1,000-year-old crystal ewer

1,000-year-old crystal ewer

A medieval ewer valued at £200 after being mistaken for a French claret jug fetched more than £3m yesterday after it was identified as a rare Islamic work.

The 1,000-year-old crystal ewer from the Fatimid royal treasury in Egypt, decorated with cheetahs and link chains, is one of only seven such vessels known to have survived. Dating back to the late 10th or early 11th centuries, it was carved from flawless rock crystal, which is as hard as toughened steel.

Christie's, the auctioneers, described it as "one of the rarest and most desirable works of art from the Islamic world". The ewer first resurfaced at Lawrences auctioneers in Crewkerne, Somerset, in January, under the catalogue description "A French claret jug ... £100-200". After dealers realised its potential worth, the artefact sold for £220,000. But the bid was annulled by "private agreement", prompting rumours that the vendor had agreed to sell the item along with the buyer. Christie's was contacted in June, and it invited several of the Islamic art world's most affluent buyers to view the item. The auction house bustled with Arab art enthusiasts and historians yesterday, with one describing the ewer as a "holy grail" of the Islamic world.

Leading Islamic art collections, including the Aga Khan Museum in Canada and the Museum of Islamic art in Doha, Qatar, were believed to have placed bids, although the winning buyer is not known.

Egypt – a jewel in the crown

Tourism News

Sun, sand, sea, monuments, ruins and culture

Sun, sand, sea, monuments, ruins and culture

Of all the countries along the north African coast, the jewel in the tourism crown has to be Egypt. It seems to have it all – sun, sand, sea, monuments, ruins and culture.

Egypt’s tourism sector grew 24 per cent in the past fiscal year, according to the country’s minister for economic development, Osman Mohamed Osman.

To put that into context, the World Travel and Tourism Council expects the sector to rise from 16.1 per cent of GDP this year to 17.3 per cent by 2018 – equivalent to $39.5 billion and to account for one in every seven jobs. Export earnings from foreign visitors are expected to generate $12.9 billion this year, rising to over $20 billion in 10 years’ time.

Recently released central bank figures show that Egypt recorded a balance of payments surplus of $5.4 billion in the year up to June - up from $5.2 billion a year earlier; and net services and transfer revenue from tourism jumped 32.3 per cent to $10.8 billion, whilst revenue from the Suez Canal rose 23.6 per cent to $5.2 billion due to an increase in shipping through the waterway and an increase in tonnage.

In a separate report entitled “Egypt Tourism Sector Analysis”, recently compiled by industry research firm RNCOS, it estimates that Russia, Germany, the UK and Italy are the most important jumping off points for visitors to Egypt, with the UK expected soon to outpace Germany, acquiring second rank after Russia in terms of tourist arrivals.

New airline Kiss to fly from Gatwick and Manchester

Flights starting in summer 2009

A new airline Kiss Flights has started selling seats for summer holidays to the Greek Islands, the Red Sea, Turkey and the Canary Islands.

The new airline has been set up by Gatwick airport based aviation broking company Meridian Aviation. According to its website, Kiss Flights is a "dynamic travel company ... offering an exciting programme of daily flights starting in summer 2009 to eleven of the most beautiful destinations in Europe from both Gatwick and Manchester airports".

Flights for Kiss will be operated by Viking Airlines, which is based in Sweden, using two Boeing 737s. Viking was set up in May 2003 and operates charter flights on behalf of a number of tour operators in the Mediterranean.

Kiss will offer what it describes as "affordable charter flights" to 11 destinations from Gatwick and Manchester. The Greek Islands destinations are Corfu, Crete, Kalamata, Kefalonia, Kos, Heraklion and Zante. Also on offer are Dalaman in Turkey, the Red Sea resorts of Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada, Paphos in Cyprus and the Canary Island of Lanzarote.

Hieroglyphic records

Hieroglyphic records

Although we might not think of calling these fathers of Western thought Afro-centrist, Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, and Hippocrates all acknowledged the debt owed by Greece to Egypt.

The assessment of Ancient Greece as an impromptu starting point of Western civilization therefore seems to contradict the awe held for Egypt by the Greeks, who borrowed heavily from Egyptian art, architecture, astronomy, mathematics, medicine and religion.

But from what source did Egypt derive its creative spirit? The Egyptians left hieroglyphic records revealing a personal belief to the effect that their forebears had followed the flow of the Nile from southern regions, and while retracing those steps southward along the White and Blue Niles a revealing phenomenon unfolds.

One virtually steps back in time to witness a continuation of living culture that has survived until this day. Layers of foreign interference dissolve, until Pre-dynastic Egyptian methods of agriculture, pottery, trappings of religious ceremony and even social fabric, are found to still be in some form of relative practice.

New Hurghada Village Egypt

Hurghada - growing rapidly in recent years

Hurghada - growing rapidly in recent years

The Hurghada Village Apartments is a new off-plan development in the popular resort town of Hurghada, Egypt. Located along the Red Sea coast, this city is one of the main tourist destinations in the country and has been growing rapidly in recent years. This new property development is situated away from other apartments and offers a nice holiday home with a bit of privacy as well.

