Modern Egypt

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) reported a steady growth of tourism in Egypt in 2007 and recently stated that the expected growth for the travel and tourism economy for the country in 2008 is expected to be 5.5 percent.

Experience International, a specialist in emerging property markets such as Egypt, has seen an increasing number of Fly to Let investors taking advantage of the strong economy, stable political system and stable currency.

Steve Worboys, Director of Experience International says: “Egypt is a modern state and as a country we have seen it grow as a tourist destination over many years due to its rich history and unique attractions such as the pyramids; now though people are increasingly seeing its potential as a place of investment for both remuneration purposes and the fact that it is a year round holiday destination.”

Welcome to DEMA Show 2008

Welcome to DEMA Show 2008

Despite having attended hundreds of tradeshows over the years, I really did not know what to expect from DEMA 2008, held October 22-25 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas. This was the 32nd gathering of the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association, and a massive one at that, with over 600 exhibitors filling the South Hall of the giant Las Vegas Convention Center. For me, it was my first. DEMA, of course, seeks to support and promote diving-related businesses, and their promotional efforts include the "Be A Diver" campaign, all sorts of marketing help, and, as each year's climax, the annual DEMA show. Despite uncertain economic times, DEMA was a smashing success.

Give attention to the bird flu

International conference in Egypt says world must still be prepared to tackle bird influenza pandemic.

Some success has been achieved in reducing avian influenza outbreaks in poultry and humans, but the world must still be prepared to tackle an influenza pandemic, experts at an international conference in Egypt have said.

“Things are a lot better now than they were when we started this work in 2005 but they are not good enough. We are still not sufficiently prepared to properly bring a pandemic under control quickly,” David Nabarro, senior UN system coordinator for avian and human influenza, told IRIN.

Nabarro said it was especially difficult to get government departments other than Health Ministries to work on a pandemic, and greater international cooperation was needed.

“We have seen very good progress in Egypt, Indonesia, Vietnam, and excellent progress in France, UK and Singapore… We want all countries to be ready but probably we need more time and we need to put some pressure on countries to give this priority attention,” he said.

The experts were attending the sixth International Ministerial Conference on Avian and Pandemic Influenza in Sharm El Sheikh.

Africa and Europe meet between the paws of the Sphinx.

It is in Egyptian art that proportion, geometry and the idea of beauty first appear. The grace and sensuality, not just of Greek art but of all the cultures of the Mediterranean, grew out of Egypt.

The most famous sculpture in Africa seems to be slowly melting back into the desert out of which it was carved. The Great Sphinx is hewn out of the natural bedrock beneath the sands of Giza in Egypt, where it sits in leonine grandeur by the causeway leading to the pyramid of Khafre, the middle-sized of the site's three pyramids. It was created in about 2500BC, early in ancient Egypt's long artistic triumph; more than two-and-a-half millennia later the Roman emperor Hadrian would build an Egyptian religious garden at his villa in Tivoli, drawing on a style of sculpture that was still very much alive in the early Christian era.

If many people's idea of art is dominated by the European model of a succession of styles and movements from Greek classicism to American minimalism and beyond, the art of ancient Egypt has — alone among non-European cultures — long been accepted into this grand narrative. When the sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini placed an Egyptian obelisk on the back of a marble elephant in Rome as a homage to the "wise Egyptian", or Napoleon exorted his army at the Battle of Pyramids, they did not see Egyptians as a lesser people but as the oldest sages and artists, the fount of Europe's culture.

Favourable tax rules make Egypt a popular choice

Hurghada - offers lowest cost property

Hurghada - offers lowest cost property

According to reports, Egypt’s agreeable tax rules should be exciting the savvy overseas property investor of today.

West Side Village in Hurghada have reported an 18% increase in enquiries and sales this year, compared to 2007, and say that with no capital gains or inheritance tax investors can maximise returns in this emerging area of Africa.

