The new giant clam species has a deeply folded shell outline

The fossil record suggests that, about 125,000 years ago, the species Tridacna costata accounted for more than 80% of local giant clams.

The species may now be critically endangered, researchers report in Current Biology journal. The scientists believe their findings may represent one of the earliest examples of the over-exploitation of marine organisms by humans.

Sharm El-Sheikh

Sharm El-Sheikh

The summer just doesn’t feel right without trips to the beach, endless barbeques and noticeable tan lines, but once again the British climate has failed to provide the appropriate conditions. Many will write off the year as a waste, but others will be looking for holidays abroad to take in some much-needed autumn sun.

One place that is becoming increasingly popular is Sharm el-Sheikh, which is found on the coastal strip between the Red Sea and Mount Sinai. Previously used primarily as a port, environmental restrictions have had a huge effect on commercial shipping and tourism has taken over as lead industry. As a result, Sharm el-Sheikh is now a beach resort and is home to a large number of hotels, restaurants bars and shopping opportunities, which range from malls to local souks. What’s more, with rain rarely clouding the sky, the bounty of beaches are used all year round and the waters have been discovered by enthusiastic scuba divers and snorkelers to be among the finest in the world.

Conservationists call for Red Sea 'no catch zone'

Illegal Fishing

Illegal Fishing

Conservationists and diving organisations are calling on the Egyptian government to declare the Red Sea a 'no catch zone'. The Hurghada Environmental Protection Association (HEPCA) said the Red Sea would resemble an 'ugly, empty lake' if the government did not act to stop illegal fishing.

'The National Authority of Fisheries recently issued a decree banning all fishing in the Egyptian Red Sea for a period of three months,' said managing director of HEPCA Amr Ali. 'Sadly, this decree was not observed. Exceptions were taken and fishing continued in parts of the Red Sea with the justification of the social needs of the fisherman and their families.'

New Egyptian Resort

New Egyptian Resort

Egypt is home to one of the world's top ten up-and-coming resorts one expert has advised holidaymakers this month.

According to a piece of research conducted by travel firm Hostelworld, the city of Aswan in Egypt is fast gaining ground with globetrotters.

The firm says that those seeking a bargain break in sunnier climes should visit the Egyptian city before prices soar and the "crowds of tourists take over".

Holiday news website travelbite.co.uk adds that Aswan is one of the Egypt's sunniest southern cities noting that visitors can enjoy its "bustling market" during their trip.

Furthermore, online tourist information website the Aswan Guide says that in the city the Nile is at its "most beautiful, flowing through amber desert and granite rocks, round emerald islands covered in palm groves and tropical plants". Holidaymakers visiting Egypt could turn their trip to Aswan into a twin-destination break with the popular diving resort of Sharm El Sheikh.

Ramadan month of the Islamic calendar

Each year, Muslims spend the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observing a community-wide fast. The annual fast of Ramadan is considered one of the five "pillars" of Islam. Muslims who are physically able are required to fast each day of the entire month, from sunrise to sunset. The evenings are spent enjoying family and community meals, engaging in prayer and spiritual reflection, and reading from the Qu'ran.

Egypts captain Hamdy

President Mubarak wants to know why Egypt did so badly in Beijing and has set up a fact-finding committee to see what went wrong. We all want to know how is it that from a 177-strong delegation we sent to the Olympics, they got just one lowly bronze medal between them.

Tips to beat the morning rush

Parents & Kids

Easing the morning rush

Easing the morning rush

It’s time to head back to school, and you know what that means: Time to get the kids out of bed and out the door. Easier said than done. As the school year begins, start fresh with these tips on easing the morning rush, from parenting consultant Bonnie Harris, author of the forthcoming book Confident Parents, Remarkable Kids: 8 Principles for Raising Kids You’ll Love to Live With:

- ID the problem. Get to the cause of the behaviour. For example, a slow-as-molasses child doesn’t have the morning person biology; a clingy child has trouble making transitions; a distracted child can’t focus on more than one thing at a time.

- Turn it upside-down. Let her know it’s not her fault, it’s OK to be the way she is and you know how she feels. Find something positive in the behaviour. For the slow mover, for example, you could say, “You’re so lucky not to be one of those revved up, go-go-go people in the morning. People are going to love being around such a calm person.”

- No name-calling. Refrain from telling your child he’s pokey, lazy, whiny, bull-headed, crabby or any other disparaging label. That blames the child for his character, reinforces those negative behaviours and sets him up to fail.

- Start the day with smiles. Instead of yelling or threats to get children out of bed, try using a soft voice and a back rub. Give plenty of hugs and kisses. Exude calmness and happiness.

Maximize your time!

Body and soul

Maximizing time

Maximizing time

Classes, projects and parties are all part of the college experience, but one more piece of the puzzle is stress. Many factors can cause stress, but one major contributor is a lack of time management. Time management is the No. 1 thing people struggle with, said Christine Connerly, Student Learning Center supplemental instruction coordinator. The center offers time management training during the semester, offering tips, tricks and lifestyle changes to set a person up to succeed. Here are some recommendations:

1) Buy a planner and use it. This is a great way to keep track of what needs to get done and when there is time for recreation. Updating it as projects are assigned helps keep track of when things are due and allows consolidation of all project due dates.

2) Break up big projects into smaller projects and estimate how long a project will take. When a student gets a due date, they can use it to plan backward and set times when certain parts of a project need to be done.

3) Prioritize. There will probably be times where there are multiple things to do and no time to do them all. In that case, students need to decide what is most important to them and what will help achieve their goals. 4) Set goals for the semester. Students shouldn't make unrealistic expectations of themselves, but find a balance between work, school and a social life.

5) Know when to say "yes" or "no." Students should take into account all that they have to do before they say "yes" and know when to say "no." oil).