There will be five floors of apartments with approximately 104 units, from studios to three bedrooms. Prices begin below £20,000 for an unfurnished apartment, which is an amazingly low price for such a popular resort destination. The complex contains a restaurant, café, bar, swimming pool, gardens, gym and convenience store and is gated for privacy. Apartments face either the mountains to the west or the swimming pool and Red Sea to the east. Top floor apartments have roof terraces that are the same size as the apartment itself. Furniture packages are available in addition to the purchase price.

Hurghada Village Apartments are nearing completion and expect to open to residents at the end of 2008 or early in 2009. The complex is located on Matar Road and is easily accessible from the international airport and main resort area. Hurghada offers great year round weather and is an ideal place for a holiday home.

Mido shines in Egypt training

Sports News

Ahmed Mido Hossam

Ahmed “Mido” Hossam

CAIRO: Middlesbrough striker Ahmed “Mido” Hossam caught the eyes during Egypt's Thursday training session ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Djibouti.

Mido is taking part in Egypt's Alexandria training camp in preparations for the Pharaos' final second stage qualifier on Oct. 12. Alongside Wigan Athletic's Amr Zaki, Mido raised the eyebrows in Thursday's training by scoring twice.

Meanwhile, Zaki ended fears about his calf injury after taking part in the whole session.
Alongside Mido and Zaki, goalkeepers Essam Al-Hadari and Abdel-Wahed Al-Sayed also gave good performances during the session. Egypt already guaranteed qualifying to the next round as they top group 12 with 12 points out of five games.

A kinder way to discipline kids

Parents & Kids

Discipline without distress

Discipline without distress

When it comes to discipline and kids, Calgarian Judy Arnall has had a bit of experience. Just a bit. You see, she's the mom of five home-schooled and happy children, who range in age from five to 15. Four boys and one girl (a 12-year-old "princess," says Arnall with a laugh).

She has drawn on her many years of experience as a mother and as a parent educator, to create a book that is literally crammed with tips and strategies to create strong parent-child relationships based on love and respect (Discipline Without Distress: 135 Tools for Raising Caring, Responsible Children Without Time-Out, Spanking, Punishment or Bribery).

She says she's hoping to give parents insight into their children's behaviour "and to help parents manage their own anger," too. "That's a big part of it," she says. "You can't talk about discipline and not talk about parent anger at the same time." So, your kid has wrecked something valuable. Or maybe they're fighting. Either way, you're mad. How does a parent go about handling their own anger, even before their kids act up?

Slow down, for one. Declutter your life, she says. Cut out activities and items that aren't necessary.

Make time for yourself, too. In five minutes, she notes, you can check your e-mail or have a cup of tea -- all "me" moments.

And get more sleep.
"Parent tiredness is a key factor in parent anger," she writes. "When we are tired, everything seems so much worse, from the state of the house to our child's behaviour."
Speaking of kids, Arnall isn't a big believer in time-outs -- the idea of sticking a kid in a quiet spot until they get over their anger.

Instead, she believes in "time-in," she says. "Some toddlers need you to help them calm down," she says. So, take the kid aside. Rub their back. Hold them. Or let them pound out their frustrations on a toy drum.

"Time-in means you're showing them how to calm down. You're talking to them, showing them what to do with their anger."

Arnall says she often meets parents of teens who say they've lost control of their children.

"And yeah, they have lost control," she says. "By the time they're teens, kids are pretty well in control of their own lives." But that doesn't mean it's too late to be a positive force in their lives. In fact, it's never too late, she says.

Start by spending time with them.
"Build your influence. Give up using punishment. Listen more than you talk -- that's a biggie," she says. "Look at discipline issues as problems to be solved. Rather than you being at war with your child, get on the same side. It's you and your child against the problem."

Tips for solving your personal 'energy crisis'

Lifestyle

Keep your mind, body and spirit active

Keep your mind, body and
spirit active

A personal energy shortage may be due to any number of factors, including poor sleep habits, inactivity, taking care of children and/or parents, poor nutrition, long hours at work, drug interactions, stress, depression and boredom.

But lack of energy may also signal a major health concern.

“If you do not feel re-energized by participating in the following energy-boosting activities, seek the advice of a medical professional to ensure that a potentially serious issue has not been overlooked,” Milner recommends.
So, how do you go about solving your energy crisis?
Here are tips recommended by the ICAA to reenergize your body and mind. - Improve your sleep habits. Go to bed earlier, don't eat before bedtime, and relax your mind by avoiding sources of stimulation for a couple of hours before sleeping. Setting a regular schedule for going to bed and waking up at the same time every day helps you feel more rested. - Be physically active for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Period. We can't say often enough how important activity is for physical and mental health.

- Ensure you eat nutritious, energy-building foods, such as whole grains and fresh vegetables. Refined, processed foods and sugars rob you of health and vigor.

- Become a better manager of your time to avoid overwork and reduce stress. Establish what is important and what is not, and learn how to say no. Learning how to better structure your use of time can add balance to your life.

- Work with your health care provider or pharmacist to reduce the number of medications you take and the potential for interactions. It's imperative for each medical professional you see to know all the prescriptions you are taking.

- Seek the advice of a wellness or fitness professional to help you manage or improve ongoing health conditions, which can cause fatigue. Take an active role in your journey towards wellness.

- And finally, keep your mind, body and spirit active and engaged. Being involved with the world around you gives meaning to life. It can also keep you from getting lonely and bored.
