Diving in Red Sea Egypt

Sharm El Sheikh has been named as the world's best location for diving holidays, in a new top ten dive spots list released by Cheapflights.co.uk.

They also recommend salsa alongside the fishes of Cuba, doing the Luau apres scuba in Hawaii and taking underwater snaps of the spectacular Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

The protected reefs of the Sinai Peninsula in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt are famed for the exquisite variety of coral found there. Additional underwater residents include clownfish, sea eels, and blacktip reef sharks - not to mention all of the land activities visitors can enjoy apres scuba.

Hurghada’s marine life struggles under irresponsible tourism

Even with warnings against feeding the fish, tourists continue to do so

Even with warnings against feeding the fish, tourists continue to do so

HURGHADA : "When I spent my honeymoon on the Red Sea coast in the early 1950s we needed official permission to come to the area — it took about a month and a half to be issued."

Fifty-odd years after he spent a holiday in the wilderness, architect Samir El-Sonbati now advises the Red Sea Governorate on city planning.
He is based in Hurghada, an area which has gone from a fishing village to a sprawling city in less than 20 years. "I’ve been an advisor for 12 years and nobody wants to listen. Everyday I wake up and think, ‘What am I going to stop today?" El-Sonbati told Daily News Egypt.

El-Sonbati is also a board member of HEPCA, the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association, which has taken upon itself the unenviable task of defending the Red Sea’s natural resources against the relentless encroachment of tourism and the urbanization it has spawned.

Amr Ali, HEPCA’s formidable managing director, calls it "waving the flag" — an attempt to stand in the path of a mammoth profit-fueled industry deaf to conservationists and their whining about the turtles and the coral reefs.

Red Sea Jazz

Red Sea Jazz

As swan songs go, this year's Red Sea Jazz Festival should send founding artistic director Danny Gottfried off to retirement - or his next project - with the sound of thunderous applause ringing in his 69-year-old ears.

Gottfried may have had his detractors from among the local jazz fan base since he took the helm at the very first Red Sea jazz bash back in 1987 but this year's program is littered with big names. And just in case anyone hasn't noticed, and it would be hard to miss, the annual Eilat jazz four-dayer is an unqualified success, attracting thousands of jazz fans of all types and ages to the Port of Eilat each year.

The Red Sea Jazz Festival is a bona fide member of the international jazz circuit and each year thousands of Israelis, and a few tourists too, throng the Port of Eilat compound, grooving in the ship container delineated concert stage areas and hanging out in the central esplanade, munching their way through a wide variety of gastronomic delights, washed down with a pint or two of beer or a glass of wine. There are even those who just go there to soak up the vibes from the central area and chill out - at least emotionally - as a warm breeze wafts in from the sea.

BERLIN : Bundesliga clubs Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund announced Sunday they were exchanging their respective strikers Mohamed Zidan and Mladen Petric.

"I'm really delighted to be able to play for Hamburg now," said Croatian international Petric.

Egypt's Zidan, 26, added: "Of course it's a bit of a pity that I'm leaving Hamburg and the club but I think it's a good decision for me. I need to play and to continue to develop."

Tips for helping kids develop healthy eating habits

Parents & Kids

Healthy eating habits

Healthy eating habits

With obesity still plaguing the country, here are the Top 10 ways to help children develop healthy habits.

Be a positive role model. If you're practicing healthy habits, it's a lot easier to convince children to do the same.

1. Get the whole family active. Plan times for everyone to get moving together. Take walks, ride bikes, go swimming, garden or just play hide-and-seek outside. Everyone will benefit from the exercise and the time together.

2. Limit TV, video game and computer time. These activites lead to a sedentary lifestyle and excessive snacking, which increase risks for obesity and cardiovascular disease.

3. Encourage physical activities. Every child is unique, so let them experiment with different sports until they finds something they really love doing. They'll stick with it longer if they love it.

4. Be supportive. Focus on the positive instead of the negative. Everyone likes to be praised for a job well done. Celebrate successes and help children and teens develop a good self-image.

10 Tips for Choosing Heart-Healthy Summer Salads

Body and soul

Healthy Summer Salad

Healthy Summer Salad

Summer is a great time of year to get more fruit and veggies into our diet, and salads usually come top of the list when the weather gets hot. However, if you're likely to choose creamy based pastas, or fatty salad dressings, your meal could end up being more calorific than you'd care to imagine!

Often we're guilty of choosing food at random, without stopping to think carefully if we're making the healthiest choice. So, before you begin making your choices, take a moment to look over the selection (at the salad bar, or at home), so that you can choose wisely.

A good rule of thumb to help you stay on track is that half your plate should be filled with vegetables that are leafy, raw, and without dressing. After this, you can begin choosing meats and other side options.

Here are 10 simple steps to a healthier salad bar meal:

1. Choose dark green leafs as your base, for example baby spinach leaves, endive, or mixed leaves. These are a better option than iceberg lettuce, which contains very few vitamins and minerals.

2. Try to have a rainbow of colors on your plate so that you benefit from a range of nutrients. For example beetroot, red and green peppers, mushrooms, cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and onions.

3. Avoid veggie salads (such as coleslaw, potato salad) or pasta in mayonnaise, marinades, or dressings, as these that tend to be very high in fat.

4. Go for pulses - they are high in fibre, making you feel fuller for longer, and they're an excellent source of protein. You could try soya beans, chickpeas, lima beans, or five bean mixes (but avoid those laden with oil).
