Easter Lamb Cake |
| Easter Recipes |
 |
|
Ingredients
• 2 1/4 cups cake flour
• 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 1/4 cups white sugar
• 1/2 cup butter
• 1 cup milk
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 4 egg whites
Directions
1. First, prepare your mold. Coat with vegetable oil, let sit for a few minutes then wipe clean with a paper towel. Then grease and flour your mold, making sure to get all the little areas.
2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Sift the cake flour, then sift again with the baking powder and salt; set aside.
3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk. Stir the batter until smooth after each addition. Add the vanilla.
4. In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Fold 1/3 of the egg whites into the batter to lighten it, then quickly fold in the remaining whites.
5. Fill the face side of the mold with batter. Move a wooden spoon through the batter GENTLY, to remove any air pockets. Make sure not to disturb the greased and floured surface of the mold. Put the lid on the mold, making sure it locks or ties together securely so that the steam and rising batter do not force the two sections apart.
6. Put the mold on a cookie sheet in a preheated oven for about 1 hour. Test for doneness by inserting a skewer or wooden toothpick through a steam vent. Put the cake, still in the mold, on a rack for about 15 minutes. CAREFULLY, remove the top of the mold. Before you separate the cake from the bottom let it cool for about 5 more minutes so that all the steam can escape and the cake can firm up some more. After removing the rest of the mold, let the cake cool on the rack completely. DO NOT sit the cake upright until completely cooled. Frost with Seven Minute Icing or any other white icing of your choice and decorate to look like a lamb.

Al Ahly Win Egyptian League Derby |
In what is considered the top game of the season in the Egyptian Premier League, the Cairo derby between Al Ahly and Al Zamalek ended in a 2-0 win for Al Ahly, as the Red Devils continued their domination in both the derby matches and the Egyptian league. |

 |

Ask anyone living in North Africa or the Middle East, even if they are not real soccer fanatics, about the biggest football match one can witness in that region of the world, and there’s a 90 percent chance they’ll reply without thinking, “Al-Ahly versus Al-Zamalek in the Egyptian league”.
Two of the most famous clubs in the Arab world, with a fan base rivaling clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid, the derby match between the two teams is one of those matches where its not just about the 3 points, but pride and bragging rights which could last a lifetime.
Heading into the 101st meeting between the two sides, it was a different atmosphere, not in terms of enthusiasm, but in terms of importance, as Al-Zamalek trailed leaders Ahly by a bumper 17 points. Nevertheless, fanatics made their way to the Military College Stadium as always with these derbies, with a full-capacity crowd filling in every nook and cranny of the stadium.
With the tension building up, both coaches announced their line-ups for the match just 20 minutes before kick-off. Al-Ahly’s Portuguese manager Manuel Jose, sporting his usual 3-4-3/3-5-2 formation, started the match with a line up containing all his major stars except suspended goalkeeper Essam El-Hadari, and one of Egypt’s finest players, Mohamed Abu Treika, who was out due to an injury.

| Egypt rising in popularity as sunny holiday for UK residents |
| Article |
 |
|
Egypt is rising in popularity as a destination for UK holiday-goers, according to Kuoni Travel, one of the UK’s leading UK long haul operators.
Rising popularity for the company’s Egypt holidays has prompted plans to strengthen the usability and customer experience of their site and expanding the use of travel videos across all key destinations.
Alicia Welsman, Senior Product Manager of Kuoni Travel, said: "As a destination, Egypt has an enormous amount to offer; it's relatively close to the UK, has reliably good weather and presents many cultural and historic attractions as well as fantastic diving and beaches".
Kuoni are planning to build on Egypt's popularity by adding new experiences and hotels to their Egypt Holidays range, including the Sofitel El Gerizah in Cairo and a range of new deluxe properties built by Sun International in Port Galib, Kazinform quotes e-Travel Blackboard.

It seems that the number 13 spell has affected this year's Aswan International Sculptures Symposium (AISS). While the administrative team of the AISS inspects the final touches of the night ceremony to mark the end of the 13th annual event, an unexpected, dusty wind suddenly blew all over Aswan and forced the cancellation of the minister of culture's tour of the new sculptures carved within the bed-rock of the open-air museum, and the location of the ceremony changed from the Nubia Museum amphitheatre to the Basma Hotel's festival hall.
Although the hall was too small to host such a great event and did not have enough space or a suitable stage for the performance, it introduced for the first time to Egyptian spectators a talented Sudanese singer, Asia. To the rhythm of Nubian music, Asia's beautiful voice filled the evening air while a dozen dancers wearing vivid costumes in all shades of red and yellow shook to the rhythm of the drums. Asia, with her curly red hair and white silk dress, swayed to the rhythm of the well-known Nubian songs.
Enchanted with the atmosphere and pleased with the result of the AISS 13th round, Culture Minister Farouk Hosni told he was very proud of the results achieved by the symposium. "It not only re-establishes the practice of stone sculpture in Egypt and contributes to its development worldwide, but also provides opportunities for sculptors to produce large works in granite, instilling in young Egyptian artists the drive to regenerate Aswan as the international arts centre it once was," he said. "I am very happy that the symposium has created a skillful generation of young Egyptian granite sculptors."
Hosni said that establishing the AISS was a dream conceived when he was Egypt's cultural attaché in Paris. "Now, after more than two decades, the AISS not only exists on Egypt's cultural calendar but has established itself as an important international event attracting leading sculptors and amateurs from many countries," he said.

