Egyptologists think they have Hatshepsut's mummy
|
Egyptologists think they have identified with certainty the mummy of Hatshepsut, the most famous queen to rule ancient Egypt, found in a humble tomb in the Valley of the Kings, an archaeologist said on Monday. |
| News |
 |
|
Egypt's chief archaeologist, Zahi Hawass, will hold a news conference in Cairo on Wednesday. The Discovery Channel said he would announce what it called the most important find in the Valley of the Kings since the discovery of King Tutankhamun.
The archaeologist, who asked not to be named, said the candidate for identification as the mummy of Hatshepsut was one of two females found in 1903 in a small tomb believed to be that of Hatshepsut's wet-nurse, Sitre In.
Several Egyptologists have speculated over the years that one of the mummies was that of the queen, who ruled from between 1503 and 1482 BC -- at the height of ancient Egypt's power.
The archaeologist said Hawass would present new evidence for an identification but that not all Egyptologists are convinced he will be able to prove his case.
"It's based on teeth and body parts ... It's an interesting piece of scientific deduction which might point to the truth," the archaeologist said.
Egyptologist Elizabeth Thomas speculated many years ago that one of the mummies was Hatshepsut's because the positioning of the right arm over the woman's chest suggested royalty.

| Cephalopholis miniata |
| red sea marine life |
 |
|
Description & Behavior
Found around coral in areas with clear water. Easy to spot and fairly common. Range from 2 to 150 m and feed mostly on fish. Juveniles have yellow bodies with blue spots and as adults grow to around 41 cm. Like all groupers, Cephalopholis miniata has a large mouth and sharp teeth. They use grinding plates within their throats to break up prey. Groupers are the most important family of reef based predators. Territorial and solitary apart from in the mating season in June. Also common in other parts of the world, including Australia.
According to legend, the grouper was the first fish to have gills. This was because he swallowed a beautiful girl that he loved. The girl had sharp shells with her which she used to cut slits in the fish's body and swim to freedom..

Egyptian cinema celebrated

On June 20, 1907, the technique of the moving image was employed for the first time in Egypt to document the visit of Egypt's then ruler Khedive Abbas Helmi II to Alexandria.
Al-Ahram newspaper, appearing then from Alexandria, reported the following day that the famous Yassin photography shop in Raml Station Square in Alexandria had used a cinema camera to capture 'the visit of his highness to the academic institute of Morsi Aboul-Abbas Mosque, and how he was received by the scholars and students of the institute.'
Al-Ahram's news item said that the short documentary of the Khedive's visit was going to be shown in a special exhibition to be held the following week in the port city.
To commemorate the centenary of the Egyptian cinema, the 53rd Taormina Film Festival in Sicily, which started Saturday and runs to Friday, selected Egypt as this year's guest of honour.
In Taormina, and throughout the week-long festival, many Egyptian feature films, documentaries and shorts were to be screened 'to give a taste of the history of Egyptian cinema and its remarkable recent works,' the festival's organizers said.

Xaar, one of the world's leading suppliers of inkjet modern printing technology, is sponsoring an exhibition of one of the finest examples of an ancient colored document in the world: “The Book of the Dead of Ramose” at The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
The 3,000-year-old document is made up of papyrus sheets originally forming a 20m roll, and was unveiled on June 19. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view one of the finest and most recently restored Egyptian Books of the Dead in existence.
"One of the most striking features of the Ramose papyrus is the vibrancy of colors used in the painted scenes. It feels particularly appropriate that a company whose primary concern is with color printing should be involved with this project," said Julie Dawson, co-curator of the exhibition and Senior Assistant Keeper (Conservation) in the Antiquities Department in a statement to the press.
"The technical expertise of the Egyptian artists who worked on this papyrus is outstandingly high. Xaar has provided invaluable sponsorship towards an exhibition that allows us to bring this beautiful document before the public after two years of conservation work," added Helen Strudwick, co-curator and Outreach Officer, Ancient Egypt.
The Book of the Dead was a collection of spells and instructions placed in the tomb or coffin to ensure the dead person’s safe passage through the after-life. First written on linen mummy shrouds and later on rolls of papyrus, Books of the Dead are found in Ancient Egyptian burials from around 1650 BC.
