Focusing on cleaning reefs that are accessible by daily snorkelling and diving vessels

Focusing on cleaning reefs that are accessible by daily snorkelling and diving vessels

Red Sea liveaboard operator blue o two has donated one of its vessels to conservationists running reef cleanups for the whole of January.

Following a series of successful cleanups run from liveaboard trips in 2008, blue o two is donating its northern Red Sea vessel M/Y Blue Fin to the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) during January.

The operator is also offering divers reduced prices on week-long trips. Guests joining the subsidised trips take part in cleanups of the Egyptian Red Sea's most littered shorelines between regular holiday dives, and can attend on-board seminars by marine biologist and dive guide Elke Bojanowski.

Together with HEPCA, blue o two is focusing on cleaning reefs that are accessible by daily snorkelling and diving vessels. It says these areas are prone to more rubbish being thrown overboard by visitors. Blue o two has won the Responsible Tourism Award for Best In a Marine Environment for the past two years, and the Hayah reef project is the latest environmental scheme to be supported by the operator.

'When the idea was born, we were not sure if people would be interested in giving up some of their precious holiday time to clean reefs and learn about global ocean devastation,' said Natalie Tyler of blue o two. 'How refreshingly wrong we were. We have now operated four successful trips. Then we devoted M/Y Blue Fin to the project for January. Critics might say that the only attraction in these safaris is the subsidised price, but in talking to our guests I don't believe this is entirely true.'

As part of the Hayah project, conservationists plan to collate statistical analysis of the rubbish collected, such as weight and type of waste found. 'We schedule in two to three cleanups a week,' said Tyler. 'Divers go down in groups with the aim of collecting as much removable rubbish as possible. Before each clean, our divers are briefed on the importance of not removing rubbish that has become a marine creature's home. The Hayah project is funded purely by blue o two. The end result is affordable ecotourism.' Amr Ali, HEPCA chairman, said: 'As the sense of responsibility grows bigger among divers and travellers, soon we will see the day when the main factor in choosing a diving or tour operator will be the social responsibility of that operator towards the community, nature and the globe.'

Strong growth in passengers

Strong growth in passengers

A report by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and ABTA revealed that many cost conscious air travellers are seeking to save money by heading to countries outside of the Eurozone. This year travellers to destinations such as Dalaman and Bodrum in Turkey and Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada in Egypt are set to eclipse the strong growth in passengers achieved during 2008 to these areas. Savings on the exchange rate coupled with cheap airflights to these destinations allows holidaymakers to still plan a family holiday.

Satellites unearthing ancient Egyptian ruins

The enclosure wall of the Great Aten temple in Egypt, as seen from the QuickBird satellite.

Archaeologists believe they have unearthed only a small fraction of Egypt's ancient ruins, but they're making new discoveries with help from high-tech allies -- satellites that peer into the past from the distance of space.

"Everyone's becoming more aware of this technology and what it can do," said Sarah Parcak, an archaeologist who heads the Laboratory for Global Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. "There is so much to learn."

Images from space have been around for decades. Yet only in the past decade or so has the resolution of images from commercial satellites sharpened enough to be of much use to archaeologists. Today, scientists can use them to locate ruins -- some no bigger than a small living room -- in some of the most remote and forbidding places on the planet.

In this field, Parcak is a pioneer. Her work in Egypt has yielded hundreds of finds in regions of the Middle Egypt and the eastern Nile River Delta.

Parcak conducted surveys and expeditions in the eastern Nile Delta and Middle Egypt in 2003 and 2004 that confirmed 132 sites that were initially suggested by satellite images. Eighty-three of those sites had never been visited or recorded.

Time in the sun: UK growers enjoy the Egyptian climate

A congress of UK growers convened in Egypt for a post-season review last month.

The Summerfruit Company, part of Redbridge Worldfresh Limited, held its post-season growers’ review in Cairo, Egypt. The event was attended by over 40 growers and support staff from the UK.

The tour to Egypt, which took place on 7-10 Nov, involved a farm visit along the Nile Delta, designed to provide UK growers with an appreciation of the Egyptian growing techniques and how the farms cope with the challenges presented.

Richard Parke-Davies, managing director of The Summerfruit Company, said: “Cairo was selected as this year’s venue to mark our significant achievements in Egypt, in particular with [our] exclusive Redeva strawberry varieties.

“In excess of 60 per cent of the volumes we now import from Egypt are Redeva varieties. This amounts to a staggering 300 fedans (approximately 320 acres) worth of advanced Redeva material being grown in Egypt this coming season – an impressive feat given the timescales involved.

“The Suzana variety has been performing particularly well over a number of years. The yield suits the grower and the organoleptic attributes suit the consumer. Additionally, our Red Merlin and Red Delight varieties are already producing fruit in Egypt and both show great promise,” he said.

Local sports in 2008: achievements, failures and disputes

Cameroon’s Gille Augustin Binya, right, challenges for the ball with Egypt’s Mohamed Abou-Trika during their African Cup of Nations final soccer match in Accra, Ghana Sunday Feb. 10, 2008.

