Egypt finds granite statue, likely of Ramses

News

One of ancient Egypt's most powerful pharaohs

One of ancient Egypt's most powerful pharaohs

Egyptian archaeologists have discovered a granite statue probably depicting the head of Ramses II, one of ancient Egypt's most powerful pharaohs, the country's culture ministry said on Wednesday.

Researchers discovered the statue 150 cm (five feet) under ground in the eastern Nile Delta town of Tell Basta, which was once the capital of ancient Egypt, the culture ministry said.

The pink granite statue had a broken nose and a missing beard, Zahi Hawass, the head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, said in a statement. Archaeologists are continuing to dig around the site in hopes of finding the rest of the statue and possible remains of a temple built by Ramses, he said.

Ramses, one of Egypt's longest-serving pharaohs, is believed to have ruled between 1279 BC and 1213 BC. He built palaces and temples throughout Egypt, including the famous Abu Simbel temple in the far south.

Also known as Ramses the Great, he is traditionally believed to be the pharaoh mentioned in the biblical story of Moses. A popular feature on postcards, he presided over a period of military expansion in Egypt.

His mummy was discovered in 1881 and shortly afterwards was moved to Cairo's Egyptian Museum.

English document found: Britain owes Egypt £29 billion!

£29 billion according to current exchange rates

£29 billion according to current exchange rates

An Egyptian expert has found a crucial document proving that Egypt lent Britain £3 million during the Great War and the debt has been owing since that time.

Dr. Ashraf Sabry, underwater scientist and experienced wreck diver, stated that he discovered this document within the Egyptian and the British documents section at the Royal Archive in London.

According to this document, this debt was recorded in the Covenant and the secretariats, Lord Melz and 5 generals and ministers, acknowledged it. The rights of Egypt to claim this debt have been stressed, which is now worth up to £29 billion according to current exchange rates.

Experts in international law re-enforced that the Egyptian government has no right to waive this debt because it is the people's money. They said that the only body able to decide to waive the debt is the Parliament.

The question now is, will the Egyptian government claim this debt, with interest, from Great Britain?

Egyptian destinations for sun lovers

Egyptian destinations for sun lovers

The Latvian airline airBaltic will launch its winter timetable on October 26, 2008, offering four new destinations and increased numbers of flights along nine routes. The timetable will remain in effect until March 28, 2009. During the course of the winter, airBaltic will offer 49 routes from Riga and 14 from Vilnius.

Bertolt Flick, president and CEO of airBaltic:

- We are launching these new destinations and increasing the number of flights from Riga because of growing demand. airBaltic serves almost 50 destinations, and there are more than 60 destinations in total which are accessible from the Riga International Airport, and because of this, increasing numbers of people from Estonia and Lithuania are choosing to travel via Riga.”

During the winter, airBaltic will offer four new destinations from its base in Riga – Amsterdam (the Netherlands, daily), Hannover (Germany, five times a week), Tampere (Finland, twice a day), and Dubai (United Arab Emirates, twice a week). As is the case each winter, airBaltic will also offer flights to two Egyptian destinations for sun lovers – Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh.

Below the surface: Dahab is still a diver’s haven

Diving News

Dahab Diving

Dahab Diving

Over the years, tourism to the tiny town of Dahab had been growing, but the industry came to a near halt after the April 2006 bombings.

More than two years later, with checkpoints and police stations cluttering the Sinai peninsula, visitors are returning to Dahab to enjoy the beauty of the Red Sea and relax in the tranquil town.

Situated on the northeast coast of the Sinai, about six hours from Cairo and a far cry from the commercialization of nearby Sharm El-Sheikh, Dahab lies on blue waters of the Gulf of Aqaba. Accommodations to fit every budget abound, from camps for the most frugal traveler to the flashy self-contained Hilton Resort. Snorkelers, sun worshippers, and desert enthusiasts can find plenty to do around Dahab, but the town’s true appeal lies in diving.

With over 20 unique dive sites in and around the town, warm water and clear visibility, diving conditions in Dahab are superb. Deciding who to dive with, one is spoiled for choice as an assortment of dive shops line Dahab’s boardwalk, catering to a wide selection of nationalities. English, French, Russian, and German-language shops tout trips to the dive-sites and offer courses from a one day Introduction Dive to the month-long Dive Master.

Abdel-Aziz calls for league focus

Ayman Abdel-Aziz (left)

CAIRO: Zamalek skipper Ayman Abdel-Aziz asked his teammates to maintain a good performance throughout the League games form following their ousting of the CAF Champions League on Sunday.

The Whites were eliminated from the African competition with a 1-0 away loss to Dynamos Harare. The result left them bottom of quarter final group A. "I told all the players that now we should focus on the league and forget the Dynamos defeat," Abdel-Aziz told Zamalek's official website on Monday. "Winning the next two postponed games against Egypt Telecom and Tersana will be of a paramount importance for our league competence." Zamalek will be up against Telecom on Sept. 26 before clashing with Tersana three days later.

Top tips for flying with children

Parents & Kids

Flying with Children

Flying with Children

One crying infant on a plane can be enough to push a plane-full of passengers into their parachutes. The only age that is remotely easy for parents is from birth to about six-months when all they can’t move, can be strapped to you, fit nicely in the bassinets, and can be thrown a boob or bottle at any point.

The nightmare age is from one to two years, when children don’t understand they have to sit still, be quiet and be well behaved for a long period of time.

What doesn’t change though, no matter what age the child, is the amount of preparation and hand luggage needed for a single flight.

Some tips to make flying with children easier:
1-If you have a toddler it might be best to leave boarding as late as possible. The goal is to keep the kids OFF the plane as long as possible.

2- Organise items by parent: One parent takes necessities (wipes, nappies, snacks) and the other carries the toys and books. That way you won’t be digging through your bags trying to remember where everything is. Skip the book for yourself. Who are you kidding?! Change your baby at the airport as their facilities are a lot more roomy than on a plane.

3- If your child is screaming, and the only thing that makes it stop is to walk around the plane, do it! Asking a two-year-old to sit still for nine hours is child abuse.

4- If your child is screaming, and has been travelling all day, and you are tired, they probably are too. Don’t try to keep them up. Let them sleep on you if they need to. Sometimes just making a pseudo-bed for them out of airline blankets and tiny paper-covered pillows isn’t enough. Your kid wants to snuggle with you, so let them.

A healthy lifestyle comes down to individual choice

Body and soul

Life is full of choices

Life is full of choices

Life is full of choices. If you think about it, our days are essentially one choice after another. The world is a place of maps, directions, social norms, consequences and often too many options to choose from.

There are many options when it comes to most things we purchase, from a box of cereal to tennis shoes to cars. We make several choices throughout the day without much thought; others require much more time.

Some of our daily choices have an immediate impact, while others have repercussions several years in the future. Those with an immediate impact appear more important than those with an unknown outcome somewhere down the line.

Our personal health decisions often don't have immediate impact. Weight gain doesn't happen overnight; rather it tends to keep creeping up. Being and staying physically fit is an ongoing process.

Internal motivation drives health behaviours. This motivation may be the feeling of accomplishment for having walked for 60 minutes or the boost of energy from getting a good night's sleep. There may have been a family health scare or a strong desire to look better.
