El Gouna Seeks Podium Position with Ferrari Sponsorship

News

El Gouna Marina

El Gouna Marina

Next month the Red Sea resort, El Gouna, will sponsor a Ferrari in the Nuerburgring leg of the prestigious Ferrari Challenge 2008 from the 3 – 5 October.

The sponsorship deal falls in line with El Gouna’s branding as a resort destination offering a plethora of sporting activities for adventure seeking visitors as well as highlighting El Gouna as a Luxury Leisure Destination. The Ferrari Challenge has been taking place across Europe since March and will conclude with the finals taking place in November.

The El Gouna team are holding high hopes for this year’s tournament, with their eyes set firmly on a podium place. Unfortunately, last year an accident ruined their plans to secure a finishing position. Hopefully the fact that the driver Cristiano Uva enjoyed a short break in El Gouna before the beginning of the new season will spur him on to the finishing line.

Egypt bucks the credit crunch and thrives as a property hotspot

News

Invest

Invest

Even though the credit crunch is biting hard, investors from all over the world are still making their presence known in the overseas property markets. Whether it is in Dubai or another locale, the trend for buying overseas property continues to flourish.

Hurghada in Egypt offers a great deal of potential for investors interested in all three strategies. This is borne out by the anticipated capital growth in the region and the steady rise of tourism within Egypt itself. Tourism grew by 7.9% in 2007 with a steady climb at least through 2017, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. Some estimates have tourism figures doubling over the next few years.

safari boats must have a licence to legally operate

safari boats must have a licence to legally operate

Egypt's newly established Chamber of Diving and Watersports (CDWS) says improving safety and protecting the marine environment are its main priorities, as it aims to ensure the entire industry meets European Underwater Federation (EUF) standards.

Operating under the Egyptian Tourist Federation's governmental umbrella, the CDWS is the first body to officially regulate Egypt's diving and watersports industry.

'We have a responsibility to try to put order into a sector which until now has not been officially regulated,' Hesham Gabr Ali, CDWS board member and manager of Sharm El Sheikh's Camel Dive Club, told DIVE. 'We looked for existing laws and regulations in Europe. The CDWS signed an agreement with the Austrian Standards Institute [the certification arm of the EUF] so we could have a clear, internationally recognised standard set. The chamber will also be the mechanism of communication between the sector and Ministry of Tourism.'

From November 2008, all dive centres and safari boats must be members of the CDWS to apply for a mandatory Egyptian Ministry of Tourism licence to legally operate in the country. Currently, about 320 dive centres and 80 safari boats are CDWS members.

Independent auditors have already begun what is expected to be an 18-month process of checking that every dive business meets EN 14467/ISO 24803 regulations. Everything from training standards to hire equipment and air fills must meet the European requirements. Audits take two to four days to complete, and operators must pass inspections to qualify for or renew CDWS membership.

There are also plans to train skippers and crews on Egyptian leisure industry boats in seamanship to recognised standards, first aid skills and environmental awareness.

Glowing Red Fluoro-Fish Discovered

News

The red fluorescence of the highcrest triplefin fish, or Enneapterygius pusillus

Fanous Ramadan

Researchers from the University of Tübingen in Germany have discovered a glowing, fluorescent red fish. Generally, red fish are hard to find in the sea, because red light from the sun is absorbed by the water's surface.

However, researchers now have noted "that red fluorescence is widespread among marine fish." The fish was discovered quite by accident by German scientist Nico Michiels. He was diving in Mangrove Bay, which is in the Red Sea.

Michiels wore red light-seeing goggles on the dive. He told press: "We are convinced that we are the first ones to discover it [red fluorescence in fish] in the field and to recognize it as such an important phenomenon in reef fish."

Hollmann unhappy with kick-off time

Hollmann unhappy with kick-off time

CAIRO: Zamalek coach Reiner Hollmann hit out at Confederation of African Football (CAF) for setting an afternoon kick-off for his side’s clash against Dynamos Harare.

The German tactician believes it will be unfair for Zamalek players to play while fasting in Sunday’s Champions League encounter.

“The fact that my players will be fasting should have been taken into consideration by CAF,” Hollmann told a press conference on Wednesday.

"They should have chosen a time that suits both teams. Zamalek must have as equal chances as those of Dynamos. “However, I fully trust my players’ abilities to claim all three points and qualify for the semi-final."

Tips on giving medicine to kids

Parents & Kids

Sweeten it up

Sweeten it up

Many parents have trouble getting their children to swallow the liquids and pills they need to be healthy. Virginia pharmacist Tara Kompare has created an acronym called "MED TIPS" to help:

- Music magic. Put on music, sing and do a funny dance to distract them.

- Encourage participation. Even toddlers - who love to do things for themselves - can help measure doses and put medicine in their mouths under careful supervision.

- Delivery device. Try out different options for giving medicine, such as pacifier dispensers, dose cups and syringes. Let children decide which one they like best.

- Trickery. Disguise the taste with chocolate milk, yogurt or ice cream (although be sure to check with your pharmacist first to make sure a particular medicine can be mixed safely with dairy products). Using reverse psychology also can work - as in, "Don't you dare take that medicine!"

- Imitations. Make animal noises together to get kids to laugh and/or open their mouths. Or pretend they're magicians and ask them to make medicine disappear.

- Pace yourself. Let your kids decide whether they want to take medicine in one big gulp or little sips.

- Sweeten it up. Many pharmacies can add flavours into your child's prescription on request. At home, you can mix some sugar or chocolate or caramel syrup directly into liquid medicines or coat the spoon with them. Just be sure to explain that medicine isn't candy and kids should never take it outside an adult's supervision. And store medications well out of their reach.

Healthy living 'halves risk of early death'

Body and soul

Increase your life quality

Increase your life quality

Women, please note — if you want to spend your later years free from diseases like cancer and heart ailment, it's time you adopt a healthier lifestyle.

A new study has revealed that women could halve the risk of premature death if they exercise daily, eat healthily and keep their weight in check, the British Medical Journal reported in its latest edition.

In fact, researchers have found that following all four lifestyle tips could cut 44 per cent of cancer and 72 per cent of cardiovascular deaths in women.

According to lead researcher Dr Rob van Dam of Harvard Medical School, "In busy, modern life it's more difficult to adapt to these factors, but people don't have to spend hours lifting heavy weights.

"It's simple dietary changes like eating more whole grains and less red meat, walking to work and to the grocery shop, these really add up. And of course the thing to state is not to smoke."

In the 24-year study, 80,000 women, aged 34 to 59, completed questionnaires every two years about their diet, frequency of physical activity, alcohol intake, weight, how much they smoked, and disease history.

The researchers traced 28 per cent of the 8,882 deaths to smoking while 55 per cent were attributed to combination of smoking, being overweight, not doing enough exercise daily and a poor diet, the BBC News portal reported.

Drinking too much alcohol also contributed, but women with "light-to-moderate" alcohol consumption of upto one drink a day were less likely to die from cardiovascular diseases than teetotallers, the researchers found.

"It seems to be that drinking a little alcohol can lower the risk of heart disease, but you have to look at the overall picture too. People who drink a lot of alcohol have a higher risk of dying from cancer," Dam said.
