Winter sun, anyone? |
Spend an unforgettably sunny Winter vacation in Egypt |
| Article |
 |
|
Who doesn’t long for an intense dose of heat and sunshine at this time of year? To satisfy those cravings, we have come up with this holiday spot, where the weather in February is near perfect and there is little likelihood of rain.
Nothing can compare with learning about the bewitching world of hieroglyphics and jackal-headed gods among the tombs and desert sands of Egypt itself.
Luxor, with winter temperatures in the mid-20s, is slightly warmer than Cairo and the best base for exploring the Valleys of the Kings and Queens and the great temple at Karnak, or for joining a cruise down the Nile to Aswan and Abu Simbel.
Spend a few days on the beach at a Red Sea resort such as Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada, where there is superb snorkeling and diving - although it can be windy occasionally.

A new media war against Haifa Wahbi |
The sultry Lebanese singer Haifa Wahbi is once again under attack by the media |
News
|
 |
|
The Egyptian variety channel managed by Shafki Al Mineri is facing criticism by Egyptian newspapers for choosing Haifa to host a live concert broadcast by the channel on New Years.
Several papers published articles asserting that an Egyptian singer should have been chosen instead of the “erotic" Lebanese star. Although before the New Year many of the same publications lauded the decision.
Tickets were sold out for Haifa’s concert at one of Cairo’s five stars hotels.
According to the London daily Elaph, Haifa appeared on the cover of a number of Egyptian magazines this holiday season.
The singer will play the leading role in an Egyptian film produced by Muhammad Al Sakbi, her first film.
Directors are expecting Haifa to be a success, already competing for her to take part in their films.

No Mido for Egypt |
Not a bad 2007 sports year for Egypt, and tough challenges lies ahead |
| Sport News |
 |
|
Egypt have named a balanced squad for the Africa Cup of Nations with the only absentee being Ahmed Hossam Hussein, commonly known as Mido.
The Middlesbrough striker was given until the last minute to recover from a recent injury, but failed to do so and missed out on appearing in the 23-man list that has more than half of their players coming from the local league.
The Pharaohs are the defending champions and chasing their sixth title after winning the tournament when they hosted it two years ago.
Egypt squad
Goalkeepers: Essam al-Hadary (Al-Ahly), Mohamed Moncef (Zamalek), Mohamed Sobhi (Ismailia)
Defenders: Mahmoud Fathallah and Tarek al-Sayed (Zamalek), Sayed Moawad and Hani Saied (Ismailia), Shady Mohamed and Ahmed Fathi (Ahly), Wael Gomaa (Al-Siliya/QAT), Ibrahim Saied (Ankaragucu/TUR), Ahmed al-Muhammadi (ENPPI)
Midfielders: Omar Gamal and Hosni Abd Rabou (Ismailia), Mohamed Aboutraika (Ahly), Ahmed Hassan (Anderlecht/BEL), Hassan Mostafa (Al-Wehda/KSA), Mohamed Shawky (Middlesbrough/ENG), Ahmed Shaaban (Petrojet)
Strikers: Mohamed Fadl (Ismailia), Emad Moteab (Ahly), Amr Zaki (Zamalek), Mohamed Zidan (Hamburg/GER)

Communicating in Egypt |
| Article |
 |
|
Ancient Egypt was the centre of gravity for five thousand years - and many scholars, writers and other admirers, still think it is today. Even in this post-9/11 world in which we live, Egypt’s deeply rooted instincts for harmony remain.
“Please... this is for you,” came the voice of a food vendor deep in the Islamic marketplace of Cairo as he offered me a piping hot wedge of sweet potato. Hesitating at the gesture, I touched my pocket to see if I had a little baksheesh (cash) for this unexpected snack, but “No, no,” he insisted. “Please...it’s for you... you are a guest in my country.”
Egyptology continues to fascinate enquiring minds. Scholars confirm that the extraordinary success of this ancient society was woven by this single thread: a curious, dedicated and naturally enterprising citizenry who worked together toward common goals. For 3,000 years, the pharaohs ruled this land along the Nile with progress and prosperity.
They commissioned the Pyramids, built elaborate underground tombs, and erected colossal temples to the gods-much of which can be seen and touched today.

| Does Dahab offer much beyond diving? |
The Sunday Times opens its travel clinic on a daily basis to answer your holiday queries. Today: what to do on a Red Sea holiday |
| Article |
 |
|
We are going to chill out in Dahab on the Red Sea for two weeks. Whilst there, we are probably happy to do very little, but is there anything that you would recommend to do away from the beach, just in case? Dave Taylor, London
Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: Dahab has a delightful ability to lure you into a terrifically enjoyable torpor, so don’t be too surprised if the beach and the bars are enough. That said; it would be a shame to go all that way and return without seeing something more of the local landscape, and in particular, experiencing some Bedouin culture.
You can’t miss the travel agencies that offer trips into the desert, as they are all over central Dahab. Most hotels and the dive centres can take bookings too. Expect to pay from about £5-10 for two of you sharing transport on a trip to the mountains or along the coast to the famous Blue Hole dive spot, or from £10-15pp for an evening trip to a Bedouin village and dinner.

