Egypt Eyes Tourism Investment

EGYPT needs huge investment in the tourism sector to meet anticipated demand for facilities, a top official has said.

The country is experiencing continued investment in hotel development and on-site innovation, with properties across the destination working to increase their hosting capacities,” said Amr el-Ezabi, chairman of Egyptian Tourism Authority.
In order to accommodate the expected rise from 8.6mn visitors in 2004 to 16mn in 2014, another 665 hotels were currently being developed, he told a press conference.
This would add 131,400 hotel rooms to Egypt’s existing 1,143 hotels and 180,000 rooms, according to the Egyptian Hotel Association.
The country’s ability to host more visitors had also been aided by upgrades to Cairo International Airport which would allow it to handle about 11mn passengers a year by 2007, up from 10.2mn in 2005.
Ezabi felt there was plenty room for further investment in resorts and other tourism development projects.
He expects to see considerable expansion on both the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts, especially now that Egypt had streamlined its investment policies to make it easier for foreign companies to establish operations.
In order to encourage and cater to increasing numbers of international tourists, the Egyptian government had made a multi-million dollar investment in developing and enhancing tourism facilities and services in key tourist centres.
Egypt is home to one of the youngest overseas property markets in the Middle East with many new residential developments springing up along the Red Sea and Mediterranean coasts. They offer huge investment potential for purchasers.

Grinham Reclaims Hurghada Crown!

RESULTS: Women's Hurghada Squash International

news

Grinham/Omniya

A packed crowd cheered on the local favourite - and second seed Kawy established leads in all three games. But Grinham, the 30-year-old top seed from Queensland, each time pulled back the deficit - and went on to beat her 21-year-old opponent 9-4, 9-6, 9-4 in 44 minutes, thus avenging her defeat in last year's final.

"It was a real relief," said the new champion afterwards. "I was just happy to have played well and to have been really focused. If anything it was better than yesterday.

"Sometimes it has been a bit disappointing to come off court recently knowing I could have played a bit better but didn't.

"I wasn't confident coming into the event, but I played well against Engy (Kheirallah) and carried it forward tonight. The mental thing is very important when you are playing a top player," added Grinham.

The former world number one from Toowoomba, who is based in Cairo, now boasts 23 WISPA World Tour titles - and has extended her lead above Malaysian rival Nicol David as the current player with the most Tour titles.

Dugong National Sighting Program
Preserve Red Sea Dugong
red sea marine life

Dugong

We are proud to inform you that Hepca has decided to launch a national sighting program for the dugong in the red sea. This is the first step in a full comprehensive program to save the few remaining individuals from this endangered specie along the red sea coastline. the program will include and accept volunteers from the diving industry and volunteers from all over the world. All the data collected will pour into a GIS database that will give us a clearer, more accurate and an ample idea about the habits and attitude of these creatures in their habitat.

An immediate intervention was taken by Hepca in the Abu Dabbab bay supported by its members in the south by installing a zoning line to prevent motorized boats to enter the bay to minimize the chance of the dugong being hit or injured by propellers of these boats.

Today, we are facing a serious situation with the increasing number of hotels that overlook the bay and the increasing number of unaware visitors.

Perfect 29 mln-year-old fossilised skull unearthed in Egypt
Fossils
news

Elwyn Simons with 1966 male skull (left) and much smaller and better preserved new female specimen.

BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhuanet) -- The second and almost perfect 29 million-year-old fossilised skull of an ancient relative of humans, apes and monkeys has been unearthed in Egypt, media reported Tuesday.

The skull, from a species known as Aegyptopithecus zeuxis -- "linking Egyptian ape" or dawn ape, was identified by Duke University primatologist Elwyn Simons in a quarry on the outskirts of Cairo. Because of the new specimen's remarkable wholeness, Simons and his colleagues were able to subject it to micro CT scanning, a computerized X-ray technique that can be used to calculate the approximate dimensions of the brain the cranium once encased.

According to Simons, the specimen is from a young female that lived in the early Oligocene, a period of global cooling, volcanic eruptions and seismic disturbance, driven by the collision of the Indian and Asian continental plates.

Based on previous fossils collected at the same dig site in a quarry outside Cairo, scientists have hypothesized that this early monkey already would have had a relatively large brain, said Simons.
