Feature Article

As the Egyptian marketplace grows and matures, so too do its needs.

Reliable computer systems and networks are a backbone of any successful modern business, and one company in the Red Sea area stands out for providing the professionalism and IT expertise that discerning customers demand: Hurghada-based Neural Systems.

Matthew Platten and Benn Bollay created Neural Systems in 2005, after spying a gap in the market. "I started to realize that nobody around was providing high end, business to business computer solutions," says Matthew, who worked as a network engineer and consultant in France before coming to Egypt. He and Benn, once a Silicon Valley software engineer, took a leap of faith and left their jobs in the diving industry to found the new company.

Neural Systems now provides a full range of IT services, including network design, setup, and maintenance; computer troubleshooting services; and custom software design. One popular product is the DivePlan software package, created from the ground up by Neural Systems and designed specifically to meet Egyptian dive centers' requirements. "Most software is written for what they think we want. This is written for what we need,"
said one satisfied customer.

Not content to rest on their laurels, Neural Systems has several new projects in the works, including a highly flexible equipment tracking software which can be adapted to suit any business's needs. In addition, Benn and Matthew are working towards their more general goal of furthering the use of technology in Egyptian business, especially freeware and open source software products. And of course, they will continue their commitment to quality and flexibility. "Egypt is a rising market with expanding needs in the IT realm, and Neural System can satisfy those needs, whatever their shape," Benn summarizes.

Make your Escape.... GOLFING IN EGYPT

Egypt’s selection of greens is a matter of course. The desert isn’t the only sand trap in Egypt — there is an increasing number of highly rated golf courses that draw professionals and amateurs alike. Here are some of your best options for going green:

The Cascades at Soma Bay Golf Resort and Country Club (Hurghada)

Located in the center of Soma Bay, the Cascades golf course is open to all guests at the resort complex, including Sheraton Soma Bay Resort and La Residence Hotel, among others. Designed by Gary Player, the course was ranked 11th in the world by the readers of Golf Journal. It is an impressive 18-hole championship course with a rating of 71. Beginners can get into the swing of things at the Golf Academy, with its nine-hole Challenge Course.

The clubhouse itself resembles a European countryside mansion, overlooking a rocky waterfall that pours into a series of deep blue lakes in the midst of hilly green expanses that lead to the Red Sea. (tel: +20 (0) 65 / 3549-896 , www.somabay.com)

Katameya Heights Golf and Tennis Resort (Cairo)

Katameya Heights’ hilly terrain has been sculpted into an exciting 18-hole championship course with spectacular views of the surrounding scenery. The course’s changes in elevation demand a creative approach from golfers. With a separate nine-hole course, Cairo’s oldest golf course has options to suit all playing abilities.

Club facilities include a driving range with five target greens and three practice greens, a pro shop, caddies, power and pull carts, and food and beverage on the course. For novices there are lessons with golf pros, video swing analysis and a golf academy.

The clubhouse offers two restaurants, two bars and spa, gym and entertainment facilities.

The club also hosts an International Golf Academy for teaching all levels of golf, with a 3-hole, short game area and a double-ended driving range for training and practice. News ...

A new form of lionfish has been evolving in the Red Sea during the past four decades, says new research.

According to a study undertaken by Lev Fishelson of Tel Aviv University which was published today in the journal Environmental Biology of Fishes, the lionfish, Pterois volitans, found in the Red Sea has changed in appearance over the past 40 years and a new form has evolved.

Rather than the normal ray-like supraocular tentacles which appear just above the eyes of the lionfish (see above picture), the new form has evolved feather-like tentacles in which one or both have a sharply defined black eye spot with a white ring around it.

In adults, these tentacles are much broader at the tips than the ray-like tentacles of most volitans, and look rather like a peacock's feather. They can measure up to 5cm in length and over 1cm in width at the tip.

The additional ornamentation of the supraocular tentacles of Pterois volitans has been known about for some time, and Fishelson has been monitoring the structure and its spread through the volitans populations of the Red Sea for the past 25 years. It is believed to have been first recorded in the Red Sea at the southern tip of Sinai, but fish bearing the same characteristics have steadily progressed up the Gulf of Aqaba. Over the past decade, both lionfish morphs have been found living together at the northern end of the Gulf.

Another Epic in Hurghada??

Defending champion Rachael Grinham and local favourite Omenya Abdel Kawy are seeded to do battle in the final of the Hurghada International, as they did twelve month ago when Grinham, the Australian former world number one who is redident in Cairo, came from two games down to defeat Kawy 10/8 in the fifth.

The Schedule

Body & Soul ::: FOOT CARE

Tired & swollen Feet

* Rest your feet above your head for 10 minutes; do this by lying at right angles to a wall, or on the bed with your feet up on the headboard, or on the floor with your feet resting on the edge of a chair. Any swelling will disappear as trapped fluids travel back your legs towards your heart.

* Plunge your feet into a tub of cold water or sit on the side of the bath with your feet under the cold tap; then put them up for a while.

* Roll your feet over a couple of chilled cans of drink straight from the fridge or use a cold mineral water bottle.

* Spritz feet with a cooling foot spray, you can buy minty foot spray in most drug stores -keep foot spray in the fridge in hot weather and use it after a hot day outside to cool down your feet .

* Foot massage is a fast treat for over-worked, over-stressed feet. An invigorating foot massage with minty, grainy Body Sloughing Cream, showered off and followed by a soothing rub-down with Aloe Body Balm helps tired feet to restore themselves.

Parents & Kids - HAPPY MOTHERS DAY ::: 14.05.2006

Mother's Day and What it Really Means

To understand Mother's Day and what it really means, you need to understand the person in your life called 'Mother'. Mother is one who nurtures you in her womb for nine months and brings you forth to enjoy the supreme blessing on earth, that is, Life. Mother is one who guides you through your infancy and turns the soft, helpless creature to the powerful and successful YOU. She is the guardian angel protecting you and supporting you, feeling for you and serving you silently always with a smile on her face. She prides herself watching you grow and provides you a shoulder to cry on whenever you need. She is every child's best friend.

For a child, every single day should be a Mothers Day. The essence of the meaning of Mother's Day is in the fact that we should try and make this day every year a memorable one for your mother. She should cherish the special feeling of this day and the intensity of that feeling should last her the lifetime.

This is the day to stop, remember, and pray for that special person in our life, without whom we would not have been, what we are today; a day to prove that all her efforts, towards making us a complete person, have been worthwhile and make her feel proud for us. In the broader sense of the term, Mother's Day is a day to be grateful to God for being so kind as to bless us with an angel in the form of Mother.
