Eid: Celebration for the Young and Old |
As on Thursday 13th, Ramadan has ended - the festival of Eid al-Fitr starts, which is usually a three day holiday in Egypt. |

The word Eid is an Arabic name that means a festivity, a celebration, a recurring happiness, and a feast. In Islam, there are two major Eids namely "Eid al-Fitr" (Festival of Breaking the Fast) celebrating the end of Ramadan and "Eid al-Adha" (Festival of Sacrifice) which coincides with the Hajj and commemorates prophet Abraham’s sacrifice of a sheep in place of prophet Ishmael.
Eid al-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims after fasting the month of Ramadan as a matter of thanks and gratitude to Almighty Allah. It takes place on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the lunar calendar. Eid al-Fitr is a happy celebration with new clothes, gifts, and plenty of good food. Though technically, Eid al-Fitr is one day, Eid festivities usually last three days in Egypt with vacations for schools, universities and government offices. Some stores and restaurants are closed during Eid, too.
The Eid day starts with a small snack followed by Eid Prayers (Salat al-Eid) in congregation attended by men, women and children. Afterwards neighbors, friends and relatives start greeting each other. The most common greeting is "Eid Mubarak" (Have a blessed Eid). Children are As the Streets of Cairo wind down from Ramadan, Eid Begins normally given gifts, which traditionally are new clothes to wear throughout the Eid. Also, women (particularly mothers, wives, sisters and daughters) are commonly given special gifts by their loved ones.
SpotLocal wishes everyone a happy Eid!

The Pharoahs played well and should have won by a much bigger margin, but were wasteful in front of goal.
With strikers Emad Moteab and Amr Zaki firing blanks, coach Hassan Shehata pulled the pair off and replaced them with two midfielders.
The goal was to come from one of the substitutes, as Ismaili midfielder Mohamed Sadle headed home in the 76th minute.
Needing a win to qualify, the Zebras defended for much of the match but did produce some useful counter-attacks.
A crowd of just 7,000 watched the match at the 80,000-seater Cairo International Stadium.

10. Visit the desert
EIf you have time on your hands and want to experience the ultimate in desolate, wide-open spaces, don't leave Egypt without visiting the Western Desert. Also known as the Libyan Desert, this 2.8 million sq m land (or sand) mass stretches from the banks of the Nile well into Libya. The only habitable parts of this arid land are five isolated but highly fertile oases - Kharga, Dakhla, Farafra, Bahariyya and Siwa.
Get a local guide to accompany you when venturing into the desert - otherwise you might never find your way out. The best time to visit this part of the world is from October through March, as summer temperatures in the Western Desert soar well into the 50s (Celsius).

| Leaving Footprints and Taking Memories |
| In an annual White Desert expedition, participants take out much more than they bring in |
| News |
 |

A Moonscape of giant white limestone rocks, many shaped like mushrooms, the White Desert contains an amazing diversity of scenic terrain ranging from hills of black rocks to mountains made of crystal — and unfortunately, the occasional pile of trash.
The 3,000 square kilometer desert, designated a protectorate by the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency in 2002, is a peaceful getaway to some and a means of financial security for others.
“When I saw the picture of this place, I asked, is this in Egypt?” says Ahmed Adel, a Cairene who volunteered to pick up trash littering this eco-tourist destination that lies six hours southwest of the capital.
Adel was among more than 150 others coming from 12 countries in 45-degree Celsius heat to pick up trash in the annual White Desert Cleanup. Held every May since 2001 and sponsored by The Farafra Development Association and Friends of the White Desert — two NGOs that focus on environmental preservation — the annual cleanup aims to raise awareness among both tourists and tour guides in an effort to encourage eco-friendly tourism. Saad Ali, the general manager of The Farafra Development Association, says that about a decade ago he saw the negative impact tourism was having. Gathering support from local tour guides and nearby residents, Ali set on a quest to both clean up the desert and the oasis towns themselves.

Carrots |
Easy to pack and perfect as crudités for that favorite dip, the crunchy texture and sweet taste of carrots is popular among both adults and children. Although they are shipped around the country from California throughout the year, locally grown carrots are in season in the summer and fall when they are the freshest and most flavorful.
The carrot has a thick, fleshy, deeply colored root, which grows underground, and feathery green leaves that emerge above ground. It is known scientifically as Daucus carota, a name that can be traced back to ancient Roman writings of the 3rd century. Carrots belong to the Umbelliferae family along with parsnips, fennel caraway, cumin and dill which all have the umbrella-like flower clusters that characterize this family of plants.
Health Benefits
Carrots are an excellent source of antioxidant compounds, and the richest vegetable source of the pro-vitamin A carotenes. Carrots' antioxidant compounds help protect against cardiovascular disease, cancer and also promote good vision, especially night vision.
