HEPCA: violator of the month |
Red Sea environment |
| What's new |
 |
|
On the 16th of May, 2007, the bay at Marsa Abu Dabab was closed to all water-based activities. This was agreed and carried out by all operators of the area to protect the endangered Dugong.
Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) took this decision due to concern over the harassment of these creatures, and the threat this posed to their continued presence.
This agreement was to include diving, snorkeling, boating and any other activities that could interfere with the natural behaviour of the resident dugong (sea cow) population.
What is a Dugong?
The dugong has a mythical history; once considered mermaids, these curious mammals are herbivores whose survival depends on their eating just two types of seagrass found on the seafloor of the Red Sea. This delicate habitat is at risk from dredging and filling for building developments, and also herbicidal run-off from landscaping projects. Dugongs are also particularly vulnerable to passing boats and fishing nets, as are the many turtles that frequent here.
Enemy and violator of the month: M/Y CASSIOPEIA
The violator of the month‚ is an initiative taken by HEPCA on regular basis along other legal violation procedures.
Even upon repeatedly requesting the boat to respect the closure scheme of the Abo Dabab bay, M/Y Cassiopeia has been over and over sighted operating in the bay.
Large numbers of divers are diving off the boat straight into the sea grass area with no consideration to the already extremely weakened Dugong inhabiting this area.

Mini pumpkins |
What you will need:
1. Cardboard egg carton
2. Orange paint
3. Glue
4. Paperclip
5. Green pipe cleaners or tissue paper
6. Black marker
How to make it:
1. Cut two cups from a cardboard egg carton. Run a bead of glue along the top edge of one cup. Invert the second cup and position it atop the first, making sure the cut edges align.
2. Once the glue dries, coat the little shell with orange acrylic paint. When the paint is dry, use the end of a paper clip to poke a hole in the top of the pumpkin.
3. Make a stem and curly vines out of green pipe cleaners or twisted crepe paper, and push the ends through the hole. Use a black marker to draw on a jack-o'-lantern face. |
