    Christmas Traditions Around the World

    Christmas in Egypt

The Coptic Church is an Orthodox Church and in the Coptic Church Christmas is celebrated on the 7th January. Advent is observed for forty days and during this period people are expected to fast eating no meat, poultry or dairy products. Some people only do this during the last week of Advent.

On the Eve of Christmas everyone goes to church wearing a completely new outfit. The Christmas service ends at midnight with the ringing of church bells, then people go home to eat a special Christmas meal known as fata, which consists of bread, rice, garlic and boiled meat.

On Christmas morning people in Egypt visit friends and neighbors. They take with them kaik which is a type of shortbread, which they take with them to give to the people they visit and eaten with a drink known as shortbat. Christmas Day is a public holiday for Christians.

Wrecked off Safaga

Diving visitors to Safaga in Egypt have a new wreck to explore, after the passenger and car ferry Al Kahfain caught fire, was evacuated and sank off the port at the beginning of November.

The ferry lies about 8 miles out, in 22m of water. It was once the Ulster Queen, which plied between England and Northern Ireland - hence the name on the bell pictured here with its retriever, Khaled Kenawy, who works as a dive guide on the Red Sea dive boat Snapdragon and was among the first to dive the Al Kahfain.

Meanwhile the Hebat Allah, a ship sunk off Hurghada a year ago as an artificial reef, has been declared open for diving. The wreck is intended to boost Hurghada's attraction to divers and take the pressure off other sites.

Access was delayed while marine life formed and professionals assessed the wreck's suitability for different diving experience levels, and how dives should be run by guides. The Hebat Allah sank in 45m of water, rather than the 30m originally planned.

Body & Soul

A personal introduction to REIKI

'.did you jump?'

If you never want to cross the threshold,
The door will never open.
If you want to enter the garden of inauguration,
Follow your way past the thresholder.
It can be many things.
The projection of your fear.
The emanation of your longings.
The reflection of your ego.
Your inner teacher.
Your guardian angel. Companion to the light.
Pass the threshold and be guided.'

(by a friend who truly understands)

'.not the present is raising from the past but the past from the present.' ( a thriller by David Ambrose)

Reiki came to my life 2002. I just told a few people that I am interested in enegy work. 3 weeks later I had my first book being shipped from Germany about reiki. 6 weeks later I met a person who had exact information I needed about literature and: a telephone number I called 3 months later. That was the number of my Reiki teacher and now dear friend, who gave me all my tools, truth and confidence.

Introduced by her, I started to practice Reiki on myself and 4 months later after my second degree on others. Now, I am already a Reiki Master and able to pass on Reiki to others in my own Clinic in Hurghada.

Reiki is a part of my life, a habit, a way of living and thinking, my attitude, my guidance and help to observe; and my greatest and most unconvenient challenger to grow in self awareness.
Once you have decided following the path of your inner truth, proves come harder as before from time to time. Thay may occur as sudden awareness of your self-restriction and fears. Then a struggling to live for now, wasting my time in demanding from others or from myself. Then I have to remind myself that it is just me. I am the one who is choosing people, circumstances and my own comfort or discomfort. And that I have to readjust to the focus I want to choose. No one else will do it for me. In those moments I am alone.

'.fears do exist of the feeling of separation.
A fear is an illusion in the moment we replace it with love.'
(Barbara Brennan)

This leads me through processing my feelings, fears, disappointments, shyness, anger, my self-set boundaries.
Trying to face and surfacing.
Trying to forgive.
Trying to change thoughts.
Trying to love.
Discover my potential within all.

To transform negativity, to saty focused on positive things in patience and trust that everuthing happens for our best, is a long and hard way to go. Step by step I feel in obedience to the divine will that my life becomes calmer, easier, content. Believe conquers all by the end of the day as it is the hardest prove you wake up with in the morning.

'What we think about life comes true.'
(Louise Hay)

This is exactly where my journey started.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an individual selfawareness and healing system. It can be used on yourself and on others. Reiki is healing with passing energy though your hands to places on your body where the energy is distributed through your whole system, exactly there where it is needed. Giving or receiving Reiki is generally a joyous and peaceful experience. Reiki is balance. It works on all levels, the physical, the spirituall, the mental and the emotional level. It unlocks the inner flow of vital energy. The natural healing method of Reiki (Reiki Shiki Ryoho) was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900's and follows 5 basic ethical rules which are the essence of Reiki.
Reiki has no limits. It opens without loosing borders. It protects without getting defensive or rigid. Reiki increases harmony and forgiveness.
The word REIKI means: REI = universal KI = life energy/spirit

The universal life energy is undescribable but to feel. It is existing in all things as the base of life and being. As a natural process of living we are energetic beings and communicate energetically. Our mental and physical health depends on the balanced flow of energy through our body. Reiki is not a religion. It cannot control nor manipulate. It is the method of putting hands on and using the intuitive power we all have when we connect to the universal power. Practicing Reiki simply means to become a channel for life energy. He attunement in Reiki Level 1 opens and cleanses the Chakras. The frequency of energy in your body will increase and enables you to pass it through your hands. It connects you to the universal source of energy, until you realize that you already are and always were: Light.

Reiki can become your personal tool for growth and awareness that eveything that happens to us happens for a reason we created to learn. Reiki can help to discover your purpose in life and expands love and harmony.

The only pre-requisites are:

Your willingness to receive.
Your willingness to do it.
Your willingness to chosse the path of mindfulness in life.

Never forget that your choices are not the choices of others. Before looking and searching in the outside we have to observe the inside. From there your journey will start. With all the hope that Reiki may change your life to the better as it did to me.

With Love & Light,

Birgit

RECIPES

Spicy Gingerbread Cookies

1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup dark-brown sugar, packed
2 large eggs
1 cup unsulfured molasses
6 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
4 teaspoons ground ginger
4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1-1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon finely ground black pepper
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
Raisins, dragées, and/or red hot candies for decoration (optional)
Royal Icing for decoration (optional)

In a large bowl, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and molasses. In another bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, spices and salt. Stir flour mixture into butter mixture. Divide dough into thirds and wrap each third in plastic wrap. Chill for about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 350 F. Roll dough 1/8 inch thick between two pieces of waxed paper. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Transfer shapes to ungreased cookie sheets. If desired, decorate with raisins, dragées, and/or red hot candies. Refrigerate about 15 minutes. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until crisp but not dark. Allow to cool on the cookie sheet for 1 minute, then remove to wire racks to cool completely. If desired, decorate with Royal Icing .

Recipe Information
If you are going to use the cookies for decorations, make a hole for the cord or hook by poking the cookies with a toothpick or skewer as soon as they come out of the oven. Source: based on a recipe from Martha Stewart. We just toned down the black pepper a little bit. Martha uses 1 teaspoon of black pepper but we found it was a little bit too much for the kids. Some kids, however, really prefer Martha's original, so to each his own! If you'd like to kick it up, add the whole teaspoon of black pepper.
