Ancient skulls returned to Egypt

Matthew McClelland unearthed the skulls in his garden

Matthew McClelland unearthed the skulls in his garden

Two ancient Egyptian skulls which were found buried in a back garden in Manchester have been returned to Egypt. Matthew McClelland, 28, unearthed the skulls while digging at his home on Ivygreen Road, Chorlton, last June.
The skulls were confiscated by police and analysed by forensic experts at Oxford University, and have now been found to be genuine Egyptian artifacts.

Greater Manchester Police said the skulls, which are about 2,000 years old, had now been returned to Egypt.

An Egyptian Embassy spokesman said: "These skulls were taken back to Cairo a few weeks ago.
"They have been examined by the Head of the Antiquities Council and will need some restoration work. Once that is done they will go on show in Egypt."

The skulls were buried at the house two years ago, by a doctor who bought them as a teenager while on holiday in Sinai but when his wife said she did not like them in the house, he decided to bury them.

Opportunism will hold down prices

Opportunism will hold down prices

As the dust settles on the collapse of XL, Britain’s third-biggest holiday company, rival firms are rushing to plug the holiday gap. And it looks as if their opportunism will hold down prices – until next summer, at least.

One survey had claimed that package prices for autumn 2008 would soar by as much as 18% as late deals evaporated, but airlines last week stepped in to announce new flights. Even in the Caribbean, where XL ran six routes, operators expect to see bargains this winter. Steve Garley, of Tropical Sky, said: “I don’t think prices will rise as a result of XL collapsing, because BA and Virgin still have so many unsold seats, and hoteliers in the Caribbean are prepared to cut their rates in order to fill rooms. If people are willing to avoid Christmas and New Year, and book about six weeks ahead, they will find good deals.”

On short-haul routes, EasyJet has announced additional flights to Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Egypt and Turkey. Ryanair, which continues to add new routes out of the UK, insisted that it will keep cutting fares in order to “persuade the public to continue flying”.

Monarch Holidays said that it plans to increase flights to Greece and Sharm el Sheikh, in Egypt, targeting routes that had been served by XL. It is also poised to announce a new charter flight from Gatwick to Grenada and Tobago, starting on December 17.

What's new in snorkeling in the Red Sea?

Safety first for snorkellers in the Red Sea

Safety first for snorkellers in the
Red Sea

The Egyptian government has appointed the Chamber of Diving & Watersports (CDWS) to monitor and control diving and snorkeling activities in Egypt. The CDWS are required to regulate the snorkel excursion market to provide a consistent and safe environment to the many visitors of the Red Sea. PADI (The Professional Association of Diving Instructors) have jointly developed a Snorkel Guide training programme to certify individuals who conduct these excursions.

This programme was recently launched to the diving and snorkeling community through a series of presentations hosted in Sharm El Sheikh in the South Sinai and Hurghada on the Red Sea mainland.

This new professional rating will ensure that all snorkel guides are trained in First Aid/CPR, and have knowledge of the local environment, together with relevant safety and rescue skills. Elements of the training will also ensure that supervision and environmental considerations are a high priority.

The CDWS will continue to develop relationships with the major training agencies and experts to maintain and improve the quality of diving and watersports throughout Egypt.

A look at how Egypt has influenced Western pop culture

Culture

1999 movie: The Mummy

1999 Movie: The Mummy

With today’s splashy opening of the Dallas Museum of Art’s blockbuster exhibit "Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs," it would be shortsighted to associate Egypt and King Tut only with things ancient, archaeological or generally irrelevant to today.

This show that celebrates Egypt’s historic bigwig gets us reflecting on how different aspects of pop culture owe something either to Egypt or to the king himself.

The following is an arbitrary list of how King Tut and Egyptology have swept in like a Nile breeze over our pop culture lives.

Music

Walk Like an Egyptian — The lyrics to this 1985 smash hit by the all-girl group the Bangles is wallpapered with Egyptian references (the Nile, tomb paintings, hookah pipes). Back in the day, some club crawlers attempted to do the song’s "sand dance." All together now: "Whey oh whey oh whey."

King Tut — In 1978, quirkily cerebral comedian Steve Martin, sporting a golden headdress and backed up by his hand-picked band the Toot Uncommons, warbled this bizarre, totally original song.

Movies

The Mummy — This enduring genre reared its bandaged head with the 1932 original starring the monstrously talented Boris Karloff. Commercial life imitated fantasy as the "Mummy" film franchise began to walk the earth again in 1999, this time starring the rubber-faced Brendan Fraser.

Cleopatra — In 1934, Claudette Colbert played the wonderfully manipulative ruler in a grand production directed by epic-meister Cecil B. DeMille. The 1963 flick of the same name was infamous for being an over-budget exercise in self-indulgence featuring Elizabeth Taylor with lots of eyeliner and an evil-looking jet-black bob. The Jewel of the Nile — The 1985 sequel to the hugely successful popcorn adventure Romancing the Stone, it paired Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a feuding twosome who — what a surprise — eventually fall in love. The Prince of Egypt — This 1998 animated film features an engaging Egyptian prince grappling with his fate to lead his people.

