Support your local recycling plant

The garbage recycling industry accounts for 28 per cent of industrial investment in the US, 23 per cent in Britain and 35 per cent in Germany.In Egypt, recycling industry is to be found in backstreet factories

Recycle your garbage

Meanwhile, the traditional zabbaleen (rubbish collectors) were angry when three foreign companies were brought in to collect the city's refuse, thus depriving them of extra income from recycling garbage. Abdel Latif Abul Atta, a physics lecturer at Tanta University, says the problem in Egypt is that this industry not controlled by any authority and therefore does not abide by environmental laws.Abul Atta adds that stairwell factories use garbage full toxins, dangerous chemicals and heavy metals, to which they add carbon found in motor oil and limestone. This mixture is made into plastic bags and plastic cutlery.“The price per ton of imported plastic is LE7,000, whereas one ton of plastic made from rubbish costs only LE500, Abul Atta adds.Economist Abdel Rahman Gaballa at Helwan University said the Government should encourage investment in this sector and apply strict measures on those who might harm the environment and put public health at risk.“Cairo alone produces 8,000 tons of waste a day,” Gaballa said, adding that Arab world produces 6.89 million tons of trash a year.Rubbish collector Ragab Attia, 27, said he worked several hours every day, sorting out plastics from rubbish and he delivered them to a factory in Imbaba district.

Sabre or Long-Jawed Squirrelfish
Sargocentron spiniferum
red sea marine life
Sabre or Long-Jawed Squirrelfish, Photo copyright Tim Nicholson

Description & Behavior

This species is the largest of the squirrelfish. It's common in the Red Sea at all depths likely to be dived, and feeds primarily on crabs. A member of the Holocentridae family, squirrelfish have large eyes and are nocturnal. During the day you'll find them under ledges and in caves, away from the light. Growing up to 45 cm, they live alone or in small groups. You can distinguish Sargocentron spiniferum from other squirrel fish by the red blotch behind its eye.

Like many nocturnal fish, Sargocentron spiniferum is red. To us it is easy to spot during the day, but to other fish it blends into its dark crevice or cave. Long red light wavelengths don't penetrate water well, so fish colour vision tends to be tuned to the shorter, blue and ultra-violet, end of the spectrum. This means that red and pink fish are inconspicuous.

Amendments to child law in spotlight
The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) has been studying the amendments to Children's Law 12/1996. NCCM Chairman Moushira Khattab has recently said the law will bring together all provisions related to children to put them in one amended law.

Amendments to child laws

“In March 2003, a new strategy was announced for the protection of homeless children,” Khattab said.“For the last four years, the council has been inviting all relevant ministries and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to participate in amending the law. “The amendments were referred to the Prime Minister on April 29, 2007. On May 14, the ministerial committee for legal affairs discussed the draft bill.”Khattab added that the amendments were aimed at strengthening the Government's commitment to protect children in light of international agreements Egypt has signed on children's rights and protecting them from abuse or discrimination. The Amendments ensure the right of the child to prove his identity, to alternative care and to receive medical treatment.”Khattab explains that the amendments include the right of the Egyptian family to free birth certificates, the protection of children under 12 from criminal responsibility and their right to education.The amendments prohibit child labour for those less than 15 years old.Fawziya Abdel Sattar, a lecturer in criminal law at Cairo University, elaborates that the amendments stipulate 18 as the minimum age for marriage. She says this would be hard to apply in rural areas and would encourage the spread of orfi (unregistered) marriage.

Ancient Gold Center Discovered on the Nile
Evidence of large-scale gold extraction in the ancient Nubian kingdom of Kush has been found along the Nile River, archaeologists will announce today.
Ancient Site of the gold mines

The discovery is part of a race to save as many antiquities as possible before a dam inundates a hundred-mile (160-kilometer) stretch of the Nile in northern Sudan.

