Egyptian Team Works to Uncover Statue of Pharaoh |
| Culture News |
 |
|
An archeological team, under the direction of Egypt's well-known Antiquities chief Zahi Hawass, has begun uncovering rubble under which the largest known statue of Pharaoh Ramses II is buried in the southern Egyptian town of Sohag.
The statue, which workers discovered more than 15 years ago, 476 kilometers miles south of Cairo, is finally being uncovered, according to Antiquities Chief Zahi Hawass.
The Egyptian team had been hampered in its excavation work, until now, by the presence of a Muslim cemetery in the region of Akhmim across the Nile River from Sohag. Archeologists were finally able to begin their work when bodies from the modern-era cemetery were moved elsewhere.
Hawass said the statue was the "largest of Ramses II" ever found in Egypt, and his team said the statue was part of a temple complex dedicated to Ramses II.
The reign of Ramses II was marked by major building projects and archeologists say that he is reputed to have built more buildings and statues in Egypt than any other pharaoh.
Ramses II ruled for approximately 67 years. In addition to being known as a builder, Ramses II is also believed to have carved his name over the names of other Pharaohs to rededicate their statues to himself.
French Egyptologist Bruno Argemi of the Egyptian Archeological Society of Provence, France, says that Ramses II is one of the most important Pharaohs of Egypt's New Kingdom's 19th dynasty, which is the next to last dynasty of the era. The Amenophis pharaohs begin the New Empire, he says, at the point when the 18th dynasty ends, and it includes the Thutmose pharaohs and Hatchepsout. The 19th dynasty is known for Ramses I, Seti I and Ramses II… So, he concludes that Ramses II is really one of the greatest kings that Egypt has ever known, along with Tuthmose III, Amenophis III and Hatchepsout…

Mummification: a spa art in Egypt |
| Tourism News |
 |
|
Might the new spa at the Hilton Luxor be going a little overboard? The Nayara holistic cocooning treatment (70 minutes; £114) is, a source advises, “inspired by the art of mummification, which was developed with the aim of immortalising the soul”. It turns out the treatment merely comprises exfoliation, a wrap, skin-nourishing, a facial and head massage. And we were so looking forward to brains extracted through the nose.

1st international conference on online tourism opens in Egyptian town of Sharm al-Sheikh |
| Travel News |
 |
|
The first international conference on online tourism opened in the Egyptian town of Sharm al-Sheikh on Monday.
The four-day conference, which is held by the International Online Tourism Association in conjunction with the International Organisation on Technologies and the Internet, has drawn the best specialists in the field of information technologies, marketing, online trade and tourism from various countries of the world.
The opening ceremony that was held at one of the best hotels on the Red Sea coast was attended by Amr Moussa, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, and Zuheir Garana, Egyptian Minister of Tourism.
Online tourism is a relatively new phenomenon in the contemporary world, the emergence of which has been promoted by a rapid development of information techologies. In point of fact, this is electronic commerce in travel business without tour operators.
In recent years online tourist business has been on the rise in the light of the fact that potential travellers increasingly often turn out to be able to find bearings in the sea of travel suggestions without go-betweens, and book hotel accommodation on their own, buy tickets via the Internet, and arrange a tourist trip to any point on the globe without leaving home.
Participants in the conference intend to discuss numerous matters that this young branch of business is faced with. The main subjects of discussion include the establishment of a balance between traditional and alternative types of tourist business, an increase in the sale of tickets via the Internet, including the booking of air tickets and hotel rooms. Expert opinion is that solutions to these problems will promote a larger-scale tourism arrangements via the Internet, which quite often is much cheaper to those who travel with a view to gaining fresh impressions.