SCUBA Travel today releases its list of the best selling books and DVDs bought by SCUBA divers in 2007 |
| News |
 |
|
For the fourth consecutive year, The Dive Atlas of the World retains its top spot in the SCUBA Travel (scubatravel.co.uk) list of bestselling diving books and DVDs. A surprise entry at number three is a guide to the Italian island of Sardinia - a very popular diving destination last year. Another new entry is Shipwrecks from the Egyptian Red Sea, by Ned Middleton. Perhaps the best performer though is the Blue Planet DVD. This has not been out of the top ten since the list began in 2001.
Here are the top ten: figures in brackets show the previous year's position.
1. Dive Atlas of the World: An Illustrated Reference to the Best Sites by Jack Jackson - 300 pages detailing some of the world's best dive sites
2. Dive: The Ultimate Guide To 60 Of The Worlds Top Dive Locations by Monty Halls, Describes 60 of the world's best diving areas, and highlights specific dives not to be missed whilst you are there
3. Sardinia (Lonely Planet Regional Guides) by Paula Hardy - Complete, practical regional guide for independent travellers. Includes dedicated activities chapter including the best dive spots
4. Neutral Buoyancy: Adventures in a Liquid World, by Tim Ecott - Tales of the characters and episodes in the history of diving: the sponge divers, the second world war saboteurs, the free divers, etc.

| Egypt's new golden age of television |
Satellite TV has created something of a media revolution in Egypt. With some help from the blogosphere, the ordinary citizens and their concerns have suddenly become a market. |
| News |
 |
|
In 2007, the number of free Egyptian satellite channels reached a total of six: al-Mehwar, Dream1, Dream2, OTV, As-Saa, and Modern, all owned by private businessmen.
With the birth of so many private satellite channels, talk shows have returned with a vengeance, bringing back the golden age of television to Egypt. What's more, the talk shows have managed to grab the attention of the average Egyptian citizen, who is not interested in the independent press despite its recent success.
It all started with the regime establishing a free media zone, Media Production City, in January 2000, and the investors’ will to pour EGP250 million ($46 million) into the launch of Egypt's first private satellite channel, Al-Mehwar (The Axis), in 2001.
Among the initial investors was Ahmad Bahjat, who left the channel a year later to set up two new channels, Dream 1 and Dream 2, with a capital of EGP40 million ($7.3 million).

| Wet and wild in Egypt |
We tend to think of Egypt as dry and dusty desert sands and pyramids. But you can get very wet in no time at all with a watersports holiday on the Red Sea coast, as ADAM ASPINALL discovered... |
| Article |
 |
|
Let me let you in on a little secret – I hate the ocean.
Especially being immersed in it. So what on earth was I doing, risking life and limb in open water? Not to mention sailing a catamaran, scuba-diving and wake-
boarding.
Watersports were never something I’d considered – I’m inactive for most of my working day, and technically dormant during winter.
But after a couple of days in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, I was hooked.
A Neilson Active Holiday weekend somehow turned me into Sinbad the sailor.
On a visit to the sun-kissed coastal town of Dahab, I was given the opportunity to try my hand on the water.
And I never looked back.
I was staying at the three-star Coralia Club resort, set in a 48-acre oasis of green gardens, with spectacular views of the blood-red Sinai mountains.
Overlooking a sheltered lagoon, and boasting 650 metres of private beach, the Coralia Club is the perfect place for a landlubber about to lose his land.
But the Neilson motto is ‘relax as hard as you like’ so there’s little pressure to jump in the Red Sea and sail over the horizon straight away.

The ruins of Abu Mena, the City of St Menas, the greatest Christian place of pilgrimage in the East during the early medieval period and the largest Coptic town so far known, lies in the Mareotic Desert some 50mi/80km southwest of Alexandria, half way to the Wadi Natrun.
This extensive site, known to the bedouin as Karm Abu Mina, the "Vineyard of St Menas", aroused wide international interest when it was discovered in 1905 by a German archeologist, Carl Maria Kaufmann, and since then has been extensively excavated and studied, with long interruptions, particularly during the two world wars. Most of the finds from the site are displayed in the Coptic Museum in Cairo.

Sesame Seeds |
Sesame seeds add a nutty taste and a delicate, almost invisible, crunch to many Asian dishes. They are also the main ingredients in tahini (sesame seed paste) and the wonderful Middle Eastern sweet call halvah. They are available throughout the year.
Sesame seeds may be the oldest condiment known to man dating back to as early as 1600 BC. They are highly valued for their oil which is exceptionally resistant to rancidity. "Open sesame," the famous phrase from the Arabian Nights, reflects the distinguishing feature of the sesame seed pod, which bursts open when it reaches maturity. The scientific name for sesame seeds is Sesamun indicum.
Health Benefits
Not only are sesame seeds a very good source of manganese and copper, but they are also a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, vitamin B1, zinc and dietary fiber.
