And Then There Were Three |
| Travel News |
 |
|
Before renovations to Terminal 1 were completed in 2003, travelers passing through Cairo International Airport were often plagued by crowded gates and long lines at check-in counters. Five years after the upgrades, which upped the airport’s capacity to 11 million, crowding is still a problem due to steady increases in the number of travelers over the last seven years.
During busy periods, travel-weary tourists find themselves frustrated by the full waiting lounges, chaotic arrival and departure halls, and narrow corridors. And they aren’t afraid to say so.
Alice Bocco, visiting from Italy for the second time, says her arrival experience definitely tried her patience. “There were so many people and the corridor before exiting is narrow, so it took us forever to get out. That’s not a good [reflection] on an international airport.”
The troubles aren’t so much a result of poor planning or management, say airport authorities, but the lack of funding for new facilities. The funding shortage was solved when the World Bank agreed to give the Cairo Airport Company a loan to complete the project.
Mohamed Rahma, Egyptair’s communications manager, is certain Cairo International’s new Terminal 3, officially set to open next month, will solve crowding issues despite the fact the project’s completion was delayed three months. Egypt’s tourism industry is hoping the move could also help the nation achieve its tourism target of 14 million visitors per year by 2009 instead of 2011, as forecasted by the Ministry of Tourism.
The new terminal could also help the country deal with the repercussions of the global financial crisis, which may slow tourism here as Europeans and North Americans tighten their belts. Airport authorities hope that offering travelers quicker transfer times, more flights in and out of the region and greater luxury through new facilities will give them another reason to visit or change flights in Cairo.

Egypt puts a stop to tourist convoys |
| Tourism News |
 |
|
End of security convoys will result in more freedom to explore Egypt independently and see obscure sights.
For the past 10 years, if you wanted to see the treasures along the Nile and you didn’t want to go by boat, you had to travel in an armed convoy. Not any more.
In the wake of the 1997 attack at the Temple of Hatshepsut in Luxor, the Egyptian government obliged all foreigners travelling overland between the country’s main tourist centres to join armed convoys. This visible security was intended to dissuade attacks and reassure visitors, but it has long outlived its usefulness.
Ironically, in the absence of any attacks, the convoys have become the biggest danger: in high season, as many as 100 coaches and minivans have raced across the desert from the Red Sea resorts every day.
The effect of this rally on the antiquities, particularly in Luxor, has been disastrous. In spite of new parking facilities, neither the Valley of the Kings nor Karnak Temple is able to cope with the simultaneous arrival of thousands of visitors: when I visited the Valley of the Kings just ahead of the convoy a couple of weeks ago, there was only one guard on the gate to check tickets.
Things should be very different now. Even if you are only visiting Luxor, the end of the convoys should mean a (slightly) calmer visit to the main sights. Coaches will still arrive from the Red Sea, though, one hopes, not all at the same time.

Egypt's real estate market catches global attention |
| Property News |
 |
|
Sam Zell, the property moghul who made billions in 2007 when he sold his Equity Office Properties (EOP) portfolio to Blackstone for $38 billion, recently shortlisted the top three property investment destinations - Brazil, China and (surprise!) Egypt.
After years of state-built housing, in the early 1990s, the Egyptian government allowed private housing projects. Soon, there was oversupply, developers went bankrupt, and from 1997 on there was a property crisis. Now the market is booming again.
House prices are rising strongly in Egypt. There are three key areas in Egypt - Cairo, Hurghada and Sharm Al Shaikh. Most appreciation has been in the new developments, such as New Cairo and in the new Red Sea projects.
Why Egypt?
For one, it is a tourism superstar. Traffic doubled between 2001 and 2006 and Egypt forecasts 13 million visitors in 2008, 19 per cent more than in 2007. Tourism and investment has been boosted by the free float of the Egyptian Pound in 2003, which suddenly made Egypt and Egyptian property much more affordable and popular. A benefit of tourism is that property investment for short-term rentals is a very viable proposition.
The incredibly low prices are another plus at an average of Dh220 per square foot. For prime residential property in a major city, comparable Middle East prices are Dh2,438 per square foot in the UAE, Dh760 in Lebanon, Dh536 in Morocco and Dh393 in Jordan. A new three-bedroom villa in New Cairo can cost Dh600,000. One-bedroom beachfront apartments in the resorts of Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh go for average Dh150,000 and Dh260,000 respectively.
In 2001, the mortgage law was passed and this has ignited the mortgage market as banks can now repossess properties and evict defaulting owners. This has been positive for the property market.

