Sports: Egypt retain African Nations Cup

Mohamed Aboutraika's 77th minute goal enabled Egypt to retain the African Nations Cup with a 1-0 victory over Cameroon in the final in Accra on Sunday

News

Mohamed Abotraika

It was a record sixth title triumph for Egypt, who punished some uncertain defending by Rigobert Song to score the winner.

As Song dithered trying to clear, the persistent Mohamed Zidan gained possession and steered the ball across the goalmouth to Aboutraika, who slid his shot past Carlos Kameni.

Egypt, the first side to win back-to-back titles twice, were rarely troubled by Cameroon, the team they beat 4-2 in their opening group match in Ghana.

Matchwinner Aboutraika said: "Now we have to make sure that we keep this form going into the World Cup qualifiers.

"It's one of the greatest days of my life. It's up there with winning the African Champions League."

Abandoned Anchor Cut Gulf Internet Cable

Ship Anchor
Ship Anchor

An abandoned anchor was responsible for cutting one of the undersea Internet cables severed last week, causing disruptions across the Middle East and parts of Asia, the cable's owner said Friday.

A FLAG Telecom repair crew discovered the anchor near where the fiber-optic cable was severed Feb. 1 in the Persian Gulf, 35 miles north of Dubai, between the Emirates and Oman.

Weighing more than 5.5 tons, the anchor has been pulled to the surface. The company did not immediately explain whether the anchor moved and snapped the cable or whether the cable itself was drifting when it was sliced.

It remains unclear exactly how any of the cuts occurred.

It also was unclear whether FLAG knew what vessel the anchor belonged to. Rough weather was reported nearby at the time of the cut, but conditions have improved since.

Tamer Hosni

Hosni will grace the soft drink giant's advertising and print campaigns as well as concerts throughout the region following a two-year contract.

Born in Cairo, Hosni completed his bachelor's degree in media from the 6th October University. His first album released in 2006 was met with an exponential response throughout the region. Some of his hits include ‘Awsiflak', ‘Inta Hayaty' and ‘Hub'. His genre is primarily romantic.

Rafik El Toukhi, President - Middle East Business Unit for Coca-Cola Middle East said: "Following the remarkably successful 4 years with the Lebanese super star and singing diva Nancy Ajram representing us, we realized the importance and impact of dynamic brand ambassadors in the region.

Based on our extensive market research on popularity, personality and suitability for the Coke Side of Life, our choice naturally fell on Tamer Hosni. In his extensive emotional range of music, his love for life and his dedication to spreading the message through music, we found the perfect fit in Egypt's most popular superstar.

HEPCA warning over Thistlegorm mooring lines

Red Sea Environment

Thistlegorm
Thistlegorm

Dive operators in the Egyptian Red Sea have been warned to comply with new mooring regulations on the wreck of the Thistlegorm or face prosecution.

The Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA), which installed the mooring lines in December to protect the wreck, issued a statement to the dive community after 16 of the 32 lines were cut. However, following the installation of the lines, HEPCA has received a series of complaints from dive operators, many of whom say the system is unworkable.

Amr Ali, HEPCA's chairman, told DIVE: 'HEPCA has heard two kinds of complaints: firstly, that the mooring lines are too long, which means they are drifting in the current and crossing the wreck and shredding; and secondly, that the lines are too short, which means that dive guides are considering that they are in danger when repeatedly tying ropes at depth. It seems we are damned if we do, and damned if we don't.'

Ali added that HEPCA divers plan to install shorter lines to prevent them being dragged across the wreck. But he insisted that the situation was caused by 'lack of experience' among dive guides.

Valentines Couple
Valentine's couple

Many may argue that Valentine’s Day is too cliché and commercial, but don’t let them get you down. The day is a great excuse to celebrate love, and it’s up to you to get creative and put together something exciting and unique. Here are some ideas.