Adelaide United downs
Ahly 1-0 |
| Sports News |
 |
|
Forward Cristiano scored a superb goal in the first half to give Australia's Adelaide United a 1-0 win over Egypt's Ahly on Thursday and a fifth-place finish at the Club World Cup.
Cristiano, one of three Brazilians in the starting lineup, put Adelaide up 1-0 with a fine individual effort just seven minutes in.
After stripping an Ahly defender of the ball, Cristiano rifled a right-footed blast from the top of the area past a diving Ahly goalkeeper Amir Abdel-Hamid.
"It was very important for me to score," said Cristiano. "I played two games here and had several chances so it was nice to finally get a goal and help the team."
Mohamed Barakat had the best scoring chance for the African champions in the 83rd minute when he fired from 25-yards out only to have Adelaide goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic make a brilliant diving save.
Adelaide lost 1-0 to Japan's Gamba Osaka in the quarterfinals while Ahly lost 4-2 to Mexico's Pachuca.
It was a disappointing result for the six-time African champions, who came to the tournament with high expectations but finished in sixth place.

| Wooden Spoon Angel |
Parents & Kids |
 |
|
|
Top of the Christmas tree
|
This pretty wooden spoon angel is an easy Christmas craft for kids. She makes a great puppet and looks pretty on the top of the Christmas tree, too.
You will need:
- Wooden spoon
- Pink paint
- White and pink felt
- Yellow wool
- Wiggle eyes
- Gold card
- Gold pipe cleaner (chenille stem)
- Pink pen
- Glue
- Sticky tape
Instructions:
1- Paint the spoon pink and leave to dry.
2- Make the dress by cutting a quarter circle of white felt. Roll into a cone around the spoon. Glue around the neck and up the back of the cone to secure.
3- Cut two arms from white foam and two hands from pink. Glue one hand to the end of each arm and the other ends of the arms to the body.
4- Glue on some wool as hair.
5- Make a halo by twisting a pipe cleaner into shape and taping it to the back of the head.
6- Cut wings from gold card and glue them to the angel’s back. Finally, add two eyes and draw on a face.

You can avoid back pain |
Lifestyle |
 |
|
|
Understand the roots of back pain
|
It’s one of the most common and debilitating conditions of modern lifestyle. Back pain does not necessarily afflict only those who spend long hours in front of the computer. It can happen to all those who are not careful about their sitting posture.
The fact is, our bodies are not designed to bear the stress of being in an upright position for long hours. In addition, most of us are ignorant about the word ergonomics—the study of the relationship between people as workers and their work environment (“ergo” means “work” in Greek).
But being aware is no solution to this problem either. We need to apply it to our daily lives in a correct manner. Companies waste a lot of money trying to address the problem by getting “specially designed” workstations. We need to understand that the roots of back pain lie elsewhere and fancy apparatus is no solution unless we make some lifestyle changes. Let’s examine this problem more closely.
What do ergonomically designed workstations mean?
Way too much emphasis is given to “ergonomically designed” workstations without understanding how to use them. In my opinion, a tool is only as good as its user. If your sitting posture itself is wrong, there is no point in having an ergonomically designed chair and the rest of the fancy workstation. To understand this better, see how an 18-24-month-old child is able to sit completely straight without using any hi-tech tools. The trouble is, we lose our ability to sit straight as we grow older. We need to re-educate ourselves on the importance of using our bodies better and to help us make use of available tools to their optimum level.
What is the correct sitting posture?
Let’s take a look at a few tips from the Alexander technique (it is a method that works to change movement habits in our everyday activities, and is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a re-education of the mind and body). While these techniques go a long way in helping us understand our bodies better, they should not be done without expert supervision.
- Sit like a puppet
- Always sit on the edge of the chair, rather than sitting all the way back.
- Place your feet firmly on the floor, and keep them shoulder width apart.
- In effect, your bottom and your two feet should form an equilateral triangle.
- Now loosen up a bit, relax your shoulders and lean forwards at an angle of around 15 degrees.
- Imagine having a string attached to the top of your head that’s pulling you up, not vertically but at an angle of around 15 degrees.
- Your centre of gravity should be at the centre of the equilateral triangle formed by your feet and bottom. This is to ensure that the load is not on your spine at all.
Work like a puppet
I strongly recommend that you master the above-mentioned posture before you try to do this. If your foundation is not solid, there’s no point building on it. But once you think you are comfortable with this posture, graduate to the next level.
- Relax your shoulders. Imagine that the strings attached to your shoulders are pulling you up.
- Cut those strings and let your shoulders drop. Relax your shoulders and elbows. Most of us have very strained shoulders.
If you notice, most puppets have strings attached halfway through both their arms which are controlled by the puppeteer. Think of those strings. All your actions, such as using mouse or keyboard, should happen as if the puppeteer is in control.