The Great Omar |
Hollywood Legend and Egyptian film Icon to Star in Kamal Tabrizi's Saint Petersburg |
| Article |
 |
|
World-renowned Egyptian actor Omar Sharif will act in the Iranian film "Saint Petersburg", which is to be directed by Kamal Tabrizi. The latter directed Marmoulak aka The Lizard in 2004 which was Iran's highest all-time box-office earner until it was banned by the government for its blasphemous nature. A thief escapes from jail disguised as a holy man ( A Mullah), and takes on that role in a small border village while trying to figure out a way to flee the country. The film was a subtle stance against the religious establishment although more through a social criticism than a call for political reform or an end to the theocracy.
[...]
However the choice of having one of World Cinema Icons Omar Sharif is a great step forward if ever achieved to open the Iranian film industry to foreign talents and cooperation. It should be noted however that it is not a pioneering initiative in Iranian Cinema since Omar Sharif had already worked with Iranian co-productions during the Pahlavi era by joining an international cast on the set of Poppies are Also Flowers (1966) a film commissioned by UNESCO that was partly shot in Iran ( Shiraz, Isfahan, Tehran) and dealt with the fight against international drug traffic.

Edfu - Temple of Horus
The 2,000 year old Temple of Horus, almost perfectly preserved, creates an overwhelming impression. Built on the site of an earlier temple, it was dedicated to the sun god Horus, Hathor of Dendera and their son the youthful Harsomtus (Hersemtawi), "Uniter of the Two Lands". The history of its construction and a description of the whole structure are set forth in long inscriptions on the outside of the enclosure wall, particularly at the north end of the east and west sides.
The rear part of the complex, the temple proper, was begun in 237 B.C., in the reign of Ptolemy II Euergetes I and completed in 212 under his successor, Philopator. The decoration of the walls with reliefs and inscriptions, interrupted during the troubled reign of Epiphanes, was resumed by 176 by Philometor and finished in 147, during the reign of Euergetes II i.e. exactly 90 years after the laying of the foundation stone.

| Cardboard Tube Lamb |
Hard to believe this adorable lamb came from a bag of cotton balls and a toilet paper roll! He’s cute and fluffy, so make one of your very own.

 |
Cardboard Tube Lamb |
What you will need:
• Cardboard tube
• Cotton balls
• Black felt
• 1 medium black pom pom
• 2 black chenille stems
• 2 pieces of scrap paper (8.5 x 11)
• White craft glue
• Scissors
• 2 wiggle eyes
• Purple felt
How to make it:
1. Wrap chenille stems around the cardboard tube and twist in place, one at each end. These will be your lamb’s legs.
2. Coat the entire cardboard tube with dots of white glue. Cover with cotton balls.
3. Wad up one of the pieces of scrap paper and insert it inside the tube. Wad up the second paper and leave about an inch or so sticking out one end for the head. Inserting this paper gives you something to put glue on.
4. Add glue to the end of the cardboard tube where the tail would be. You should have enough paper in the tube that you can now apply glue to this end and cover it with cotton balls.
5. Cut a square from black felt (about 4” x 4”) and wrap it around the paper wad sticking out of the cardboard tube. This is the head. Tuck in the ends of the felt and glue in place. Glue more cotton balls around the neck.
6. Cut two triangles from black felt and glue to the top of the head for the ears.
7. Glue two wiggle eyes onto the face.
8. Glue black pom pom to the rear end for the tail.
9. Cut a simple bow tie from purple felt and glue to the front of the lamb under chin area.
10. Trim the ends of the chenille stems if needed to help your lamb balance.

Onions |
What would a kitchen be without the distinctively pungent smell and taste of onions filling out the flavors of almost every type of cuisine imaginable? Fortunately, yellow storage onions are available throughout the year but sweet varieties have a much more limited growing season and are available only a few months out of the year.
The word onion comes from the Latin word unio for "single," or "one," because the onion plant produces a single bulb, unlike its cousin, the garlic, that produces many small bulbs. The name also describes the union (also from unio) of the many separate, concentrically arranged layers of the onion.
Health Benefits
Onions, like garlic, are members of the Allium family, and both are rich in powerful sulfur-containing compounds that are responsible for their pungent odors and for many of their health-promoting effects. Onions contain allyl propyl disulphide, while garlic is rich in allicin, diallyl disulphide, diallyl trisulfide and others. In addition, onions are very rich in chromium, a trace mineral that helps cells respond to insulin, plus vitamin C, and numerous flavonoids, most notably, quercitin.