Dressing up, staying in. Have you ever tried to go out to dinner on Valentine’s Day? What a nightmare. All the restaurants are fully booked, the traffic jams are endless and parking is impossible. Instead why not arrange a night in of dinner and slow dancing.

Put on your dressiest outfit and style your hair as if you’re going to a celebrity ball. Don’t forget the candlelight and music — Sinatra would be a good choice. And keep the food simple. Order some oysters — Gourmet Egypt has some good quality Clevedon Coast Oysters and you can order it right to your door — and pop some Champaign.

Of course, send the kids to their grandparents for the night. We know you love them too but this is a day dedicated to heighten your romance.

Ptolemaic Cat
Ptolemaic Cat

An issue we saw gain momentum in 2007 has swung back on the agenda once again almost as the new year came in. This is the issue of the repatriation or return of Egypt’s cultural heritage from the museum stores of Europe and the Americas.

In the last few weeks, the University Museum at Southern Illinois University in the United States agreed to return a statue of a cat dating from the Ptolemaic era that had been illegally smuggled out of the country.

In an ironic twist to the story the location of the cat only came about because the museum’s current director Dona Bachman, sent a letter to the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) asking for approval to exhibit the artefact as part of the museum’s collection, and requesting more details about the object and the archaeological site where it was originally found. It was then that Dr Zahi Hawass, Director General of the SCA, spotted that the cat was on a list of items stolen from Egypt.

Rare U.S. Coin Found in Egypt

Golden Coin
Golden coin

A rare U.S. double eagle gold coin that could be worth up to $15 million has been found by an Egyptian couple as they cleaned out their flat, the Qatar Ar-Raya newspaper said on Monday.

The precious piece of gold was discovered in an old box that had once belonged to Mohammed Ismail's grandfather while he and his wife, Fatima, were throwing old clothes and broken furniture out of a closet.

Mohammed subsequently sent the coin to experts, hoping that he would get a few dollars for it. However, the tailor was shocked when the experts told him that his grandfather had left him a unique coin of historical value.

Double eagle coins were first minted in 1850 and were used to settle accounts between banks and other financial institutions.

Specialists believe that the double eagle found in Egypt could be part of Theodore Roosevelt's 1933 collection of coins redesigned by famed American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and given to King Farouk of Egypt as a present.

Bahriya Oasis
The Bahriya Oasis

The Bahriya Oasis

The Bahirya (Northern) Oasis, also known as Wahet el-Bahnasa, the Oasis of Bahnasa, and to the ancients as the Little Oasis (Oasis Parva: in contrast to the Kharga Oasis) lies in latitude 28° 23 north and longitude 28° 19 east in a depression in the Western (Libyan) Desert, here hilly and very picturesque.

The oasis, 11mi/18km long by 5.5mi/9km across, has a population of some 6,000, who live by the cultivation and export of high quality dates, olives, citrus fruits and onions and by the rearing of poultry (mainly turkeys). It is planned to achieve a considerable increase in agricultural output by the drilling of wells. A recent development is the open cast mining of iron ore at El Gedida, some 25mi/40km northeast of the oasis.

thyme

Thyme

A delicate looking herb with a penetrating fragrance, thyme is a wonderful addition to bean, egg and vegetable dishes. Both fresh and dried thyme is available in your local supermarket throughout the year.

Thyme leaves are curled, elliptically shaped and very small, measuring about one-eighth of an inch long and one-sixteenth of an inch wide. The upper leaf is green-grey in color on top, while the underside is a whitish color. Along with fresh sprigs of parsley and bay leaves, thyme is included in the French combination of herbs called bouquet garni used to season stock, stews and soups.

Health Benefits

Thyme has a long history of use in natural medicine in connection with chest and respiratory problems including coughs, bronchitis, and chest congestion. Only recently, however, have researchers pinpointed some of the components in thyme that bring about its healing effects. The volatile oil components of thyme are now known to include carvacolo, borneol, geraniol, but most importantly, thymol.
