Months after mummy claim, DNA science still lags |
| News |
 |
|
Months after Egypt boldly announced that archeologists had identified a mummy as the most powerful queen of her time, scientists in a museum basement are still analyzing DNA from the bald, 3,500-year-old corpse to try to back up the claim aired on TV.
Progress is slow. So far, results indicate the linen-wrapped mummy is most likely, but not conclusively, the female pharaoh Queen Hatshepsut, who ruled for 20 years in the 15th century BC.
Running its own ancient-DNA lab is a major step forward for Egypt, which for decades has seen foreigners take most of the credit for major discoveries in the country.

| Extreme New Year's Resolution |
Toronto couple cycling from Cairo to Cape Town |
| Article |
 |
|
Debra and Dave Bouskill made a New Year's resolution last year - to race in the 2008, 120-day Tour d'Afrique. The 12,000 km race, which starts Jan 12, will challenge cyclists with extreme terrain, including the crocodile-inhabited shores of the Nile River, the sands of the Sahara desert, the elephant highway in Botswana and the mountains of Kenya. In the process, the couple will raise money to support development projects in the countries they travel through.
"We are adventure travelers who want to push ourselves to the limit, both physically and mentally, while experiencing the great cultures of the world," said Deb Bouskill. "We also like to share our experiences with others."
Throughout the Tour D'Afrique, Deb and Dave will document their grueling journey using video and photography. They will regularly update their website,
www.theplanetd.com. Supporters of their trip are asked to donate to Plan Canada, an international development agency that works to improve the lives of millions of children and their families in 49 countries around the world. On rest days, the Bouskills will visit various Plan projects along the
route.
To prepare for this adventure, Deb and Dave's year-long training regime included 240 km rides on weekends and daily 2-hour spinning workouts. "We've done more than 36,500 sit-ups this year," said Dave Bouskill. "Even packing for the race is a challenge since all our gear must fit into a pouch the size of a recycling blue box."
Deb and Dave's post-race celebration will include a few days of R&R,
followed by a climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

| Surprise Finds at Egypt Temple "Change Everything" |
A series of surprising discoveries has been made at the foot of Egypt's famous Temple of Amun at Karnak, archaeologists say |
| News |
 |
|
The new finds include ancient ceremonial baths, a pharaoh's private entry ramp, and the remains of a massive wall built some 3,000 years ago to reinforce what was then the bank of the Nile River.
A host of other artifacts, including hundreds of bronze coins, has also been found. Together the discoveries are causing experts to reconsider the history of the largest religious complex from ancient Egyptian times.
Archaeologists are particularly intrigued by the discovery of the embankment wall, which they say is the first evidence that the Nile once ran alongside the temple.
The elaborate shrine to the god Amun-Re covers about 200 acres (81 hectares) near the present-day city of Luxor and sits 650 feet (200 meters) from where the river runs today.

| Red Sea Beaches |
 |
|
For the growing number of those who choose to spend their Red Sea holidays in small downtown hotels or in rented flats or houses which most likely don't have direct access to a beach, there are a number of nice public beaches open all year round. Each week we will present u one of the most popular ones.
Zeytuna Beach
Zeytuna beach isn't a huge beach with a lot of frills. It is just a nice small beach where you can go and relax. It is on an island so you have to take the water taxi from the Sultan Bey Hotel downtown, or walk across the footbridge by the Hill hotel.
The beach is nice and sandy and there are plenty of beach chairs with umbrellas that will give you shade and privacy. There is a great volleyball court with an omnipresent camel next to it. You can rent the camel for a negotiatable price if you want, 15 Pounds for a half an hour is fair. There are also a few horses you can rent if you want.
The bar features a good selection of cocktails and has standard beach food, sandwiches and pizza. There are also a few shops where you can buy cheesy tourist fodder or get a chic henna tattoo.
The water at Zeytuna is lovely, crystal clear and a beautiful blue/green. There is a dock that extends way out into the water, and for good reason. About 10 feet out it is deep enough to swim, but past that it is shallow and rocky, so you have to go to the end of the dock if you want to do more than just float in the water. At the end of the dock is a nice diving platform too.
Zeytuna Beach is also the home to a number of nice late night beach parties with authentic Turkish food, a DJ and a bonfire, definitely worth checking out.

| Sweater Mittens |
These mittens -- made from old sweaters that have been "felted" (shrunken into a dense, nonraveling material) -- are soft, toasty and very colorful
|
| parents & kids |
 |
|
 |
Sweater Mittens |
What you will need:
• Old wool sweater (use only 100 % wool)
• Paper and pencil
• Pins and scissors
• Yarn
• Tapestry or yarn needle
How to make it:
1. Wash the sweater in the hot cycle of your washer three or four times with regular detergent. Then pop the sweater into the drier for about 45 minutes, or until it shrinks and becomes feltlike in texture. Certain sweaters shrink better than others, and the drying time will vary depending on the sweater's thickness.
2. To make a mitten template, trace around one of your (or your child's) mittens, leaving an extra inch or so around the edge for sewing. Pin the template onto the felted fabric, then cut out four matching mitten shapes.
3. Pin two of the mitten sides together. Using a contrasting color of yarn, stitch around the edges (a blanket stitch, as used here, looks especially nice).

Cinnamon |
Although available throughout the year, the fragrant, sweet and warm taste of cinnamon is a perfect spice to use during the winter months.
Cinnamon has a long history both as a spice and as a medicine. It is the brown bark of the cinnamon tree, which is available in its dried tubular form known as a quill or as ground powder. The two varieties of cinnamon, Chinese and Ceylon, have similar flavor, however the cinnamon from Ceylon is slightly sweeter, more refined and more difficult to find in local markets.
Health Benefits
Cinnamon's unique healing abilities come from three basic types of components in the essential oils found in its bark. These oils contain active components called cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, and cinnamyl alcohol, plus a wide range of other volatile substances.