Egypt stun England to take women's squash team title |
| Sports News |
 |
|
PARIS (AFP) — Egypt beat defending champions England 2-1 to win the women's world team championship title for the first time here on Saturday.
Egyptian number one Omneya Abdel Kawy, ranked seven in the world, saw off Jenny Duncalf, crushing the world number six, 11-1, 11-6, 11-9.
Third string Raneem El Weleily then lost to England's world number eight Laura Lengthorn-Massaro, 11-8, 5-11, 15-13, 6-11, 11-4.
The decider saw England's Alison Waters twice taking the lead against Engy Kheirallah, who lost her world top 20 ranking this month.
Kheirallah three times came from behind in the decider before facing a match-ball against her at 9-10.
But the 27-year-old won the point on a stroke, before moving on to her own match-ball at 11-10 which she won when a ball off the back wall from Waters failed to reach the front wall and Kheirallah celebrated a 4-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-0, 12-10 win.
Fourth seeds Malaysia claimed the bronze medal following a 2-1 win over third seeds New Zealand which was kickstarted by world number one Nicol David beating Shelley Kitchen 13-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-3.

| Little Christmas Tree Decoration |
Parents & Kids |
 |
|
|
 |
Decorate your Christmas table
|
This craft is very simple to do and you can really go to town with decorating it! Prop the little Christmas tree decoration up on your mantelpiece, use it to make a Christmas card, or hang it from your real Christmas tree. You could even plant it in a tiny pot and use it to decorate your Christmas table.
You will need:
- Lollipop sticks (popsicle sticks), green (or plain, painted green)
- Green pipe cleaners (chenille stems)
- Beads (optional)
- Glitter glue (optional)
- PVA (white) glue - for making a card or hanging decoration
- Ribbon - for hanging the decoration
Instructions:
1- For a simple Christmas tree:
Place the pipe cleaner on top of the lollipop stick, at right angles to it, and about 1 inch down from the top with about 1 inch protruding to one side. Holding it in place with your thumb, wrap the pipe cleaner tightly round the lollipop stick and then trim.
Do the same 2 or 3 more times down the lollipop stick, each time making the "branches" slightly longer.
2- Make a Christmas card:
Run a thick line of PVA glue along the lollipop stick and place the tree onto a folded card. Weight it down while the glue sets. We added a gel star sticker above our tree.
3- Beading your tree:
Even the youngest kids will find it easy to push little beads onto the branches of the tree. We used pearly beads on our glittery pipe cleaner tree, and bright plastic beads on our plain pipe cleaner tree.
4- Make a hanging Christmas tree decoration
To make a hanging decoration, you will need two lollipop sticks. Make a loop of ribbon and sandwich it between two lollipop sticks, gluing it in place. Younger children should wait for it to dry and the continue as before. Older kids should be able to continue straight away if they hold the sticks firmly in place while they wind the first loop of pipe cleaner around the lollipop sticks!

How To Stop Over Eating |
Lifestyle |
 |
|
|
 |
Stop when you’re satisfied
|
What’s very important to implement into your lifestyle is to eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re satisfied.
So how can you relearn how to eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full? Follow the 5 tips below and you’ll be enjoying your food a lot more with the added bonus of losing a few pounds in the process.
Slow Down
Honestly, this isn’t rocket science over here. Anybody can start eating a bit more slowly…even you. If you’ve been reading my newsletters for the past year you might remember some other eating tips I recommended such as “sip water between bites” or “chew your food before swallowing”.
These tips are all aimed to slowing you down when you eat. What’s interesting is that it takes 12 or more minutes for food satisfaction signals to reach the brain of a thin person, but 20 or more minutes for an obese person. By eating slowly, this ensures that these important messages have time to reach your brain so you feel satisfied and not stuffed like a turkey.
Awareness
Take your eating to a whole new level. Instead of just eating while you work or drive sit down and enjoy your meal with no distractions. If you do eat while you work, or drive this distracts you and most importantly your body will tend not to register the food (calories) and you’ll begin to over eat.
Try and find a quiet place with no distractions to enjoy your food. I enjoy eating my meals outside, it’s peaceful and there isn’t anything to distract me from my meal.
It’s all about the first bites
Believe it or not, food enjoyment comes from the first few bites. After the first few bites your taste buds start to lose their sensitivity to the chemicals in your meal that make it taste good. Nourishing your taste buds by really savouring those first few bites can help you stop eating.
