Egypt says no pyramids photo on Portuguese stamps
|
Egypt has refused to allow images of its Pyramids to be used on a Portuguese postal stamp featuring sites in a competition to name the new seven wonders of the world, the state-run news agency said on Sunday. |
| News |
 |
|
The Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted Zahi Hawass, Egypt's antiquities chief, as saying the pyramids at Giza should not be used on stamps issued for commercial purposes or included in a competition that is not based on scientific standards.
The Zurich-based New 7 Wonders Foundation removed the pyramids from the competition it is sponsoring after their inclusion sparked an outcry in Egypt.
The organisation, established by Swiss/Canadian filmmaker Bernard Weber, instead lists the pyramids -- the only original wonder of the world to have survived to the present day -- as an honorary candidate for which the public cannot vote.
Twenty-one sites from different historical periods around the world are still in the race, among them the Acropolis in Greece, the Statue of Liberty in the United States, France's Eiffel Tower, and the Kremlin and Red Square in Russia.
The public can vote online on www.new7wonders.com or by phone, with the winners to be announced on July 7 in Lisbon.

| Direct flight to link Sharm el Sheikh and Dubai & launch of EgyptAir Express |
Egypt’s national carrier, Egypt Air, will resume direct flight between Sharm El Sheikh and Dubai in June. |
| news |
 |
|
The airline will resume the service on June 14 when a direct flight from Sharm El Sheikh will arrive in Dubai and depart back to Sharm el Sheikh the same night. The plan is for the flight to initially only be once a week.
Egypt Air suspended direct service to Sharm El Sheikh from Dubai in 2005 due to weak demand, but is now confident that, with the rapid growth of Sharm el Sheikh and the general increase in popularity of Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera destinations, this time the service will be successful.
EgyptAir will launch a regional jet division in May 2007. The new subsidiary called EgyptAir Express will operate six Embraer E-170 and will launch services on 1 June 2007 from Cairo to Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada, Luxor, Aswan and Alexandria. A further six Embraer E-170 are also held on option.

Giza City Plans |
 |
Mark Lehner, director of the Giza Plateau Mapping Project (GPMP), realised that the excavation of the vast ancient settlement site at Giza offered him "an opportunity to give back to Egypt something in return for all the years I have enjoyed excavating here." He envisioned running a rigorous training programme for Egyptian inspectors to guide them in the basics of standard archaeological practice around the world, and today, all over the country, selected SCA inspectors are being trained in the standard practices that are now used for stratigraphic excavation and recording in Britain, France, other European countries, and the United States.
Lehner's aim harmonised with the objective of SCA director Zahi Hawass to train Egyptian inspectors in advanced techniques of field archaeology in order, eventually, to make prior training at one of the professional field schools a condition for appointment to join foreign missions. This fits in neatly with the concern of the American Research Centre in Egypt (ARCE) that funds be provided to train Egyptian inspectors. Gerry Scott, ARCE's recently- appointed director, reacted positively with a USAID grant.

| St Catherine’s mosaic restoration |
| Major restoration |
| community news |
 |
|
The mosaic which covers the upper part of the east dome of the church at St. Catherine’s is to undergo restoration by an Italian team who specialize in antique mosaics. The mosaic is considered the oldest and most beautiful of its kind in the Middle East and is thought to date back to the 6th century AD and have been made in Constantinople. It is made from small pieces of coloured glass mostly red and blue on a dark gold background. The mosaic depicts Christ standing with the Prophet Elijah on his left and Moses the Prophet on his right; it is framed with paintings of the Twelve Apostles and the abbot of the monastery. The agreement was made between the Italian team and the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) which stresses the need to restore the mosaic with the most suitable materials. Several parts of the mosaic have been damaged, with several tiles missing. The Italian restorers are confident that all the defects will be delicately restored to return the mosaic to its former beauty.

What You Need
* Corrugated cardboard (recycle a box)
* Scrap paper
* Pencil
* Scissors
* Construction paper (in desired colors)
* Glue or tacky glue
* Popsicle stick (regular or wide)
* Markers, as needed
* Wiggle eyes, if desired
How To Make It
Note: When you trace your pattern on the cardboard, make sure the cardboard interior ribs/lines are vertical so you can insert a Popsicle stick.
1. Draw your pattern up on the scrap paper. You may wish to look at some pictures of your favorite characters while you draw the pattern.
Note: For Digimon patterns, see the tips area below.
2. Cut out the pattern.
3. Trace around the pattern on construction paper and on the cardboard. Cut out.
Note: You may wish to make this pattern double sided, if so, double all your cut-outs.
4. Glue the construction paper to the cardboard.
5. Create the features for the character on the appropriate colored construction paper and cut out.
6. Glue the features on to the construction paper.
7. Put some glue on the end of the Popsicle stick.
8. Push the Popsicle stick into the inside of the cardboard.
9. Put a small amount of glue around the stick where it comes out of the cardboard to give it extra "hold".
10. Let dry.
11. Have fun keeping your cool!

Watermelon is not only great on a hot summer day, this delectable thirst-quencher may also help quench the inflammation that contributes to conditions like asthma, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis. It's being touted as so healthful it should be stored in your medicine chest. DietPower.com has declared watermelon one of "The 10 Best Foods."
Sweet, juicy watermelon is packed with some of the most important antioxidants in nature. It is an excellent source of vitamin C, and is also a very good source of vitamin A, notably through its concentration of beta-carotene. These powerful antioxidants travel through the body neutralizing free radicals.
Free radicals are substances in the body that can cause a great deal of damage. They are able to oxidize cholesterol, making it stick to blood vessel walls, where it can lead to heart attack or stroke. They can add to the severity of asthma attacks by causing airways to clamp down and close. They can increase the inflammation that occurs in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and cause most of the joint damage that occurs in these conditions, and they can damage cells lining the colon, turning them into cancer cells. Fortunately, vitamin C and beta-carotene are very good at getting rid of these harmful molecules and can therefore prevent the damage they would otherwise cause. As a matter of fact, high intakes of vitamin C and beta-carotene have been shown in a number of scientific studies to reduce the risk of heart disease, reduce the airway spasm that occurs in asthma, reduce the risk of colon cancer, and alleviate some of the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. A cup of watermelon provides 24.3% of the RDA for vitamin C, and, through its beta-carotene, 11.1% of the RDA for vitamin A.
Watermelon is also a very concentrated source of the carotenoid lycopene. Recent research shows watermelon contains more lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable, even tomatoes. Lycopene is well known for its ability to lower the risk of many different kinds of cancer, especially cancers of the prostate, lung, and stomach. Data are also suggestive of a benefit for cancers of the pancreas, colon and rectum, esophagus, oral cavity, breast, and cervix.
Watermelon is also a very good source of vitamin B6 and a good source of vitamin B1, potassium and magnesium.
A watermelon's delectable flesh has no cholesterol and virtually no fat (almost none of which is saturated) — a stellar accomplishment for a food often served as a dessert at picnics. A whole cup of watermelon contains only 48 calories.
