Stolen antiquities returned from US to Egypt |
| News |
 |
|
Dozens of ancient artifacts stolen by a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot were returned to the Egyptian government on Wednesday during a ceremony in Manhattan.
Officials said the items, including several small urns on display at the ceremony, came from the Ma'adi archaeological site outside Cairo and date to 3,600 B.C. or earlier.
"When (the military officer) stole these items from Egypt, he robbed a nation of part of its history," said Peter J. Smith, head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's New York office. "The repatriation of the Ma'adi artifacts reunites the people of Egypt with an important piece of their cultural heritage."
Also on hand were Egyptian Ambassador Hussein Mubarak and Attiya Radwan, head of the Central Department for Upper Egypt Monuments.
Edward George Johnson, a chief warrant officer from Fayetteville, North Carolina, was arrested in February in Alabama on charges of transportation of stolen property and wire fraud.
Johnson was deployed in Cairo in September 2002 when approximately 370 pre-dynastic artifacts were stolen from the Ma'adi Museum. In January 2003, he contacted an art dealer about buying some of the items.
The art dealer bought about 80 pieces for $20,000 after Johnson said his grandfather acquired the antiquities when he worked in Egypt in the 1930s and '40s, authorities said. Some of the items were later consigned to galleries in Manhattan, London, Zurich and Montreal, among other places.
The government said experts had determined the majority of the items he sold had been stolen from the museum. The pieces were originally excavated from the archaeological site in the 1920s and '30s.
Johnson pleaded guilty in July to possessing and selling stolen antiquities and was sentenced to 18 months probation.

Egypt ends convoy system |
| Tourism News |
 |
|
Tourists visiting Egypt can now move around far more freely thanks to the end of the convoy system.
The system has been running for the last 11 years and required coaches travelling between cities and resorts to join up with police escorted convoys which restricted when tourists could travel due to terrorism concerns.
However, as of today the system has been ended during daylight hours although it will still be required between 6pm and 6am.
Discover Egypt commercial director Philip Breckner said: “For Discover Egypt clients travelling to and from Luxor to the Red Sea, it will also allow for more convenient travel times.
"It will also allow for travel between Luxor and Marsa Alam and Port Ghalib, which until now has not been practical.
“This is a great bonus for those choosing to travel and holiday in Egypt and agents, need to be aware of this when selling packages for December and 2009”.

Egypt touted as the next outsourcing destination |
| News |
 |
|
The country hopes to have a second complex operational by next year, according to Amin Khaireldin, an advisor to the board of directors at the Egyptian IT Industry Development Agency.
Khaireldin argued that Egypt's advanced telecoms infrastructure, convenient geographical location for western Europe, and large IT talent pool have drawn big names like Wipro, Satyam, Vodafone and Oracle to set up offices in the country.
"Vice presidents of large corporations are talking to us and we are very busy with diligence," he said. "Egypt is becoming identified more and more as a good outsourcing destination because we have the talent pool with multilingual skills, which is open to other cultures and which views the job as aspirational. "
Peter Ryan, lead analyst with Datamonitor, agreed that Egypt offers an excellent infrastructural and geographical location for companies looking to outsource or offshore. He also highlighted the "superb" language skills and large IT graduate population as reasons why Egypt could thrive over the coming 12 months and beyond.
Egypt may get the best results by positioning itself as a nearshore alternative to places like India and South Africa for firms based in western Europe, although Ryan warned that it may struggle against stereotypes.
"The opportunities are significant, but one of the biggest challenges will be the perception of the country as [dangerous for foreigners]," he said.
"There are huge opportunities for outsourcing companies next year to recoup their investments because firms want to cut overheads [by outsourcing], but there will be challenges too."
Key among these challenges will be the financial instability of some sectors, and the potential for firms to decide that the reduced volume of business they are doing may not warrant outsourcing some functions at all, he said.

6 Tips on How to Not Let Your Relatives Ring Your Holiday Bell |
Lifestyle |
 |
|
|
 |
Visualize the rest of your
day going smoothly
|
Are you one of those people who dread the holidays? Last minute shopping, decorating disasters, difficult people to buy for, demanding kids-and most of all the run-ins with relatives!
If you're anticipating a rerun of previous years where your relatives made you crazy and your holidays were filled with headaches, then you are sure to experience that again this year. Because the energy you put into dreading and anticipating will pave the way for more of the same. The energy-also known as the vibration-that you project in the world will manifest the reality you imagined.
However, you can begin to change all that just with your thoughts. You can use "personal frequency management" and visualization to manifest a truly happy holiday and keep the joy in the holiday season. By Consciously Creating your day--juggling work, shopping, cooking, tree trimming, kids, the management of those pesky relatives etc--you can have the kind of holiday season you desire effortlessly and without hiccup.
Here are six tips for creating "Relative Harmony" for the Holidays:
1- Throw Out the Love Net
Well before they show up at your door, when you begin planning your holiday, send your "love net"-your high vibration loving energy--out to your relatives-and keep doing it throughout the holiday season. Feel love toward them even in the most trying times. Know that love is patience and understanding. Plenty of loving energy can head off, diffuse and transmute negative energy emanating from your relations. Ask for an unending supply of loving energy to pass into you from the Universe and through you to your family members.
2- Visualize
Take some quiet time each day and visualize just how wonderful your time with your relatives will be. In your mind, see them helping you instead of criticizing, offering support, staying out of the way, picking up after themselves, volunteering instead of demanding, loving the gifts you have picked for them, finding ways to make your time together joyful and loving. Relish the emotions of these wonderful reunions. Thank the Universe in advance for granting this incredible camaraderie, goodwill, grace and warmth. Then go ahead and visualize the rest of your day going smoothly, too!
3- Stay in Your High Frequency Range
Whatever happens, do not allow your relations to pull you into the low frequency range of anger, frustration, bitterness or regret. Stay in your high frequency states of love, contentment, joy, compassion and generosity -play music and tune out negativity, focus on those who appreciate what you are offering, do something creative that serves your soul. If you are being bombarded by negative energy-excuse yourself and go do something yummy just for you-take in a movie, go for a walk, play with your puppy, give yourself a bubble bath, shoot some hoops.
