Computerised system to automatically adjust a diver's buoyancy

Computerised system to automatically adjust a diver's buoyancy

An Electronic Dive Buddy built by University of Auckland engineering students could make scuba diving a much safer sport.

Anatoly Kudryashov and Jenny Xu from the Department of Mechanical Engineering's Mechatronics Engineering specialisation have designed a computerised system to automatically adjust a diver's buoyancy if they get into trouble. The project was supervised by Associate Professor Vojislav Kecman and assisted by Technical Officer Rob Earl.

"The most important task for a diver while underwater is buoyancy control. Normally this is controlled manually by adding or releasing air in a buoyancy control device, which is worn like a jacket," Anatoly says.

"To rise in the water, a diver adds air to the buoyancy control device. To sink, air is let out. If the buoyancy is not adjusted correctly, a diver may rise too rapidly or descend too quickly to an unsafe depth, risking serious injury or sometimes death," Jenny says.

The Electronic Dive Buddy attaches to the buoyancy jacket and monitors the diver's motion while underwater. It automatically adjusts buoyancy if an unsafe depth or velocity is reached. The device also has a 'cruise control' feature, allowing divers to automatically maintain a desired depth in the water.

The Oriental Coast Project

The Oriental Coast Project

A masterpiece designed by WATG, the world's most distinctive architectural firm.

Over 7.5 km of magnificent coastline and more than ten hotels (4 and 5 luxurious stars hotels) and 4,000 tourist residences between luxurious villas, apartments and studios.

Also with a marina of 600 berths, an holes signature golf course and the cultural downtown centre is the heart of the Oriental Coast with its shops, retail and restaurants.

The Oriental Coast provides a variety of entertainment activities. There are both indoor and outdoor arenas for a wide range of sporting activities from tennis and golf to team sports as football and basketball. Safaris and mountain excursions can be arranged to enjoy the wild life of the area at its natural best.

As for water sports, the Oriental Coast captures the variety of the Red Sea flora, which makes it a paradise for scuba divers.

All other marine related activities such as snorkeling, water skiing, and wind surfing can also be enjoyed. The area is also considered to be a resting ground for many kinds of migrating birds, giving a bird-watcher a perfect view to capture those moments.

Ancient Egypt had powerful Sudan rival, British Museum dig shows

Sun, sand, sea, monuments, ruins and culture

New evidence about the power of a Sudanese civilisation that once dominated ancient Egypt has come to light thanks to a British Museum expedition

The Second Kushite Kingdom controlled the whole Nile valley from Khartoum to the Mediterranean from 720BC to 660BC.

Now archaeologists have discovered that a region of northern Sudan once considered a forgotten backwater once actually "a real power-base".

They discovered a ruined pyramid containing fine gold jewellery dating from about 700BC on a remote un-navigable 100-mile stretch of the Nile known as the Fourth Cataract, plus pottery from as far away as Turkey.

Other finds included numerous examples of ancient rock art and 'musical' rocks that were tapped to create a melodic sound.

They only made the discoveries after being invited by the Sudanese authorities to help excavate part of the Merowe region, which is soon to be flooded by a large hydro-electric dam. More than 10,000 sites were found.

Historians had written off the area as being of little archaeological interest.

Dr Derek Welsby, of the British Museum, said: "We had no idea how rich the area was."

Remarkably well-preserved bodies, naturally mummified in the desert air, and a cow buried complete with eye ointment were also unearthed.

Dr Welsby said the finds revolutionised the history and geography of the Kushite kingdoms.

The First Kushite Kingdom rivalled Egypt for power between 2500BC and 1500BC, when many of Egypt's largest pyramids were built, he said.

"All our preconceptions about this being a relatively poor, inhospitable area were completely wrong," he remarked. We thought the first kingdom gradually grew over 1,000 years; now we know it happened right at the beginning, very rapidly.

