| Cleopatra's Suicide by Snake a Myth? |
| Article |
 |
|
Popular lore holds that in Cleopatra's last moments, the distraught queen - who had just lost her kingdom and learned of her lover's demise - smuggled a poisonous snake into her locked chamber and died, along with two ladies-in-waiting, of a self-inflicted snake bite.
Such a scenario is next to impossible, according to Egyptologist Joyce Tyldesley, who shatters the "snakebite suicide" myth in her new book, Cleopatra: Last Queen of Egypt, just published in Europe and slated for an upcoming U.S. release.
"It seems to me that the snake theory is just too difficult to sustain, as it leaves too many loopholes," Tyldesley, a lecturer at the University of Manchester in England and museum fellow, told Discovery News.
She posed the following questions: Do we imagine one snake killed all three women, or were three snakes brought in? How did the snake(s) get into the room? Where did the snakes then go? Since not all snakes are poisonous, how did the women ensure their own deaths?

Sharm dive centre rescues corals |
| Article |
 |
|
Instructors and dive guides from Red Sea Diving College in Egypt's Sharm El Sheikh have successfully transported large sections of damaged corals to a new reef.
Together with marine biologists from the Ras Mohammed National Park, Red Sea Diving College staff was granted permission to remove corals from two wrecks, including the Million Hope and attach them to a series of artificial reefs. However, strong winds prevented the 16-strong diving team from removing corals from the Million Hope wreck during the first planned dive.
Under direction of marine park authorities, the divers changed course in a bid to save corals damaged by an illegal fishing vessel in a protected reef in Ras Mohammed National Park the previous week.
'Dr Mohammed Salem, our project partner and head of Ras Mohammed National Park had explained to us that large colonies of broken coral were strewn around the reef and were being destroyed by constant wave action,' said Red Sea Diving College spokesman Mark Fraenkel. 'We organised ourselves in to three teams. One to collect the coral, the second to transport it in crates back to the boat, and third, overseen by Dr Mohammed, to settle the coral into the seawater-filled crates once back on board. We took only the corals that were clearly begin swept about by the swell.

| Brits still in love with Egypt's El Gouna |
| Article |
 |
|
New figures just released have confirmed that El Gouna, the Red Sea’s premier leisure destination, remains a popular choice with travelling Brits. The statistics demonstrate that the UK is now resort’s fourth largest source market, with nearly 1 in 10 arrivals, guest nights and room nights all being attributable to UK visitors.
This is a slight change from 2006 when the UK held 3rd place for guest night production but the change is due to an increase in domestic tourism and Egypt now occupies this position.
Overall, the total number of guest nights increased by 17% compared to 2006, to reach a figure over 1.5million. Within this, the resort saw a 6% increase in the number of UK guest nights during 2007 but overall the UK’s percentage share of the market fell slightly by 0.95%. This was also a more general trend, demonstrating that El Gouna is increasingly developing an international community feel as it gains popularity and visitors from a wider number of source nations.
The relatively slower growth in the number of UK guest nights during 2007 compared to previous years is likely to be due largely to less seat capacity available on the London Gatwick – Hurghada route. In recent years, some tour operators have stopped operating flights on the route, while GB Airways also reduced its twice-weekly service to become just once a week during the winter season only. This means that all flights now arrive on the same day, restricting the amount of flexibility guests have when choosing to visit the destination.
Occupancy at the resort remained high, however, with the hotels reporting an average of 83%, representing a 10% increase from 2006. The most popular months to travel were March, April, August, September, October and November, demonstrating that the resort retains its status as a year-round destination.
