What Is the Sharks and Dolphins Sighting Program?

Abu Salama Society started its Research activities in 2005. It began with the ‘Dolphin Habitat Conservation and Sustainable Use’ Project funded by the Italian International Cooperation through ‘Dept for Development Swap’ Program signed with the Egyptian Government. During the Project Abu Salama sought to involve its members and the private sector in a program that could benefit any scientific work that will be carried out in the future and is related to Marine Mammals or sharks. Through discussing the idea with various parties the Society came to the conclusion of introducing Sharks to the sighting program and eventually both dolphins and sharks were included in a program to register the Vertebrates sightings in the Red Sea. We hope to have a network of volunteers who are concerned about the large marine vertebrate’s welfare and that they would participate in the Program.

Abu Salama Society does not have the resources to be in the field all of the time, nor can we adequately cover more than 800 KM of the coast of the Red Sea. Therefore to identify and measure threats, we need as many eyes on the water as possible to cover those times when we are not around. Sighting information can tell us a lot about the dolphins' and sharks’ movements, providing vital baseline information that can be used to determine future research and management priorities.
It is very easy for you to take action in protecting the Red Sea marine environment and also help the Society. Soon you will be able to either register on line and get a unique code to enable you to log into the data base any time you see a dolphin or a shark or you could submit your sighting information, print out a sighting form and fax it to us at the address provided or report any sighting to the project coordinators that will soon be announced. This sort of information can give us a better idea of how often dolphins or sharks use a specific area.

The sighting program will be launched soon and till it is active on-line you can fill in the request to join the program and send it to us by fax.

We feel that the community needs to take pride in and be responsible for our marine environment and by sharing your knowledge, important messages can be passed on to all.

Abu Salama Society is a not-for-profit Organisation based in the Red Sea. The society aims to protect the marine mammals including and not limited to the Spinners Dolphin families at the South cost of the Egyptian Red Sea. The Society will achieve its goals through promoting and co-ordinating scientific studies and gathering and disseminating cetaceans information to its members and the general public.

Make your Escape.... Nile Cruise

NILE CRUISES

Enjoy the calming effect of riverside scenery as you drift along in style

Little has more mystique than a Nile cruise — pastime of Pharaohs, kings and novelists. It’s not just a tourist highlight, but a great relaxing getaway for those who live here.

Most cruises depart from Luxor or Aswan, last for three to four days and include full board, entrance fees and guided excursions to some of Egypt’s spectacular landmarks in Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Esna and Luxor. Your Nile nights will be filled with entertainment such as a galabeya night, cocktail parties and a Nubian show.

  • Abercrombie and Kent Egypt Nile Cruises
The A&K fleet includes the Nile Intrepid, the Nile Adventurer, the Sunboat III and the Sunboat IV. Standard and deluxe cabins are available, as are presidential and royal suites. Amenities such as satellite TV and daily delivery of international newspapers add a luxurious touch.
In addition to the standard itinerary, optional excursions can be arranged to a Nubian village or a monastery. There is also a seven-night cruise which includes an excursion to Dendera and Abydos. You’ll even have the pleasure of having your very own local Egyptologist on board. (tel: (02) 393-6255)
  • Mövenpick Nile Cruises
Cruise from Luxor to Aswan enjoying five-star luxury with full-board accommodation. You can sail on the Radamis I or II, or ask about the newest addition to the Mövenpick fleet, the Royal Lotus, a deluxe floating hotel designed for year-round comfort. You can choose whether you want to include the guided excursions in the price. (tel: (02) 690-1797)
  • Seti First Nile Cruises
With a fleet of 12 boats, each with a different character, you're sure to find something that suits your cruising needs. Most notable: the Sudan, which provided the set for the filming of Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel Death on the Nile. Most of the Seti boats are five-star and offer a choice of singles, doubles, triples and suites. (tel: (02) 736-9820)
  • Oberoi Nile Cruises
Set sail on the five-star Scheherazade or Shahrayar or the super-luxurious Oberoi-Philae. Both cabins and suites are available; suites on the Oberoi-Philae have their own balconies. Three- and four-night options are available on all boats, while the Philae offers a six-night cruise, taking in the Temple of Dendera at Qena, twice a month. (tel: (02) 376-6644)
  • Felucca Fun
A felucca cruise is like camping along the most famous river in the world — your wallet will thank you as well. Your days include stops at Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo, with lots of time left over to soak in the sun, read that Naguib Mahfouz novel or chat with your traveling companions.
Aswan is the best place to arrange these trips. You can take a cruise downriver from Aswan to Luxor (a journey of about 280 kilometers) for four days and three nights or go upriver and take five days and four nights
  • The River Bus
From Maspero Station in Cairo, the River Bus offers a delightful outing in the Nile Delta. The trip to the Nile Barrages, built by Mohamed Ali Pasha in 1833, takes about 90 minutes. Between the Damietta and Rosetta barrages, you can enjoy the gardens and cafés or rent a bicycle. The River Bus itself costs a mere LE 2, and bicycle rentals go for LE 2–3 an hour
  • Blue Nile
If you long for a night on the Nile but moving ships make you queasy, board the Blue Nile. Permanently moored to Zamalek’s riverbank, this boat’s many top-flight restaurants offer Asian, Lebanese, Moroccan, American, international and Italian cuisines. For a large gathering, rent out a restaurant and arrange catering. (tel: (02) 735-3114)

