| New Egyptian Visa Regulation. |
| News |
 |
|
For those of you, that have already been to Egypt or Hurghada, you should be familiar with the two small orange and green visa stamps which have pasted and stamped into your passport in the past.
A lot of visitors to Egypt have had bad experiences with this process, which resulted in a multitude of complaints about this procedure, since, even though there has been an official price for theses stamps, it was not very transparent. This system left a big grey area, which local travel companies and tour guides exploited and cheated the just arrived guest out of their first money. Very sad indeed but luckily the Government has finally decided to change the visitors visa system which resulted in the beautiful new visa stamp (which you see here).
This new system is in effect since August 1st 2007, and as you can see is a standardised visa featuring an eagle impressed on silver paper, which, starting immediately, will be pasted into your passport and enables you to stay in Egypt for a maximum duration of 40 days. Furthermore, on the lower right corner of this new visa the official price of $15 US is printed in order to create more price transparency. When you pay in foreign currencies they will be converted to current day exchange rates. For example, if you pay this fee with €15 then you will receive about 25 Egyptian pounds (25 LE) in change.

Ramadan: Why Muslims Fast |
As with other duties in Islam, fasting becomes obligatory (i.e. one becomes accountable) after the age of puberty. |
| Featured article |
 |
Ramadan is this year beginning on Thursday the 13th September.
For Muslims, fasting has a number of benefits:
1. It helps one to feel compassion for those who are less fortunate and underprivileged, since each day Muslims feel greater appreciation for what they have as a result of feeling hunger and thirst.
2. It allows one to build a sense of self-control and will power, which can be beneficial throughout life in dealing with temptations and peer-pressure. Through fasting, Muslims learn to control their natural urges such as hunger and thirst, and thus are able to better resist temptations for things that are not necessary, such as drugs or other unhealthy or harmful substances and behaviours.
3. It offers a time for Muslims to “purify” their bodies as well as their souls, by developing a greater sense of humility, spirituality and community. Ramadan is a very spiritual time for Muslims, and often they invite each other to one another’s homes to break the fast and pray together. A greater sense of generosity and forgiveness is also characteristic of this time.
Ramadan Vocabulary list:
Ramadan - The 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.
Sawm - Arabic word that means “fasting”.
Suhoor - The pre-dawn breakfast meal eaten before beginning the daily fast.
Iftar - The evening meal, taken after sunset to break the daily fast.
Tarawih - Special prayers offered nightly during Ramadan, in which approximately 1/30th of the Qur’an is recited each night.
Eid al-Fitr - Festival at the end of Ramadan, in celebration of completing the month of fasting. This takes place on the 1st day of the next month

| Overnight trains: getting more than you bargained for |
| Ramsis station in Cairo: the departure point for passengers going to Luxor and Aswan. |
| Featured article |

Tip your chair back, relax and get a few hours sleep dreaming of the temples and history that lie ahead. That was what I was hoping to do last Friday when I boarded the night train from Cairo to Luxor.
Hopes of that soon faded as I was shown to my seat. Puzzled by the small cardboard ticket the size of a postage stamp which didn’t resemble any of the others I had previously purchased in Egypt, I soon understood the significance.
At 9.55pm, I was happily sitting on the platform chatting to a woman who had started talking to me. She was telling me of her adventure around Ramsis Station, being sent from one platform to another in an attempt to locate her train. She thought the train on the platform was, in fact, my train. Not the next one as the man selling cake had informed me. I bounded up with about a minute to spare and showed the man leaning on the train door my stub aka ticket.
He got the train worker to show me to my seat. Carriage number 2, seat 19. It seemed simple enough. But on arriving at the cabin we were greeted by a French man who proceeded to speak loudly in French to the Egyptian train worker saying that he had reserved all six seats in the cabin. This act is common everywhere: if you raise your voice when speaking in your own language abroad, the locals will understand you.
Bemused, the train employee led me to the next carriage, same seat number. To my surprise, it looked like a sleeper train, without the beds. Three seats adjacent to each other facing another set in a, erm, ‘cozy’ arrangement....

Egypt: How bazaar |
When visiting Egypt, there are ten things you absolutely must do. |
| Feature Article |

Continued from last weeks issue. click here to read no 4 of "When visiting Egypt, there are ten things you absolutely must do."
5. Visit a mosque
Cairo is not called the city of 1000 minarets just for fun - there is an abundance of mosques in this city, dating from the earliest periods of Islam up to modern varieties, and their marvellous, intricate designs are well worth a look.
Most mosques that allow visitors are in Islamic Cairo, although the oldest of them all, the Amr Ibn El-Aas Mosque, is located in Coptic or Old Cairo (the Christian part of the city). When visiting a mosque, boys and girls, remember to cover up your knees, shoulders and arms - and take your shoes off before you enter.
No. 6 on the list of things you absolutely must do in Egypt will follow next week.

Description & Behavior
Manta rays are the largest rays and are closely related to sharks. They are harmless and have no stinging tail. They are often seen with remoras and are very graceful and acrobatic. They can grow up to about 7 Metres across.
Mantas eat microscopic plankton, small fish, and tiny crustaceans. They funnel the food into their mouth while they swim, using two large, flap-like cephalic lobes which extend forward from the eyes.

| Keys in Egypt for inspiration |
| News |
 |
|
ALICIA KEYS took off to Egypt in a bid to find inspiration after she struggled with "confusing music" as she set about recording her new album. The Fallin' singer admits she was struggling to find her past form that earned her Grammy Awards and acclaim and decided she needed to take a holiday.
She travelled alone through Egypt, floating down the Nile and visiting ancient sites, like the Great Pyramid of Giza, just outside Cairo. She says, "I'm thinking, `Here is this structure that's been standing for thousands of years, no magic tricks, no cranes, just mind, will and hands.
"I had a profound realisation that with my mind and my hands I could create something that could last forever." Fully inspired, Keys returned to the studio and completed work on her upcoming album As I Am, which she states is like "Aretha Franklin singing a Janis Joplin song."
