| Pride of the Nile. |
| A stone throw from Africa, on the banks of the mighty Nile is Aswan, an Egyptian jewel, sun-baked, yet enjoying the lush advantages of life on the water's edge. |
| News |
 |
|
It starts out of nowhere, a sweet humming noise, which slowly builds to a powerful crescendo. Dressed in the traditional, long, dress-like costume of the region, the musician beats his hand on the side of a small hand-held drum as he sings. Oh la lei li – he repeats it, and we are invited to sing it back to him, each time louder than the first.
Such a simple, but powerful tune. One by one, we get up and move our hips to the beat of the drum, oblivious to our surroundings. The beautiful voice echoes around us, it bounces off the rugged desert dunes flanked by palm trees and reaches out across the powerful waters. All the while, our felucca, or traditional Egyptian sail boat, moves effortlessly along the mighty river, as other boats have done for centuries before.
As the music dies down and the dancing stops, we get lost in private thoughts, humbled by the history of this powerful waterway – the majestic Nile.

| Reptiles found in Saudi's luggage |
| Police had become suspicious when X-ray machines at the departure gate gave odd readings. Among the reptiles they found was a cobra, squirming to escape. |

 |
|
Snakes, chameleons and baby crocodiles were found in the 22-year-old's bags as he tried to board a Saudi-bound flight. The animals were confiscated and turned over to Cairo Zoo.
Brief panic
The passenger, who said he was unaware that transporting live reptiles was illegal in Egypt, was later allowed to return to Riyadh, the Saudi capital.
He had claimed the animals were needed for scientific research.
Witnesses told Egyptian state news agency Mena how the discovery triggered a brief panic among security personnel at the airport.
Mena reported that the haul included about 250 baby crocodiles.
"This is the largest smuggling attempt of Nile crocodiles in the whole of aviation history," the agency quoted airport vet Yusef Mamduh as saying.
In May, another Saudi national was caught carrying 700 live snakes in his hand luggage at the Cairo airport.
At the time, he told authorities that snakes were often kept by shopkeepers in glass jars or used as pets.

Egypt: How bazaar |
When visiting Egypt, there are ten things you absolutely must do. |
| Feature Article |
 |
|
Khan-Al Khalili Souk in Cairo |
Continued from last weeks issue. click here to read no 1 of "When visiting Egypt, there are ten things you absolutely must do."
2. Learn to haggle
Egyptians are natural barterers. They will charm you in a remarkable array of foreign languages (often without a hint of an accent) in order to sell you their wares perfumes, papyrus, jewellery, rugs, scarves and spices. As a result, even the least gullible of tourists can find themselves being relieved of exorbitant amounts of cash. One way of avoiding this is to learn the rules of haggling - and have fun with it.
The basic barter rules are:
1. Determine your starting price (a third of the seller's opening bid is usually a good gauge)
2. Be patient, and never negotiate without a smile on your face.
3. Learn to say no (la shukran) if you're not interested.
4. Once you are invited to share a cup of shai (strong minted tea), negotiations are seriously under way.
5. Be prepared to walk away - the moment you do, you'll often get the price you're happy to pay.
Great places to indulge in a haggle are the Aswan bazaars and the Khan-Al-Khalili souk in Cairo.
No. 3 on the list of things you absolutely must do in Egypt will follow next week.

| Hurghada, a water paradise in Egypt. |
| Featured Article |
 |
|
The city of Hurghada is one of the best know coastal cities in Egypt. Mainly if the intention is to do leisure activities in the water. Located in the southeast of the country, on the shore of the Red Sea, there are over 20 kilometres of beaches there. The different tones of blue of the sea, which range from dark to turquoise, attract the attention of visitors.
"A series of leisure activities are proposed to local visitors. The main one is diving", explained Aziza Osman, of the Tourism Office at the city. This sport is not, however, the only sea activity practiced in Hurghada. The city is renowned worldwide for other sports like windsurf, sailing and deep-sea fishing.
"In truth, the fact that the water on the coast of Hurghada is naturally warm causes the sea to be ideal for the breeding of rare fish and for the growth of coral reefs of incomparable beauty," stated Hanz Weber, a German tourist who has been visiting Hurghada regularly for almost 15 years.
According to him, the authorization of an excessive number of tourist complexes has affected the reefs, but the government of Egypt, according to Weber, has become aware of the matter in recent years, considering the effects that disorganized urbanization can have on nature..

Garlic |
Although garlic may not always bring good luck, protect against evil or ward off vampires, it is guaranteed to transform any meal into a bold, aromatic and healthy culinary experience.
Fresh, dried and powdered garlic are available in markets throughout the year, however, fresh varieties from California are in season from June through December.
Garlic is arranged in a head, called the "bulb," averaging about 2 inches in height and diameter consisting of numerous small separate cloves. Both the cloves and the entire bulb are encased in paper-like sheathes that can be white, off-white or pinkish. Although garlic cloves have a firm texture, they can be easily cut or crushed. The taste of garlic is like no other-it hits the palate with a hot pungency that is shadowed by a very subtle background sweetness. While elephant garlic has larger cloves, it is more closely related to the leek and therefore does not offer the full health benefits of regular garlic.
Health Benefits
Garlic is an excellent source of manganese, a very good source of vitamin B6 and vitamin C and a good source of selenium.