The new Novotel Palm resort’s villa-esque

The new Novotel Palm resort -
Villa-Esque

Novotel Sharm El-Sheikh expands for the young at heart and those who like to take them on vacation The Novotel Sharm El-Sheikh is thinking small. In March, the resort opened the 185-room Novotel Palm, a family-oriented getaway across the main road from the original Novotel Beach property in Naama Bay. The combination is sure to please both old and young.

Particularly the young: The Novotel Palm features special rooms that can house a family of five with kid-sized sleeping nooks. Three pools, a roller rink, a water park and playground with jungle gym all but guarantee that, come bedtime, the wee ones will sleep soundly in those nooks. To give parents time to themselves, the resort’s Kids Club has supervised programs to occupy children six-12 years old including arts and crafts, pool and beach games and a circus school. Set a few hundred meters from Novotel’s reception and dining areas, the Palm’s rooms have a villa-like feel, with separate entrances onto gentle grassy slopes.

The Novotel Beach is more oriented to those without children, with rooms overlooking the pool and sea. The Beach rooms are simply appointed, with nice-sized balconies, and all the resort standards: TV, desk, chair and basic bathroom with walk-in shower. The décor is understated, but attractive in white, deep burgundy and pale wood accents.

Spirit is key to World Cup dream, says Shehata

Egypt coach: optimistic for 2010

Egypt coach: optimistic for 2010

CAIRO: Egypt coach Hassan Shehata believes his side would reach the 2010 World Cup should they maintain the fighting spirit that helped them claim the Nations Cup title earlier this year.

Optimism rebounded among Egyptian fans after the team clinched their second successive Nations Cup in February. Egypt had outplayed some of Africa’s top guns like Cameroon and Ivory Coast.

And Shehata stressed the importance of the players having the same fighting spirit that saw them triumph in Ghana. “I’m doing my best to help the players regain that spirit,” the 59-year-old coach told Al-Masry Al-Youm. The fighting spirit is one of Egypt’s most important weapons. It gives us an advantage whenever we face a powerful team. Once Egypt get it, we would have no problem reaching the World Cup finals for the first time since 1990.”

The Pharaohs have virtually advanced to the final phase of the qualifiers. They just need a draw against minnows Djibouti at home on Oct. 12 to ensure their progress as Group 12 leaders.

Best Baby and Toddler Websites

Parents & Kids

A website that grows with your child

A website that grows with your child

Parenting is not easy. It comes with a lot of unknowns and as a result, parents have a lot of questions. While we are living in the information age and can Google just about anything under the sun, the amount of information available can sometimes be overwhelming. Plus, we parents are busy. Who has time to sort through pages and pages of search results?
To help save you a little time, here is a list of the best online sources for baby and toddler advice and information.

Baby Center- Probably the most well-known baby site, Baby Center provides everything from age and development timelines, to community forums, to educational videos and other digital media, to the latest news and product recalls, to a products bargain hunter and coupon deals, and articles on every baby and toddler topic under the sun. Just about anything and everything you can think of is covered on this site. The information and advice is credible and thorough. The site is user-friendly and free. You can sign up for email alerts and informative newsletters. You can shop the site's store. You can use the site's handy tools, such as the Due Date Calculator, the Baby Name Finder, the Height Predictor, the Development Calendar and the Immunization Scheduler, to name a few. You can be as involved as you want by signing up with other mom groups, or just browse the site for information when you need it. The best part about Baby Center is that it grows with you and your child. You can be a member from the time you are trying to conceive (Baby Center Getting Pregnant) and continue using its resources relevant to you and your child all the way through grade school (Baby Center Big Kid).

Parenting - The home of Parenting and Babytalk magazines, this site offers many of the same features and tools as Baby Center. Like Baby Center, there is a lot of helpful information under an endless list of relevant topics. There are similar tools and community forums. Depending on your preferences for website style and article writing, you may find it more or less suitable for your needs than Baby Center. One main difference is that Parenting.com has a lot of promotional ads and shout-outs to its magazing affiliates. Although the site is free, there is always a lurking reminder to sign up for a magazine subscription, which of course, is not.

Tips From a Budget Traveller

Lifestyle

Travel is a way of life

Travel is a way of life

Even the most seasoned travellers and travel experts keep an eye out for the latest deals and insider information, and pinch pennies all the while. It's definitely not cool to overspend on travel, the trend is finding an innovative deal to not only put money in your pocket, but to give you miles of bragging rights.

For me, travel is a way of life, a philosophy, and getting the most out of my budget is a part of that lifestyle. If you think you can only get a good deal by knowing the ins and outs of the travel industry, well... you're right. But even the greenest of travellers can take a few minutes to school themselves on finding the best discounts, and learn ways to combat unforeseen travel mishaps.
Did you know that airline carriers are required to release new airfares to a clearinghouse called the Airline Tariff Publishing Company at certain hours? On weekdays, the best times to look for new and discounted fares are just after 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and midnight. Travel agents know that tickets that were reserved but never paid usually reappear just after midnight, so the selection peaks during the late night hours. But for weekends, don't kill yourself logging in every few hours, they're only updated once a day, around 5pm.

If you know your travel plans are set in stone, always check-in as early as possible. Most airlines allow up to a 24-hour advance check-in online. If the flight is overbooked and no one will volunteer to take a later flight, the last people who checked-in are bumped first. My in-laws found this out the hard way after our wedding.
