Egypt's Al-Ahly to investigate goalie al-Hadary's disputed transfer to Swiss club |
| Sport news |
 |
|
Egyptian soccer club Al-Ahly will open an investigation into its goalkeeper Essam al-Hadary on his disputed transfer to the Swiss FC Sion club, local sports website Filgoal.com reported on Sunday.
Al-Hadary, who has already signed a three-year deal with FC Sion without approval of Al-Ahly with which he still has a contract until 2010, is likely to be imposed a heavy sanction, said the report.
After returning from Switzerland on Friday, the 35-year-old Egyptian goalie has expressed his regrets and promised to accept any decision made by Al-Ahly on his controversial move to the FC Sion club.
"I return to Al-Ahly because I realized that I shouldn't have done that," said Al-Hadaryi on Saturday in an Egyptian TV program, adding "I feel sorry and I'm ready to accept any decision by the club (Al-Ahly)."
Al-Hadary's move to the Swiss FC Sion club has brought widespread criticism and dispute in Egypt.
On Friday, al-Hadary returned home from Switzerland after failing to transfer to the Swiss club.
According to earlier report, the world soccer governing body FIFA has been asked to rule on the case of Al-Hadary's transfer.
Al-Hadary, dubbed by the Egyptian fans as the "High Dam", was awarded the best goalkeeper of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) in February when Egypt successfully defended its ACN title.

Chocolate Covered Easter Eggs |
| Easter Recipes |
 |
|
Ingredients
• 1/2 cup butter, softened
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
• 2 1/2 pounds confectioners' sugar
• 1 cup creamy peanut butter (optional)
• 1 cup flaked coconut (optional)
• 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (optional)
• 2 cups semisweet chocolate pieces
• 2 tablespoons shortening or vegetable oil (optional)
Directions
1. In a large bowl, mix together the butter, vanilla, and cream cheese. Stir in confectioners' sugar to make a workable dough. For best results, use your hands for mixing.
2. Divide the dough into four parts. Leave one of the parts plain. To the second part, mix in peanut butter. Mix coconut into the third part, and cocoa powder into the last part. Roll each type of dough into egg shapes, and place on a waxed paper lined cookie sheet. Refrigerate until hard, at least an hour.
3. Melt chocolate chips in a heat-proof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir occasionally until smooth. If the chocolate seems too thick for coating, stir in some of the shortening or oil until it thins. Dip the chilled candy eggs in chocolate, and return to the waxed paper lined sheet to set. Refrigerate for 1/2 hour to harden.

Tackling the Rubbish |
Red Sea Environment |
| News |
 |
|
We all know that the amount of rubbish in the Red Sea region is unsightly, unhealthy and unacceptable; but things are being done to help tackle the problem…
One such initiative is the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), now open in Marsa Alam. The Facility is part of HEPCA’s Solid Waste Management Strategy for the Red Sea, undertaken in cooperation with USAID, the EEAA, the National Parks of Egypt and the Association for the Protection of the Environment, and with private donations.
Separated waste items are collected at source and transported in our stunning new trucks to the Facility. Organic waste is passed on to the local community for animal feed. Non-organic waste is sorted, processed and traded through to recycling firms where possible, or otherwise placed into a managed dumpsite for non-recyclables.
Contracts with hotels, dive centres and other tourism establishments in the Marsa Alam region are currently being concluded. The Solid Waste Management Strategy not only focuses on the collection and recycling of waste, but also provides valuable employment opportunities to the local community. A second MRF is due to open in the Hurghada area later this year.

| KSA, Egypt among the leading destinations in tourism growth |
| Article |
 |
|
UNWTO World Tourism Barometer figures indicate that the Middle East clocked up 46 million international tourist arrivals in 2007, and that the region continues to be one of the tourism success stories of the decade so far, reported Travel and Tourism News.
“The region is emerging as a strong destination with visitor numbers climbing much faster than the world total, with Saudi Arabia and Egypt among the leading destinations in growth in 2007,” says the UNWTO report. Worldwide there were 898 million international tourism arrivals in 2007, a six percent increase over 2006.
“Economic and tourism growth are driven by emerging markets and developing economies. While mature markets remain the leading destinations in the world, the faster growth rate of new markets confirms UNWTO’s main message of tourism’s potential for the developing world,” said UNWTO’s Secretary General Francesco Frangialli.
Of the additional 52 million worldwide arrivals, Europe received some 19 million and Asia and the Pacific 17 million. The Americas was up by around six million, Africa by three million and the Middle East by five million.