In addition, profit from the sale of property can be taken out of Egypt with no restrictions. Investors are only required to pay a minimal annual real estate tax of approximately £50 per year.

West Side Village claim that property prices in Egypt have risen by 50% over the last two years and are predicted to continue to grow by at least 27% annually until 2011, despite the economic downturn. On top of these capital gains, rental yields are higher than average, reaching 12% in certain areas.

Marketing director, Stephen Smith, comments: "Serious investors analysing their buying and selling costs are drawn to low-tax destinations, which will enable them to maximise their returns. Hurghada offers fantastic buying opportunities, with some of the lowest cost property in Egypt, virtually no tax to pay and strong rental demand driven by tourism.”

African champions the Pharaohs of Egypt will continue to wear Puma kits till 2014

“The new sponsorship deal will see Puma paying us 800,000 Euros every year. We will also receive 200,000 Euros in case we win any title,” said Egypt Football Association (EFA) President, Samir Zaher.

Zaher is credited with an aggressive marketing drive on behalf of Egyptian football since he was elected three years ago.

He has already earned the country’s domestic league money from the sale of television rights.

Egypt have been drawn with Rwanda, Algeria and Zambia in the final round of African qualification for the 2010 World Cup. The first placed team will go to South Africa.

Supersized P.E.: Ten Tips to Help Overweight Kids Get Healthy

Parents & Kids

Stay fit – Get Healthy

Stay fit – Get Healthy

Bags of Halloween candy are piled high in the grocery stores this week, providing a dangerous temptation for those battling obesity. For the parents of overweight children, getting their children to understand the dangers of overindulging after trick-or-treating can be even more difficult.

San Diego State University Exercise and Nutritional Sciences professor David Kahan, offers ten ways to help parents -- and teachers -- get overweight kids back on track, not just after Halloween, but for the rest of their life, in his new book "Supersized P.E." "Being physically active every day is especially crucial for children struggling with weight issues," said Kahan, a physical education teacher and researcher. "Overweight and obese youth carry social, psychological and emotional burdens that often lead to anger, despair and ultimately, a sedentary lifestyle. Our goal is to help youth love physical activity."

Supersized P.E. is designed to help parents, physical educators and leaders of physical activity programs to better understand the physical, emotional and psychological issues that reduce the overweight child's quality of life and help them learn how to be physically active for a lifetime. The book's recommendations include:

1- Set an Example: Be a good role model of overall wellness.

2- Emphasize a Child's Strengths: If it's something they enjoy or are good at, they are much more likely to do it.

3- Foster a Positive Atmosphere that feels safe and inviting, is free of sarcasm, insults and harassment and be a consistent source of comfort and encouragement.

Got the pregnancy blues?

Lifestyle

Depression were more likely to experience a preterm birth

Depression were more likely to
experience a preterm birth

The baby blues have been extensively studied and discussed by the public (thank you Brooke Shields), but depression during pregnancy is significantly under-recognized and under-diagnosed, according to Dr. De-Kun Li, a reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist at Kaiser Permanente's Division of Research in Oakland. This might change as a result of a new study conducted by Li and her colleagues at Kaiser.

The research published in the journal Human Reproduction found that women with symptoms of depression were more likely to experience a preterm birth. The greater the severity of depression symptoms, the greater the likelihood of early delivery. Why is this such a big deal? Preterm delivery is the leading cause of infant mortality and medical expenditures for newborns.

"This study adds to emerging evidence that depression during early pregnancy may interfere with the neuroendocrine pathways and subsequently placental function," Li says. "The placenta and neuroendocrine functions play an important role in maintaining the health of a pregnancy and determining the onset of labor."

About 10 percent to 20 percent of pregnant women will have some symptoms of depression, and a quarter to half of them will suffer from major depression, according to the American Pregnancy Association, a nonprofit group based in Irving, Texas. How should these women cope? An October 23, U.S. News & World Report story, reporting on the study, offers up some tip’s.
