Happy Eid
Happy Eid!

Eid al-Adha is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide as a commemoration of Ibrahim's (Abraham's) willingness to sacrifice his son Ismael for Allah. It is one of two Eid festivals that Muslims celebrate. Like Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha begins with a short prayer followed by a sermon. It is also called the bigger Eid because it lasts a day longer than Eid al-Fitr.

Eid al-Adha is four days long and starts on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja of the lunar Islamic calendar. This is the day after the pilgrims in Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide, descend from Mount Arafat. It happens to be approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan.

Spot-Redsea wishes all our clients, faithful readers all their families a happy Eid!

Christmas Recipe: Glow Wine

Christmas Recipes

Glow Wine
Glow Wine

Flaming desserts make a dramatic nameday treat for children and adults! For adults whose nameday saint has fire as one of his/her symbols, this can be a wonderful part of the celebration.

Ingredients

• red table wine, such as claret
• 1/4 cup sugar
• 8 cloves
• 1 stick cinnamon
• lemon peel, sliced thin and cut into slivers
• orange slices
• sugar cubes
• brandy
• heavy saucepan
• heated mugs

Pour a "fifth" of red table wine, such as claret, into a heavy saucepan, along with 1/4 cup of sugar, 8 cloves, 1 stick of cinnamon, and the peel of a lemon sliced thin and cut into slivers. Cover, and bring almost, but not quite, to a boil.

At serving time, ladle the hot glow wine into heated mugs and garnish each with a slice of orange. On the rim of the mug rest a teaspoon which has been warmed in hot liquid; into it place a lump of sugar and pour over the sugar a little brandy which has been warmed. This lump of sugar is set afire on each mug. Dramatically the glowing wine is brought to the table to honor the nameday person.

Various reports of sightings have been heard. “Mr. C” has been seen at the German School Bazaar as well as The French School party. Many gifts have been given already and it’s not even Christmas!

New modes of transport for Santa here in Egypt, since we don’t have snow. I guess his camel was sick :)

Thistlegorm
Thistlegorm

The wreck of the SS Thistlegorm will be open again for diving from tomorrow, Sunday 16th December 2007.
Following an intense operation, conser- vation work to preserve this legendary wreck has been extremely successful and finished on schedule.
We encourage all diving boats and operators to support the scheme and make use of the new mooring system.

In addition to the moorings, a quantity of holes have been drilled in the wreck as air-escape outlets. Further holes will be drilled at a later date but will not require further closure of the site.
HEPCA would like to thank all those individuals and organizations who gave their valuable cooperation and support and were instrumental in making this pivotal event happen. Special thanks to all those diving operators and guests for their understanding in being unable to dive the SS Thistlegorm during the period of this urgent conservation work.

The conservation work on the SS Thistlegorm will now be followed by a similar project on the Rosalie Moller and other wrecks under threat as part of the HEPCA ‘Saving the Red Sea Wrecks’ Campaign.

Going the extra Nile for charity

A disabled woman spent her 45th birthday cycling 400 kilometres across Egypt raising thousands of pounds for a charity close to her heart

Nile Delta
Nile Delta

Penny Roberts was the only female tetraplegic to have completed the gruelling five-day trek along the River Nile to help raise £70,000 for charity Regain, which supports people paralysed in sporting accidents.

Penny was told she would never regain movement below her chest following a skydiving accident 12 years ago.

The nurse's life changed forever when a team sky-dive in Florida - a sport she had enjoyed for many years - turned in to a nightmare. Penny's main and reserve chutes tangled and only one-third of a parachute was in operation as she fell 13,000ft on to a concrete runway.

Through determination and hard work, the mum-of-one can now move her arms, although she cannot sit up without support and requires round-the-clock care.

Penny, who lives near Ilkley, said of the Nile trip: "We rode for four days but despite the heat, I found it easier than when I did the same trek in Kenya last year. Kenya was like riding around the Yorkshire Dales, only in 30-degree heat. Egypt was much flatter.

Metro Market

A real holiday surprise – well it looks like a metro store, and it sounds like a metro store, looks so, sounds so, so it is so!

Yes, local Hurghadians we are getting more and more choices. Unless our eyes deceive us, Metro has arrived.

You can't miss the signs on the main road in Dahar, just between the Red Sea Hospital and the Abu Ashara Family Market.

Let’s hope for fresh foods and lots of selection at competitive rates.

Satellite art in the Bible's image

Satellite Art
Satellite Art

A satellite image of the parting of the Red Sea has confirmed that the boiling wall of water he depicted in the 1956 film The Ten Commandments was right on the mark.