The presence of gold in the African region "may have been one of the main reasons for the colonization of Sudan by the ancient Egyptians," said Salah Mohammed Ahmed, the head of Sudan's antiquities agency.

Spreading out from the Nile, ancient Nubia followed the river from southern Egypt deep into what is now northern Sudan (Africa map). In the time of the pharaohs, Nubian lands were the subject of numerous incursions from the north by the Egyptians.

Archaeologists from the University of Chicago found more than 55 grinding stones at Hosh el-Geruf, about 225 miles (362 kilometers) north of the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.

Dated to between 2000 and 1500 B.C., the stones were used to grind ore, the team said. The ore then would have been washed with water to tease out gold flakes.

"Nubia was renowned for its gold deposits," said Geoff Emberling, a leader of the expedition.

Salt Dough Bag Pins

These playful and summery ornamental pins are perfect for hanging on backpacks or beach bags. Make several and give some to your friends!

parents & kids

This project is rated EASY to do.

5 and up.

What You Need

* Salt dough recipe (below)
* Acrylic paint in yellow, light blue, red, pink, white, tan and black
* Toothpick
* Paintbrush
* Keychain or backpack clips
* Clear jewelry cord
* Scissors
* Black marker

Recipe for Salt Dough
2 parts flour
1 part salt
1 part water

Mix ingredients until dough comes together. We used 4 tablespoons of flour and 2 tablespoons each of water and salt to make a small amount, enough to make 10 – 12 ornaments.

What You Do

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Place cookie sheet on counter.
2. For smiley face and beach ball, roll a piece of dough in your hands to form a ball about 1 inch in diameter.
3. Place rolled dough ball on cookie sheet and press down flat with your fingers.
4. Repeat this process for the ice cream cone. Start with the bottom scoop. Place a second smaller scoop on top. Make cone from another piece of dough.
5. Use a toothpick to draw lines on cone if you like.
6. Poke toothpick into dough toward the top of each ornament to make the hanger hole. With the toothpick through the dough and touching the cookie sheet, gently move the toothpick in a circle to enlarge the hole so it’s big enough to string cord through after the ornament is baked.
7. Bake the ornaments for 2 – 2.5 hours. Remove from oven and let cool completely.
8. Decorate with paint. Use the end of a toothpick to add sprinkles to ice cream. Use the end of a small paintbrush to dot on smiley face eyes. Use a black marker to draw on smiley mouth.
9. When paint is completely dry, thread cord through the hole. Tie in a knot, then tie the ends of the cord to a keychain clip. Trim the excess cord with scissors.

Figs nutrition facts
Nutrition Facts

Although dried figs are available throughout the year, there is nothing like the unique taste and texture of fresh figs. They are lusciously sweet with a texture that combines the chewiness of their flesh, the smoothness of their skin, and the crunchiness of their seeds. California figs are available from June through September; some European varieties are available through autumn.

Figs grow on the Ficus tree (Ficus carica), which is a member of the Mulberry family. They are unique in that they have an opening, called the "ostiole" or "eye," which is not connected to the tree, but which helps the fruit's development by increasing its communication with the environment. Figs range dramatically in color and subtly in texture depending upon the variety. The majority of figs are dried, either by exposure to sunlight or through an artificial process, creating a sweet and nutritious dried fruit that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Figs are a good source of potassium, a mineral that helps to control blood pressure. Since many people not only do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, but do consume high amounts of sodium as salt is frequently added to processed foods, they may be deficient in potassium. Low intake of potassium-rich foods, especially when coupled with a high intake of sodium, can lead to hypertension. In the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) study, one group ate servings of fruits and vegetables in place of snacks and sweets, and also ate low-fat dairy food. This diet delivered more potassium, magnesium and calcium. Another group ate a "usual" diet low in fruits and vegetables with a fat content like that found in the average American Diet. After eight weeks, the group that ate the enhanced diet lowered their blood pressure by an average of 5.5 points (systolic) over 3.0 points (diastolic). up.
