Newcastle Airport signs deal with tour operator |
| Travel News |
 |
|
MORE than 70,000 more sunseekers will fly out of the region next year after a multi-million-pound contract was signed with a major tour operator.
Around 100 jobs will be created as part of Thomas Cooks plans to house extra aircraft at Newcastle International Airport.
It means package holidays to 12 destinations many of which were lost following the demise of XL Airways in the summer will now be on offer.
They include the addition of three brand new routes to the Greek Islands of Kefalonia and mainland resorts of Santorini and Skiathos, where hit movie Mamma Mia was set.
Holidaymakers will now also be able to enjoy 10 or 11-day breaks instead of being restricted to one or two-week trips, as is currently the case.
Airport chief executive Dave Laws said: Thomas Cook adding a third aircraft to its Newcastle base is excellent news for our airport and the North East.
It ensures that the people of the region can book with confidence, as Thomas Cook is known by all as a well trusted travel company.
This is a significant announcement and shows that despite the current economic climate, a company like Thomas Cook has confidence in the region and the airport. Newcastle is viewed as a solid area within the travel industry as the North East people who work extremely hard will always have their summer holidays.
After what happened with XL, the airport had to take a responsible approach to filling that lost capacity. To get someone as reputable as Thomas Cook is fantastic news.
The Boeing 757-200 aircraft that will come to Newcastle in May is being relocated from Canada.
Newcastle International fought off competition from several other regional airports to secure its services. New flights will run seven days a week and other destinations served include Dalaman and Bodrum, Turkey, Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, Reus, Spain, Zante, Crete, Tenerife, Paphos and Lanarca.
Pete Constanti of Thomas Cook said: We already have an extensive flying programme from Newcastle Airport which takes holiday-makers to more than 30 destinations. Im delighted we have been able to introduce an additional aircraft to serve the region and to offer even more holiday choice.

Britain to return Egypt sculpture |
| Culture News |
 |
|
An ancient sculpture of a pharaoh smuggled out of Egypt disguised as a tacky souvenir is to be returned home after almost 20 years.
Antiques restorer Jonathan Tokeley-Parry dipped the stone head of Amenhotep III in plastic and painted it black to make it resemble a cheap copy.
Now, 10 years after the Briton was jailed for his activities, the head is to be returned to Egypt in a ceremony.
After a long legal battle, it will be handed to Egypt's ambassador in London.
False provenance
The sculpture, depicting the pharaoh who died in 1375BC, was smuggled out the country in 1990, breaching Egyptian laws banning the export of antiques more than 100 years old.
The head was then passed from country to country, and at one stage it was given a false provenance dating it to the 1920s.
Tokeley-Parry, a well-known figure in the art world, was caught in 1994 when an assistant tried to sell papyrus texts to the British Museum.
The museum recognised them as stolen and called the police.

The 10 best holidays to make your pound travel further |
| Travel News |
 |
|
Cost-conscious consumers could do well to snub the traditional destinations of Spain, France and the US next year.
The power of the euro means that while last summer a 20 meal would have cost you £14, it now works out at £18. If you are still determined to get away from home, however, destinations outwith the eurozone can still offer good value for money once you get there.
1.) Turkey
2.) Dominican Republic
3.) Cuba
4.) Kenya
5.) Egypt : The coastal resort of Sharm el Sheikh sits at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. The ancient fishing village became popular with divers in the 1980s but also attracts those seeking some winter sun. Much of the best scenery, however, is underwater: there are brightly-coloured coral reefs and exotic marine life is abundant, much of which is unique to the area.
6.) Mexico
7.) South Africa
8.) Croatia
9.) Bulgaria
10.) Iceland

Dead Sea to receive water from Red Sea to save it from drying up |
| Environmental News |
 |
|
The Dead Sea could be saved from drying up under a groundbreaking plan to flood millions of gallons of seawater in from the Red Sea more than 110 miles away.
Funding has been secured for a feasibility study into the ambitious and controversial scheme to reverse falling water levels.
The scheme involves a 110-mile long canal, dubbed 'Red To Dead', that would channel roughly five million tonnes of seawater each day into the Dead Sea.
While schemes on a similar scale have been tried before for fresh water, this is by far the most ambitious seawater canalisation programme ever envisaged.
The new water is needed to avoid the complete disappearance of the Dead Sea, an event the World Bank warns would represent "an environmental calamity".
Overuse by farmers of water from the Jordan River, the only major influx into the Dead Sea, and climate change mean the level of the Dead Sea plunges by about three feet every year.
Its surface area has shrunk by a third to just 240 square miles in the last forty years and vast areas of foreshore have been exposed, pockmarked with dangerous sink holes.
Walking along the shoreline has become a hazardous business with visitors warned away by big red signs in case they fall into any of the thousand or so hollows in the ground.
Designers believe the steady daily flow of water offers a bonanza in hydroelectric power as the Dead Sea lies roughly 1,300 ft below the Red Sea.