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

On Friday, 28th April, the Daylight Saving Time starts in Egypt. This means at midnight 00:00 you should set your clock one hour later to be one o'clock 1:00.

The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time (called "Summer Time" in many places in the world) is to make better use of daylight. We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.
We call this period Daylight Saving Time. Benjamin Franklin originally suggested the idea. He wanted to take advantage of the additional daylight time in the summer when many people were sleeping.

Ancient objects found in Egypt

Cairo - The discovery of gold cartouches dating back to 1400 BC sheds new light on the relationship between two ancient Egyptian rulers, Egypt's antiquities department said Friday.

A team of French and Egyptian archaeologists have discovered two sets of nine solid gold cartouches bearing the name of Thotmusis III (who ruled from 1479-1425 BC) near the pharaoh's stepmother Queen Hatshepsut's temple in Luxor, 700km south of Cairo.

"These cartouches... which have the names of Hatshepsut and Thotmusis III have been found near Hatshepsut's obelisk which proves that the obelisk was erected by both rulers," said Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

Thotmusis III, who was Hatshepsut's stepson and co-ruler after the death of his father Thotmusis II in 1479 BC, was widely regarded as having had strained relations with the queen. Thotmusis III was a child when his father died and the rule of the kingdom was initially put in the hands of Hatsheput.

Until the latest discovery, Egyptologists believed that Thotmusis III destroyed Hatshepsut's statues out of jealousy upon her death in 1458 BC, particularly the ones in Hatshepsut's temple in el Deir el Bahary in the southern city of Luxor.

"This goes against earlier views that Thotmusis III tried to hide Hatshepsut's obelisk when he took over as ruler and that he worked to erase any traces left by the queen," Hawass said.

The new discoveries will be taken to the Luxor Museum to be put on display.

SQUASH WORLD OPEN RETURNS TO EGYPT

The Professional Squash Association has awarded the rights to host and promote the PSA Men's World Open Squash Championship to Egypt.

Sponsored by the Al-Ahram Foundation and staged from 28 August to 6 September, the 2006 Al-Ahram Men's World Open will boast a world ranking prize fund of $152,500 and will take place at the all-glass court in the Giza Plateaux, Cairo.

Gawain Briars, chief executive of the PSA, stated: “Every time I talk to fans of professional squash around the world, they always remind me of the incredible images of the Giza Plateaux and the pyramids – and now I’m delighted to confirm that the PSA Men's World Open is returning again to that iconic venue."

The 2006 World Open in Cairo will be followed by the World Open in Bermuda in 2007, and the 2008 World Open in Manchester, England.

Christian Leighton, chief executive of the World Squash Federation (WSF), said: "WSF is delighted that the Men's World Open is returning to Africa. Egypt has been leading the way for the continent and this event will create development opportunities for the sport in other African nations.

"With this event now confirmed, all World Championships up to 2008 have now been awarded," added the WSF chief.

Meanwhile, US-based squash promoter Satinder Bajwa of Complete Squash Solutions (CSS) has reached an agreement with the PSA to retain exclusive rights to the Super Series Squash Finals for a further five years, making it the game’s longest-running promoter partnership in the UK and the second longest worldwide behind the Hong Kong Open.

The eight-man tournament is promoted in partnership with London-based Sports Marketing Agency, WSM. The new deal will see Bajwa take the tournament through to 2010.