Five tips to get your child eating fruits and vegetables

Parents & Kids

Our children’s eating habits and preferences mirror our own

Our children’s eating habits and
preferences mirror our own

Many parents understand the dilemma of having a picky eater in the family. You constantly worry if they are getting enough nutrients and how their diet will affect their development. Here are some great tips to get your child to eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

1 - Start early – Introduce healthy fruits and vegetables to your children as early as possible. The earlier they get used to a certain food; it becomes a part of their lifelong diet. The second I got the green light from my pediatrician to give my son the baby food purees, I immediately ran to the store and bought every type I could find. My pediatrician informed me to only introduce one new food every two to three days in case of an allergic reaction. You should always consult your pediatrician or health care provider about your child’s diet.

2 - Never give up – When my son was a baby, he would only eat the green purees. You can imagine how tired I got of removing pea and green bean stains from his laundry. I would offer him sweet fruits only to have them come right back at me. Your child may try a certain food nine or ten times before he decides he likes it. I remember my son would never eat bananas. I tried them pureed, mashed, and mixed in with oatmeal but he avoided them like the plague. Then one day, we were in the grocery store and he pointed at them so I figured I would try again. I got home and broke a banana in half and handed it to him. Before I knew it, the banana was gone. He had eaten it all up and he eats them all the time now. I don’t know what changed, maybe his tastes are different or maybe it is exciting now because he can hold it himself. If they refuse a food the first time, try again periodically.

3 - Be a good example – Many times, our children’s eating habits and preferences mirror our own. I don’t have time to sit down for a proper breakfast in the morning and usually grab something once I get to work. I also tend to pick at things throughout the day rather than sit down and eat a big meal. I became frustrated at my son’s refusal to eat anything at breakfast and the fact that he would take four bites at meal time and then be finished only to come back to the pantry 30 minutes later. Then I realized he was developing my habits. I have started sitting down at the table with him at meal time and everything changed. He is even developing better table manners.

Ten tips that are not to be sniffed at

Lifestyle

Keep your mind, body and spirit active

Is there really any way of avoiding
the winter cold?

Listen carefully and you'll hear it. A cough here, a snuffle there: it's the insidious return of the dreaded winter cold. The seasonal nip in the air and the premature fading of daylight inevitably coincides with the first round of cold and flu. Before long, buses, trains and offices will be rocking with the force of communal spluttering and sneezing.

The average adult catches between two and five colds a year, while children can suffer up to 10. There are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold and flu, and usually the signs of infection strike 18 to 24 hours after the virus enters the body. So unless you're a hermit, is there really any way of avoiding the winter cold?

Sue Baic, a spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, believes that eating badly can wreak havoc on blood sugar levels, which leaves you lethargic and your immune system low, exposing you to ailments. "What we eat has a big effect on our immune system because all the cells in it are built up from the various nutrients, protein and calories that we have in our diet," she says. "If we don't have enough of the right stuff to eat, we can't manufacture a good, healthy immune system."

1. Eat a rainbow

All green vegetables are a good source of iron and antioxidants, the natural cell detoxifiers. Those from the brassica family are particularly good for boosting the immune system: these include broccoli, cabbage, sprouts, cauliflower, kale and spinach. But while we have always been encouraged to eat our greens, Baic suggests that variety is more important.

advertisement
"Eat a rainbow: try to get as many different colours of fruit and vegetables in your five a day as you can. Greens are very good for vitamin C, which is important in helping to make healthy immune cells, but the colours are often the protective plant chemicals that we need to manufacture a healthy immune system. Vitamin A and beta carotene are found in brightly coloured fruit and vegetables. Vitamin A is needed to make a healthy skin barrier and gut barrier to stop us absorbing bacteria and viruses."

2. Indulge in some not-so-heavy metal Zinc is necessary for the functioning of the immune system as every cell in the body needs it to function correctly. It is a major ingredient in the fight against infection. Zinc and iron tend to be found alongside protein in red meat, fish, pulses and beans. "Along with selenium, zinc and iron are antioxidants so they protect damage to the body from free radicals," says Baic. "They are all involved in the whole system of how the body fights off any bacteria and viruses."