The picture appears to have been plucked directly from Google Earth. It's a fake, of course, part of a project called God's Eye View created by the Glue Society, the Sydney art and design collective whose melted ice-cream van won the People's Choice Award at last year's Sculpture By The Sea. The other pictures in the set show the crucifixion, Noah's Ark and the Garden of Eden.

Kneebone described the four pictures as digital "jigsaw puzzles" made by piecing together real satellite images. The picture of the Red Sea, for example, uses photographs of Niagara Falls to create the impression of tonnes of foaming water.

Most of the images are geographically accurate, although Kneebone admits that parts of the Garden of Eden are from Belgium.

Sharm El Sheikh
Sharm El Sheikh

The resort of Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt has been confirmed as the world's leading dive destination at the 2007 World Travel Awards.

Some 167,000 tourism professionals voted for the awards, which were once described by the Wall Street Journal as "the travel industry's equivalent of the Oscars".

At the 2007 ceremony, held on the Turks and Caicos islands, the reputation of Sharm El Sheikh as the world's foremost destination for diving was confirmed, while the city's Royal Savoy hotel was named the top diving resort.

The Pyramids, another Egyptian holiday feature, took the accolade for the world's leading attraction.

Elsewhere, Disney World in Florida was recognised as the leading theme park, while Orlando was acknowledged as the home of the foremost tourist and convention bureau.

The Adam & Eve at Belek, Turkey, won the top design hotel award, while the honour for the world's leading destination was presented to London.

Golf Course in Egypt

Egypt is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing, most popular emerging golf destinations in the world which has created more Fly2let opportunities.

The World Travel and Tourism Council is predicting close to an 8 percent rise in tourism arrivals in Egypt in 2007, many of whom are drawn to Egypt’s golfing scene as part of their overall Egyptian holiday experience.

There are already around 16 international standard golf courses currently operational across Egypt - from the incredible Mena House Golf Course which directly overlooks the Pyramids, to the Cascades Golf Resort on the Red Sea which has played host to national and international tournaments - and there are more courses and golf resorts being developed at the current time, particularly along the Red Sea Riviera.

Mangroovy Beach

For the growing number of those who choose to spend their Red Sea holidays in small downtown hotels or in rented flats or houses which most likely don't have direct access to a beach, there are a number of nice public beaches open all year round. Each week we will present u one of the most popular ones.

Mangroovy Beach
Wilderness is the right word to describe the feeling of this large, isolated sandy beach at the northern tip of El Gouna. Open to a wide shallow sandy bottom of turquoise water and a small court of mangroves by the sea, it is perfect when you want to be away from everything.

Huts, umbrellas, sun-beds, a Mediterranean style restaurant and bar, surf center, beach-volley and the great summer day- and nighttime beach parties.
Showers and bathrooms. Pets allowed. No entrance fee.

Festive Photo

Festive Photo

What you will need:

• Pencil and ruler
• Scissors
• Card stock
• Jar lid, 3 inches or so in diameter
• Decorative string or thin elastic cording
• Glue stick or glue dots
• Shiny paper
• Craft scissors (optional)
• Glitter glue or stickers
• Photo

How to make it:

1. For each card, measure and cut a 9- by 4-inch piece of card stock and fold it in half. Starting at the fold, draw a simple ornament shape, tracing around the jar lid to create the round portion. Cut out the ornament, going through both layers but leaving the fold intact.

2. Open up the cutout and lay a 9-inch length of string or cording across the crease.

3. Apply glue to the paper just below it, refold the paper, and tie the string ends together to form a hanging loop.

4. Cut a square from the shiny paper to fold over the top of the ornament, using craft scissors for decorative edges, if you like. Stick it in place with glue dots. Decorate the outside with glitter glue or stickers, then glue a photo, trimmed to fit, inside the card.

Cashews

Cashews

The delicately flavored cashew nut is a favorite between meal snack that can be readily found in your local market year round. It also makes wonderful nut butter and a special addition to salads and stir-fry dishes.

Cashew nuts are actually the kidney-shaped seeds that adhere to the bottom of the cashew apple, the fruit of the cashew tree, which is native to the coastal areas of northeastern Brazil. While cashew apples are not appreciated in the United States, they are regarded as delicacies in Brazil and the Caribbean. Cashews are always sold shelled because the interior of the shells contains a caustic resin, known as cashew balm, which must be carefully removed before the nuts are fit for consumption. This caustic resin is actually used in industry to make varnishes and insecticides.

Health Benefits

Not only do cashews have a lower fat content than most other nuts, approximately 75% of their fat is unsaturated fatty acids, plus about 75% of this unsaturated fatty acid content is oleic acid, the same heart-healthy monounsaturated fat found in olive oil. Studies show that oleic acid promotes good cardiovascular health, even in individuals with diabetes.
