Colona Divers - Red Sea

A dream comes true with Colona Divers

Minisafari, 3 days/2 nights with departure twice a week, every Wednesday and Saturday.

Guaranteed departure from our jetty in Hurghada at Magawish Resort.
By other words - only 1 diver needed!
Onboard our liveaboard boat Francesca - Inspiration friendly Nitrox fillstation.

On the safari you get a chance to really experiencewhat the Red Sea can offer, like wrecks, walls, drifts, intense coral reef and peaceful night diving. There are plenty of divesites in the Red Sea, suitable for all experience levels, because most of the divesites can offer easy as well as more advanced diving. The route goes either north or south. Weather conditions, the divers experience level and requests are the factors that finally determine the route.

The northern safari is suitable for divers who are interested in both wreck- and reef diving. North we find among others, the famous wreck of Thistlegorm, Rosalie Muller and the wrecks of Abu Nuhas.

On the southern safari, we go down towards the Safaga area, where we find amazing coral reefs and excellent dive sites, suitable for all experience levels. The fantastic reef of Abu Kafan, the Panorama reef and the famous wreck of Salem Express are situated in the Safaga area.

Largest crater in the great Sahara discovered

By: Boston University

Researchers from Boston University have discovered the remnants of the largest crater of the Great Sahara of North Africa, which may have been formed by a meteorite impact tens of millions of years ago. Dr. Farouk El-Baz made the discovery while studying satellite images of the Western Desert of Egypt with his colleague, Dr. Eman Ghoneim, at BU's Center for Remote Sensing.

The double-ringed crater - which has an outer rim surrounding an inner ring - is approximately 31 kilometers in diameter. Prior to the latest finding, the Sahara's biggest known crater, in Chad, measured just over 12 kilometers. According to El-Baz, the Center's director, the crater’s vast area suggests the location may have been hit by a meteorite the entire size of the famous Meteor (Barringer) Crater in Arizona which is 1.2 kilometers wide.

El-Baz named his find "Kebira," which means "large" in Arabic and also relates to the crater’s physical location on the northern tip of the Gilf Kebir region in southwestern Egypt. The reason why a crater this big had never been found before is something the scientists are speculating.

More ancient war goddess statues found in Egypt

CAIRO (AFP) - A team of German archeologists has unearthed 17 statues of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet during restoration work at an ancient temple in the southern city of Luxor, Culture Minister Faruq Hosni announced.

The team found the statues of the war goddess near the same site where six similar statues were unearthed last week, on the location of the 18th dynasty (1580-1314 BC) temple of pharaoh Amenhotep III on the west bank of the Nile, Hosni added in a statement received by AFP.

The black granite statues were life-size, measure between 1.7 metres and 1.8 metres and show Sekhmet sitting on a throne holding the Ankh, a hieroglyphic sign that represented life for the ancient Egyptians, said Zahi Hawas, head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