Sports in 2008 was more like a fluctuating chart: football and individual sports’ victories intertwined with Olympic disappointments and administrative conflicts on the local scene.

“Winning the African Cup, women squash team victory breaking the dominance of England and Australia for more than 30 years, and men’s squash rankings are the most remarkable achievements,” Inas Mazhar, head of sports section at Al Ahram Weekly. told Daily News Egypt. In team sports, the national football team successfully defended their 2006 title and won the African Cup of Nations for the sixth time to remain the champions of Africa for another two years.

On the club level, Al-Ahly won its sixth African title but concluded the year with a disappointing show at the Club World Cup finishing sixth out of seven participating teams.

Their Cairo rival Zamalek won their first title in four years by winning the Egypt Cup but it was downhill from there. The team failed to impress in other championships, often barely trying to end their winless streaks. On the administrative level, the club’s elections were cancelled after former president Mortada Mansour challenged its legitimacy. Shortly after, Mamdouh Abbas, who was leading the appointed board, quit, leaving the club in a state of instability.

Stop from time to time to consider if you're tense

Stop from time to time to consider
if you're tense

ESSENTIAL IMPROVERS TIPS!

STANCE
RELAX! This one tip opens most of windsurfing's technique doors. Whatever you're doing stop from time to time to consider if you're tense and trying to use muscles that really need not be working.

PINK KNUCKLES. Whether in or out of the harness, you will not go any faster if you squeeze the boom until your knuckles turn white. Tension in the upper body stems from the hands so relax your grip and your body relaxes with it.

THUMBS OVER. And a way to help relax the arms, use OVER grip (fingers resting over the top of the boom) and rest your thumbs over the boom as well. As soon as you wrap them under the boom, you're in squeeze mode.

BOTTOM AWARENESS! Right trough the levels, the hips and bottom are your key body parts. No matter the wind strength, always check that your shoulders are OUTBOARD of your bottom. It's when you let the shoulders drop inboard of the hips that you place an unholy strain on your lower back as well as looking like the classic beginner in lavatorial stress.

STAND UP! Crouching down is the posture of a threatening beast. Even as the wind gets up try to stand up normally. It's more comfortable and you are in far better shape to handle the rig.

FRONT FOOT FORWARD
. Moving into heavier conditions, the improver's niggliest recurring fault is that of turning involuntarily into the wind. More often than not it's the result of standing too square to the rig, which in turn leads to over-sheeting (pulling the sail too far). If you just twist the front foot forward a few degrees so it faces diagonally towards the nose of the board, you'll automatically take up a more open stance.

EXTENDED ARMS. It's the oldest tip in the book but bent arms are responsible for so much grief that they're not even worth considering. Don't lock out at the elbows, just keep them extended. The advantages are endless. For example, you gain a much better view of the road ahead and you divert the rig's load away from the weak forearms and onto the stronger shoulders and back. Above all it allows you to obey that greatest of all windsurfing's adages - GIVE YOURSELF ROOM

SHOULDER CONTROL. Bent arms lead you to control the sail's trimming angle by extending and contracting the biceps - a bad habit. With extended arms, power control should come from the shoulders. Workout tips that will help you with your New Year’s resolution

Lifestyle

Pilates, Yoga and Ballet all rolled into one

Pilates, Yoga and Ballet all
rolled into one

If you are like me and many other people out there, it seems like the New Year is always a good time to start eating healthier, exercise more and take care of your body. Unfortunately, the good intentions seem to fall by the wayside about half the year through. I know that once I start seeing results, then that motivates me to want to exercise more and really take care of my body. After feeling sorry for myself, I made a decision to make quite a few changes in my life. Treating my body better was one of them.

To me, a gym can get boring and the workouts are just so….blegh! One day, I was driving down through Liberty Station in Point Loma and saw a sign for Bar Method. I went home, looked up the website and was really intrigued by their ‘method’ of exercise. It is basically Pilates, Yoga and Ballet all rolled into one. When I took a class for the first time, I could not believe how difficult, intense yet satisfying it was. Best of all, the class was not boring. I had the pleasure of meeting Allison McCurdy, owner of Bar Method in Liberty Station, and she has been a great part in helping me with my comeback figure. Yes, I call it a comeback figure because once you have seen what your body can look like on it’s best day, you want that back.

Since I have had the pleasure of knowing Allison, I realized how knowledgeable she was about exercise and her sensitivity towards people with injuries, etc. She really knows her stuff! So, I wanted to pick Allison’s brain to see if she could answer 9 questions about fitness to help those that want to lose weight or tone their bods in 2009!

1-. What is the best way to jumpstart your metabolism?
2- Why is it important to incorporate core exercises with cardio?
3- At bar method, a majority of the workout consists of small, isolated, strengthening movements. What is the benefit of that style of exercise as opposed to the typical gym circuit training?
4- What is one exercise that you can do daily that will help burn those calories?
5- It is easy to get dehydrated and not know it. Does being hydrated affect your workout and how well your muscles respond to the exercise?
