Exciting new one-day wreck trip from Marsa Alam and Hurghada

Guests diving at Emperor Divers’ centres in Marsa Alam and Hurghada can now enjoy one of the newest and most exciting wrecks in the Red Sea on a day trip.

The day is spent relaxing on the beach at Emperor’s Safaga dive centre, where a generous three-course lunch separates two dives on the El Arish El Tor. The wreck is a five-minute speedboat ride from the beach and normally has no more than five divers on it at any one time.

Built in 1981 in Bergen, Norway, the El Arish El Tor was a passenger ferry that operated between Saudi Arabia and Egypt. It was sold in 1999 and then remained in Safaga until its unexplained sinking in 2002. It went down with no one on board, but with all its fixtures still in place. The ship’s name is still visible on the bow and stern and the company logo adorns the funnel.

The majority of the dive takes place between 25m and 18m on this large wreck – around 105 metres long – and harbours a huge variety of marine life including massive schools of barracudas and Jacks as well as velvetfishes and soldierfish all against a background of cascading soft corals. There is plenty of definition on the wreck too, poking your head into the bridge shows the instruments still largely intact, seats and tables can still be seen in the passenger areas and the enormous propellers are alive with stunning soft coral.

The first dive allows guests to gain an overview of the scale of the wreck, whilst the second allows a more thorough exploration of the details and intricacies including the massive winches, lifejackets, lifeboats and even the pictures on the walls!

Soccer-Hassan strikes winner as Al Ahli clinch Cairo derby

Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan made a dream return home to Cairo on Sunday, scoring a stunning winning goal as Al Ahli beat Zamalek 2-1 in the African Champions League.

Hassan, making his debut for the Cairo giants after signing from Belgium's Anderlecht, drilled home a free kick from the edge of the penalty area in the 67th minute to ensure an Al Ahli win in their opening Group A game.

Hassan chose Al Ahli over Zamalek in a ferocious bidding war earlier this year and made a strong impression in the derby.

Al Ahli had taken a 28th-minute lead when Angolan Gilberto dispossessed Mohamed Abdallah to provide a cross for his compatriot Flavio to convert. But Zamalek snatched an equaliser in the 63rd minute when a snap effort from Gamal Hamza caught out the Red Devils defence.

"I warned my players before that it would be a game decided in favour of the team that makes the least mistakes," said Zamalek's new German coach Reiner Hollmann, who 10 years ago was coach of an all-conquering Ahli side.

Hassan, who led Egypt to the African Nations Cup title earlier this year, said he was thrilled with the debut goal. "It feels good to be back home," he told reporters.

Slumber Party

There comes a time in every parent's life when she hears those dreaded words, "Can I pleeeeeeease have a sleepover?" Don't let the visions of wild kids alarm you—try some of these practical ideas, instead..

Concerned about having a bunch of kids at your house for an entire evening? Hosting a sleepover can be fun! The key to a successful slumber party involves keeping guests occupied. Sure, you could pop popcorn and have everyone watch a video, but that usually leads to popcorn fights and bored kids. Mix and match these suggestions for keeping kids busy (which we all know leads to happier parents). The first few minutes of a sleepover set the tone for the night. When kids are actively involved as they arrive, the message says, "We will not be running through the house in an out-of-control manner—but we will have fun!"

- As kids arrive, direct them to a table where they can decorate cookies for a later snack, work on a craft project, or help mix a batch of homemade play clay.

- Every party needs decorations! Enlist kids to blow up balloons and hang streamers. Why can't you wrap crepe paper around the toilet to add to the festive atmosphere?

After everyone has arrived, engage the group in some of these fun activities:

Who's Who in the Bag?: Can kids disguise their voices while inside a sleeping bag? Spread out all the sleeping bags in one room. Select a person to leave the room. Everyone else climbs inside a sleeping bag, pulling the tops shut. The remaining kid ("It") comes back in the room and taps a sleeping bag. Then she asks a question such as "What's your favorite food?" or "Who is your favorite rock star?" The person inside the sleeping bag disguises her voice to answer the question while "It" tries to guess their name. "It" can rotate from sleeping bag to sleeping bag, asking different questions. If she guesses correctly, the person inside the stuffy sleeping bag gets to come out for some fresh air!

Paper Bag Skits: Before your guests arrive, fill three to four large paper bags with an assortment of unrelated items. You could fill a bag with something like a spatula, broken sunglasses, a bicycle helmet, and a pillow. When ready to begin, divide the sleepover participants into groups of two to four. Give each group a bag filled with weird items. The groups have 15 minutes to prepare a skit using at least four of the items in the bag. Get ready for some fun as each group performs their very unusual and dramatic creations.

Pin the Udder on the Cow: Remember playing Pin the Tail on the Donkey at birthday parties? The game is still fun for older kids if you adapt it to fit your party. Are you having a swim party in combination with the sleepover? Then play Pin the Tail on the Mermaid. Draw a picture of a mermaid on a large piece of paper. Kids take turns getting blindfolded and taping fins to her body. Or outline a cow on a piece of cardboard. Give the blindfolded child a pink paper cut-out of a cow udder. It's definitely nine-year-old humor when the udder gets placed on the cow's head! Maybe your group would enjoy a lively game of Pin the Microphone on Hilary Duff.

Waking up

Mornings... ugh... is there actually anyone who enjoys them? You may have heard that your mum’s friend’s neighbour’s sister is said to be a morning person, but do you actually know any of these mythical beasts in the flesh?

If the sound of the alarm clock is akin to fingernails on the blackboard then follow these simple tips. You’ll find your day gets off to a much better start so you don’t spend most of the morning battling through a fog...

1. Wake up at the same time
You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to face the morning if your body automatically wakes itself up. If you’re alarm clock dependent then you need to make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Get into a routine of going to bed and waking up at the same time... your body will thank you for it! Also try setting your stereo as an alarm you can lull yourself awake with your favourite tunes.

2. Exercise
I know that when you’re trying to prise open your eyes exercise is probably the furthest thing from your mind, but if you get into the habit of exercising first thing you’ll be amazed at how alert you will feel, not just for the morning but the whole day. You don’t need to become a gym junkie either, drag your boy or flatmate out of bed and head out for a quick jog. If that’s too much for you then consider starting your day with some yoga or stretching moves on a mat in the lounge.

3. Shower
Well duh! Most of you probably already do this, but if you normally shower at night consider a switch to the am. That blast of water is sure to wake you up, but don’t up the temperature too high or it’ll put you back to sleep! 4. Breakfast