Tamer Hosni’s house in flames |
| News |
 |
|
Egyptian singer Tamer Hosni’s villa was severely damaged as a result of a major fire. A large portion of the furniture was ruined along with other financial losses, but to the singer’s luck no one was injured.
Tamer stated once he heard of the news that he thanks God that no one was home and the damages were done to material things that can be easily replaced.
Rumors were circulating that the incident may not have been an accident and may in fact be the work of a perpetrator who has personal issues with Tamer. The singer stated that he does not accuse anyone of doing such a thing and truly thinks it was an accident.
Tamer added that it was revealed that the accident was caused by a loose electric wire. He stated that he is not upset over any of the losses that occurred and the first question he made when he was notified of the accident was making sure that no one had been injured.
When the accident occurred, Tamer was busy filming the scenes of his upcoming film “Captain Hima”.

| Golf in Egypt: Egyptian working women … in golf? |
| Article |
 |
|
Some have written about the need for Egyptians to work in the golf industry. Until now, most Egyptians working in the industry have been men who started out at a young age as caddies in one of the old clubs — Gezirah Sporting, Mena House or Alexandria Sporting. These men have become golf teachers; very few make a good living at it.
But the top teaching pros in Egypt, the head greenskeepers (the professional person in charge of keeping the course in good condition), and nearly all of the club managers are from abroad. All are men. They often have university degrees, and have passed the rigorous requirements to join the professional golf associations in the countries where they come from. Most are excellent players, having played — or dreamed of playing —on the professional tours. They all have outstanding English-language skills, even if they are not native speakers.
[...]
One of the most intriguing stories of an Egyptian looking to golf as a lifelong occupation is about a young woman from Alexandria — Naela El Attar — who started playing golf at a very young age and is now seeking to make it a career. When we asked Naela to tell us the story of how she, at five years old, started to play golf, she nonchalantly answered, “Well, I used to play tennis.” At five? Yes, at five.
But a relative drew her into the game of golf and it has been her passion ever since. “Every summer it was the beach and golf,” Naela says of growing up in Alexandria.

| Egyptian nine-year-old may be admitted to university |
| Article |
 |
|
A nine-year-old Egyptian boy, dubbed "Mr Calculator" by his family and friends for his amazing ability with calculations, may be admitted to Cairo University, local media said.
This week Mahmoud Wael is meeting with the Egyptian education minister who will make a decision on whether to admit him to the university, the Al-Ahram daily said.
Mahmoud, who was acknowledged a wunderkind by teachers and officials at the age of four, can work out the most complicated calculations in a matter of seconds.
The boy learnt the multiplication table orally before he could read. He learnt English in three months, and now has advanced French and German.
Currently, Mahmoud's IQ is 155, 13 points higher than the average.
Mr Calculator could soon even enter the famed high-IQ group, Triple Nine Society, which has over 800 members from 30 countries with IQs in the top 99.9% of the world's population.
Mahmoud earlier was offered a grant to study at a Canadian university if he took up Canadian citizenship. However, the boy and his parents refused the offer.
The boy's father was the first person to realize his son was a genius when he was testing his eldest daughter's knowledge of mathematics.
When he asked her what seven times seven was, the girl gave the wrong answer. "So I chipped in and said 49. My dad was astonished and asked me how did I know the correct answer," Al-Ahram cited Mahmoud as saying.

Dahshur - Bent Pyramid
Farther south of the White Pyramid is the imposing and enigmatic Bent Pyramid. Like the Red Pyramid, this was built in the reign of Sneferu, probably before that pyramid, and apparently planned as a normal pyramid with straight sides and with the usual valley temple, causeway, subsidiary pyramid and enclosure wall. It has a base measurement of 619ft/188.56m and a height of 319ft/97.26m.
The excellently preserved casing, constructed of slabs of Tura limestone slightly inclined downwards, gives a good idea of the original external appearance of other pyramids. The reason for the change of angle half way up the pyramid, from 54° 31 in the lower part to 43° 21, is unknown. Two theories have been put forward: either some unforeseen event may have made it necessary to complete the pyramid quickly, or as plaster filled cracks in the interior and traces of timber supports suggests there were fears for the stability of the pyramid during its construction and the upper part was given a less steep angle to reduce the weight of stone.
