back in time and enjoyed special moments at the beautifully decorated Christmas tent, where the Christmas story was read and then unfolded through an explicitly performed play where Josef & Maria, angels, shepherds, kings and even live animals like a donkey, camels and goats, all demonstrated a beautiful spectacle of the birth of Jesus. The air was filled with Christmas spirit and cheer, Christmas carols were sung, and finally Santa Clause made a special appearance, giving each and every child their own little gift.

The divemaster guide will know
to wait for
your "okay" sign until they start the tour
|
Scuba Diving: Tips & Tricks From a Former Scuba Instructor and Divemaster
As I mentioned before, no instructor can possibly cover every single situation you're likely to get into as a scuba diver. What I'm trying to do here is go over some of the things that almost every diver will experience at some point, that I have not yet seen covered in-depth in your basic open water scuba class.
1- Ear Problems
Many people have trouble clearing their ears as quickly as others. Many divers have felt the added pressure (no pun intended) of feeling like they are holding the whole group up as they try frantically to get that "click" that equalizes pressure between the inner and outer ear. Some are foolish enough to descend with the group anyway and experience damage or rupture to their eardrum accompanied by severe vertigo. If your ears take a bit longer to equalize, tell the divemaster or instructor about it beforehand. She or he can help you to buddy up with someone else who takes longer to clear. Also, if it's a guided dive the divemaster guide will know to wait for your "okay" sign until they start the tour. Tell your dive buddy, especially if you can't find someone else with ear problems. Make sure they know to wait for you instead of swimming off.
If you have a head cold or sinus problems that cause your nose to be stuffed up, you have 2 options: reschedule the dive for when you're better, or take a NON-DROWSY over-the-counter medicine to clear out your passages. If there is too much mucous in your sinus cavities, you aren't going to be able to equalize, period. That's the law of physics.
If you're already in the water and find you can't equalize, go up a couple of feet at a time (slowly!) pinching your nose and trying to blow air out through your nostrils-GENTLY as you continuously exhale. This is a thin membrane of skin, not a PVC sink drain to blast out. Don't give up right away. Keep ascending slowly while trying to clear. If you can't do it, or feel pressure and pain in your ears, abort the dive. If you told your group about your ear problems, they'll be waiting for you. Signal your buddy or the scuba guide by pointing to your ear and shaking your head "No". Make sure your buddy doesn't go on alone. Never try and tough it out--you will destroy your eardrums, literally.

Six tips for helping you get back into shape |
Lifestyle |
 |
|
|
Fitness experts recommend the
stability ball,
normal sit-ups and male/female push-ups
|
1- Working out: Gyms and fitness centres boast that January is their busiest month, when regular members return and new ones join.
Those like Curves, offer full-body fitness programmes. Their combination of resistance and cardio-exercises are designed to protect muscle, increase metabolism and burn fat. Most gyms offer personal fitness consultancy and dieticians targeting individual’s problem areas.
2- Power walking: This is fast- paced walking, often favoured by people who cannot go to gym. It burns calories and tones leg muscles. Tips on posture, if followed closely, make for a stronger back and equal distribution of weight across the body.
For home exercise, fitness experts recommend the stability ball, normal sit-ups and male/female push-ups.
3- Healthy eating: This starts at the shops, local nutritionist Elma Goduka explains. She says trolleys should be filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, and meals should be balanced and well-spaced to allow adequate digestion.
4- Setting of goals: Deciding how you hope to look, feel and weigh within specific periods is also important. Such goals should not only be realistic, but they should also be kept as simple as possible and customised to fit in with a person’s lifestyle.
5- Hard work and determination are key, fitness instructor Sandy Martin says. “Depriving yourself of the good things in life demands great strength.”
6- Pat yourself on the back, says Virgin Active member Thando Mangxola.
“Allow yourself to feel good and bask in your success.”