Two 4,300-year-old tombs found in Egypt |
| Culture News |
 |
|
An Egyptian archaeological mission has found two tombs dating back to some 4,300 years ago in the southern suburb of Cairo, an official said at the site on Monday.
"We announce a major important discovery at Saqqara, the discovery of two new tombs dating back to 4,300 years ago," Zahi Hawass, secretary general of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) told reporters as he toured the site.
The two tombs found in an old cemetery in Saqqara, some 30 km south of Cairo, were from the reign of Pharaoh Unas of the fifth dynasty in ancient Egypt, the SCA has said in a press release.
The rock-cut tombs were found buried in the sands at the El-Deir bridge area in the Saqqara necropolis, some 400 meters away from the step-pyramid, said the press release.
One of the tombs belonged to Iya-Maat, the supervisor of king Unas's missions to bring granite from Aswan and other materials from the Western Desert.
Iya-Maat bore several titles including the "supervisor of the king's property."
The second tomb was built for Thinh, who was a woman singer in the fifth dynasty and also had different titles such as "supervisor of all singers."
Hawass said the discovery was just the beginning of a large cemetery and the excavation would continue to find more ancient tombs in the area.

| Take these flu prevention tips for kids and parents |
Parents & Kids |
 |
|
|
Stay home from work or school.
|
The Henry and Stark County Health Departments realize that with the onset of the flu season; many parents may have concerns about infection control and properly judging the severity of their children's flu symptoms. Therefore, the nursing staff of the Health Department offers the following tips on infection control as a means to prevent illness:
Wash hands or use alcohol hand solutions after being in public or around anyone with a cold or the flu.
* When coughing or sneezing, turn and cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue; dispose promptly. If no tissue is available, cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow.
* Don't take young children or those with immune system problems into large crowds unnecessarily when the flu is in your community.
* Avoid close contact (holding, kissing) between infants and anyone who has a cold or the flu.
* Stay home from work or school if you have the flu (fever, muscle aches, cough).
* Do not share things that go into the mouth - drinking cups, straws, etc.
* Frequently clean commonly touched surfaces (door knobs, refrigerator handle, phone, water faucets) if someone in your house has a cold or the flu.
* Do not smoke around children.
In addition, parents should take their child to the pediatrician or to the emergency department if he or she displays any of the following symptoms:
* Rapid or labored breathing, bluish skin color.
* Not drinking enough to maintain hydration.
* Not waking up; not interacting.
* So irritable that he or she doesn't want to be held.
* Flu symptoms improve but then the child becomes ill again with fever, and even worse cough.

Make Your Next Party a Smashing Success |
Lifestyle |
 |
|
|
Take time to speak with every single guest
and listen to what he or
she has to say.
|
Even if you've planned your party to the last detail, you might be missing the key ingredient that distinguishes a so-so party from a smashing success. The secret? "Don't be as concerned about being the quintessential hostess as you are about showing each guest you care from the moment they arrive until the last goodbye," advises Diane Warner, author of Big Book of Parties and several party planning books.
"People can forgive a dish they don't like, but if there isn't warmth from the host, that's a little less forgivable," says Susan RoAne, author of How to Work a Room. Not sure if you can put a room full of guests at ease? Try these tips:
1. Be prepared. Decide on a menu that can be prepared in advance -- no-fail foods that you won't have to worry about. "If you have to be in the kitchen the whole time, then you're really not being the host," says Roane. "If you're not there, you're leaving your guest to fend for themselves." Warner's rule of thumb: The bigger the event, the more help you need. "Don't be afraid to hire somebody," she says. You want to be sure you're not working so hard during the party that you don't enjoy it or get to talk to your guests.
2. Adjust your attitude. No matter how worried you are about mishaps in the kitchen or the table decorations, make sure you greet all your guests as they arrive. The best hosts make you feel special, as if they've waited all week for you to come to their party, says RoAne.
"You should take time to speak with every single guest and listen to what he or she has to say," says Warner. "Give your guest all the time that she needs to tell you about her new little grandbaby, even if you've heard the story before and even if you really need to go start a pot of coffee."
3. Keep conversation flowing.
4. Don't strive for perfection.
5. Think about safety.
