Feature Article

Capriccio is a newly opened Crêperie-Bistrot situated in Dahar, Between Mubarak library and Shedwan Hotel. Its menu includes a wide variety of healthy light meals and drinks.

In the salad section for instance we have an exquisite Salade Niçoise, a typical Lebanese Fattouch, as well as the better known Hommos, Babaghanough and Mozarella salad.

The appetizers are mainly from the Lebanese cuisine: stuffed wine leaves, kobeiba, labna with oregano and olive oil are among the choices.

Our crêpes come in a variety of unique flavors: emmenthal cheese and smoked roast beef or the sweet crêpes with mutella, banana and honey or ice cream and chocolate sauce.

But the “pièce de résistance” is our unique chocolate fondue for 2 persons, provided that you wouldn’t forget to order it at the start of your meal.

A wide choice of drinks completes the menu: cold (fresh orange juice, fresh lemon juice with mint, shakes, etc…), hot (the best capuccino in town, tea, coffee, etc...) or alcoholic and drinks (wine and beer) are awaiting you.

As the name suggests, music is a main feature of Capriccio: a state-of- the- art sound system plays soft and relaxing music. And from the beginning of March there will be light live music every Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m

Capriccio is open every day from 1 p.m.

The Yolanda: a world record in a world-class venue

by John Keanby

Sharm El Sheikh has played host to many important events and functions, which helps explain why a relatively new and small town consistently makes the international media. The latest item of news sparked global interest in the dive community - Leigh Cunningham and Mark Andrew’s dive on the Yolanda wreck.

‘What’s that?’ you cry. You have dived it also and never made it into any publication bigger than your logbook! Beginning at a mere ten metres lays wreckage of the ship, which sank in April 1980. Further scattered wreckage continues down to one hundred and twenty metres beyond which few had ventured before. Wishing to get to the bottom of things (literally!) old friends Leigh and Mark decided to see just how far it went.

The answer, as read from their dive computers, was over two hundred metres, which more importantly was the acclaimed new world record for diving on a sunken wreck.

They reached the wreck after many months of planning and with the help of an international support group of twelve. Following several training dives around Sharm, they dived to 145m in the summer of 2005 where Leigh saw the bow of the long lost Yolanda. There was clearly much more below. On the 9th December 2005 both divers made the final drop to the stern. Leigh had six tanks, Mark had five and between them carrying enough trimix and decompression gas to complete the three and a half hour dive

UW Tunnel at Ras Mohammed: the Park views

The idea of an underwater transparent tunnel located in the very heart of one of the most famous marine parks of the Red Sea, the Ras Mohammed National Park, came from the realisation of the high number of tourists visiting Egypt who, for one reason or the other, cannot enjoy the beauty of our marine environment as scuba divers or snorkellers. The tunnel will help raise awareness of the beauty and fragility of the underwater world by promoting guided visits to children, elder people and all those who prefer to stay dry on land.

The project initially raised some sceptical and even worried opinions. It was feared that its construction and implementation would cause damage to the delicate marine habitat of the park. But the forces involved are making sure that the tunnel won’t damage anything, on the contrary, re doing their best in order that it will help protecting the environment.

North Sinai Diving

When:1 May - 31 Oct 2004 (annual)
Where:North Sinai,
EgyptCost:Varies
Opening Hours:All day

North Sinai offers the diver a very different experience to the more developed diving areas further south. The clear waters offer perfect visibility and some of the least spoilt reefs off the Egyptian coast.

Luxuriant coral gardens and sheer offshore canyons make for a dense population of reef fauna and the reefs themselves play home to a wide range of life from huge Napoleon Wrasse to tiny sparkling anthias. It is also common to see sea turtles and dolphins just off the coast.

$10,000 SanDisk 2006 Red Sea Photo Competition

April 29, 2006 20:30 at Isrotel's Ambassador Hotel lawn

Normally underwater photography is not an easy way to get rich and and only a few people worldwide are lucky enough to make living from it. During the Boot Expo in Germany I met an enthusiast who might soon change the above statement for even the most common underwater photographer. His Name is David Pilosof (a.k.a Pilo) and his vision was to organize the mother of all underwater photography contests. Something David always was annoyed by the majority of photo contests he participated in, ist that many times you never win much stuff that could be useful. Actually organizers and sponsors could assume that most people already have camera and housing when they go to an underwater photo competition. His idea was to give real money to the winners. You won’t believe it but he succeeded and convinced SanDisk to sponsor 10,000 USD. The small catch is that the contest takes place in far Israel, Eilat. But if the money is not the right reason to go there: the 1,000 bottles of Beer for the best image might be it! We smirk and instantly booked our tickets.
