	Ancient Site of the gold mines

The discovery is part of a race to save as many antiquities as possible before a dam inundates a hundred-mile (160-kilometer) stretch of the Nile in northern Sudan.

The presence of gold in the African region "may have been one of the main reasons for the colonization of Sudan by the ancient Egyptians," said Salah Mohammed Ahmed, the head of Sudan's antiquities agency.

Spreading out from the Nile, ancient Nubia followed the river from southern Egypt deep into what is now northern Sudan (Africa map). In the time of the pharaohs, Nubian lands were the subject of numerous incursions from the north by the Egyptians.

Archaeologists from the University of Chicago found more than 55 grinding stones at Hosh el-Geruf, about 225 miles (362 kilometers) north of the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.

Dated to between 2000 and 1500 B.C., the stones were used to grind ore, the team said. The ore then would have been washed with water to tease out gold flakes.

"Nubia was renowned for its gold deposits," said Geoff Emberling, a leader of the expedition.

What You Need

* Salt dough recipe (below)
* Acrylic paint in yellow, light blue, red, pink, white, tan and black
* Toothpick
* Paintbrush
* Keychain or backpack clips
* Clear jewelry cord
* Scissors
* Black marker


Recipe for Salt Dough
2 parts flour
1 part salt
1 part water

Mix ingredients until dough comes together. We used 4 tablespoons of flour and 2 tablespoons each of water and salt to make a small amount, enough to make 10 – 12 ornaments.

What You Do

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Place cookie sheet on counter.
2. For smiley face and beach ball, roll a piece of dough in your hands to form a ball about 1 inch in diameter.
3. Place rolled dough ball on cookie sheet and press down flat with your fingers.
4. Repeat this process for the ice cream cone. Start with the bottom scoop. Place a second smaller scoop on top. Make cone from another piece of dough.
5. Use a toothpick to draw lines on cone if you like.
6. Poke toothpick into dough toward the top of each ornament to make the hanger hole. With the toothpick through the dough and touching the cookie sheet, gently move the toothpick in a circle to enlarge the hole so it’s big enough to string cord through after the ornament is baked.
7. Bake the ornaments for 2 – 2.5 hours. Remove from oven and let cool completely.
8. Decorate with paint. Use the end of a toothpick to add sprinkles to ice cream. Use the end of a small paintbrush to dot on smiley face eyes. Use a black marker to draw on smiley mouth.
9. When paint is completely dry, thread cord through the hole. Tie in a knot, then tie the ends of the cord to a keychain clip. Trim the excess cord with scissors.

Although dried figs are available throughout the year, there is nothing like the unique taste and texture of fresh figs. They are lusciously sweet with a texture that combines the chewiness of their flesh, the smoothness of their skin, and the crunchiness of their seeds. California figs are available from June through September; some European varieties are available through autumn.

Figs grow on the Ficus tree (Ficus carica), which is a member of the Mulberry family. They are unique in that they have an opening, called the "ostiole" or "eye," which is not connected to the tree, but which helps the fruit's development by increasing its communication with the environment. Figs range dramatically in color and subtly in texture depending upon the variety. The majority of figs are dried, either by exposure to sunlight or through an artificial process, creating a sweet and nutritious dried fruit that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Figs are a good source of potassium, a mineral that helps to control blood pressure. Since many people not only do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, but do consume high amounts of sodium as salt is frequently added to processed foods, they may be deficient in potassium. Low intake of potassium-rich foods, especially when coupled with a high intake of sodium, can lead to hypertension. In the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) study, one group ate servings of fruits and vegetables in place of snacks and sweets, and also ate low-fat dairy food. This diet delivered more potassium, magnesium and calcium. Another group ate a "usual" diet low in fruits and vegetables with a fat content like that found in the average American Diet. After eight weeks, the group that ate the enhanced diet lowered their blood pressure by an average of 5.5 points (systolic) over 3.0 points (diastolic). up.
