Feature Article ... SOS Kinderdorf

The SOS Children's Village Cairo is located on a hilly site in the residential area of Heliopolis, on the north eastern edge of Cairo. It comprises 28 family houses, as well as several adjacent buildings. The offices, a hall for festivities and a library are housed in the Community House. Another building contains a large SOS Kindergarten which is also open to the children of the vicinity, whereby a good contact to the surroundings is maintained. The SOS children attend local schools.

In order to improve training possibilities for the people living in the surroundings of the SOS Children's Village the construction of a Hermann Gmeiner Primary- and Secondary School was decided. It started to operate in 1998. Today, approximately 2100 pupils attend this school.

The SOS Youth Home in Cairo was closed down in 1997. As a substitute, apartments have been rented by SOS in order to accommodate young people (12 years and older) from the SOS Children's Villages. They are assisted and taken care of by educators from SOS.

Alexandria is located on the western fringe of the Nile Delta. It has a population of approx. 3 million people - which makes it the second largest city of Egypt - and it is Egypt's most important harbour on the Mediterranean coast. The SOS Children's Village of Alexandria is located 33 kms outside the city, on the road leading to Cairo, on a beautiful verdurous terrain.

The SOS Children's Village Alexandria comprises 10 family houses in which up to 100 children can be cared for, a house for the Village Director and various adjacent buildings, like a laundry, a workshop, etc. The SOS Children's Village has its own kindergarten which is also attended by the children from the vicinity. In the administration block are the offices, a hall for festivities, a small medical office and a shop. Several bungalows were also built in the SOS Children's Village Alexandria, so that the beautiful location of the Village close to the sea can be enjoyed by the children from the other SOS Children's Villages of Egypt, too. Summer holiday camps take place here every year which meet with great enthusiasm from everybody.

Since 1987, the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School has been in operation; it will eventually take 270 pupils. It is run as a private school and is open to the public for a fee. A Youth House has also been erected, where adolescent youths can live during their vocational or professional training.

The SOS Children's Village Tanta was built 4 km outside the centre of the city, in the suburb of Sibirbai, where the university is situated. It comprises 11 family houses, an adjacent building with a workshop, laundry and storage room, as well as a Community House, where the offices, a multi-purpose hall, a small shop, a library and a clinic are housed.

There is also a large SOS kindergarten in the SOS Children's Village of Tanta, which is open not only to the SOS children, but also to the children of the neighbouring residential section. The older children attend local schools in the immediate vicinity of the Children's Village, which furthers the contact with the surrounding population.

In the SOS Children's Village special attention is paid to children with poor learning ability, they are tutored by students of the nearby Al-Azhar University. A Youth House has also been built for the adolescent youths, where they can stay as long as they undergo a training.

Dubai 2005 will be held at Airport Expo Dubai from November 20 - 24 and is organised by F&E in conjunction with the Department of Civil Aviation, Government of Dubai and in collaboration with the UAE Armed Forces.

Next week the Dubai Air Show will bring to the fore the battle between the giants of global aviation: Airbus and Boeing. The first landing of the Airbus A380 superjumbo in the Middle East will surely be the publicity coup of the week, but Boeing claims to have been outselling its rival in the region this year.

The Legendary Rock Band ’The Scorpions’ from Germany Give Concert in Cairo
on November 17, 2005
As part of its ’Middle East Tour 2005 – Peace for All' the legendary rock band ’The Scorpions’ from Germany will give a concert in Cairo (next to the pyramids of Giza) on November 17, 2005. 'The Scorpions’ - world famous for their songs such as 'Wind of Change" or 'Still Loving You' - will present their hits on acoustic instead of on conventional electrical guitars, based on the unplugged album Acoustica.

The event is organised by the Cairo based Sports Plus. Tickets will be sold through Virgin Mega Store and Cilantro cafés. Ticket values are 350 L.E. and 1200 L.E. (VIP Seated).

’The Scorpions’ are considered one of the most successful German rock bands ever. The worldwide top single of 1991, 'Wind of Change', became the hymn to freedom in Eastern Europe and to the end of the Cold War. In 1996, ’The Scorpions’ were the first international hard rock band to play in Beirut after the civil war in Lebanon. Their songs and words cover global issues and reflect what people around the globe feel about life.

Musically, their compositions span the spectrum between driving rock riffs and deeply emotional power rock ballads.

For more information on the event, please contact Sports Plus, Mr. Garo Varjabedian, Tel. 02 - 4183470 or 6907066 or e-mail to info@elestaad.com.

Body & Soul

Tour D'Afrique 2006

On January 14th, 2006, in the gentle mist of the African dawn, a group of intrepid and strong-willed men and women will begin a journey of both body and soul as they pedal their way through an epic adventure like no other.

Welcome to the fourth annual Tour d'Afrique, an 11,900-kilometer (7,438-mile) bicycle race/expedition across the world's most exotic and alluring continent.

The Cairo to Cape Town route will challenge you physically and mentally like no other - and reward you as you have never been rewarded before, with scenes of unsurpassed splendor and an incomparable feeling of accomplishment.

The mandate is threefold: first, to create an athletic event for both amateurs and professionals; second, to foster international goodwill; and third, raise funds to promote bicycles in Africa.Tour d' Afrique Foundation.

Racers will start each day’s stage at the signal from the race director. The pace is fast, and each racer contests every day of the 99 stages of the tour. It is a exceptional and epic race requiring unique equipment, intense motivation, and the constant struggle to keep yourself and your equipment in top working order in, sometimes, unfavourable conditions.

Traveling through 10 countries in all, you will cycle past ancient temples, through game reserves teeming with wildlife, across the foothills of legendary Mount Kilimanjaro, alongside the rugged and biblical landscape of Ethiopia's Simian Mountains, and the edge of Botswana's magnificent Kalahari. (See Route).

The program features approximately 99 cycling days, averaging 120 km (75 miles) each, broken up by 20 rest days and a day of travel for a total of 120 days in Africa. Support trucks will collect your equipment and travel ahead to set up camp.

Individual entry fees are $8,800 US. This will cover your basic needs throughout the tour. Participants will be responsible for their own transportation to and from Africa.

Those who complete the event will savor the triumph of conquering the longest and most difficult bike race in the history of sport. For some, they also seek certain additional classification such as reaching EFI status, winning a stage, winning a section or country, or winning the entire tour in either the men’s or women’s category. Commemorative festivities and celebrations, special medals await victorious cyclists. We look forward to celebrating with you.

There are four types of participants:
1. Racers: open to individuals who plan to go all the way.
2. Expedition riders: will cover the distance at their own pace.
3. Relay teams: 'corporate' or 'club' teams where each team member races a section of the trip and passes the "baton" to his teammate at predetermined stops.
4. Sectional riders: will ride a section of the trip

The Tour d’Afrique race and expedition are open to any individuals over the age 18 who have undertaken a medical examination to ensure that they are physically capable of partaking in this journey. Individuals under 18 must provide release from their legal guardian in order to partake, and no one under the age of 16 years is eligible.

If you're up for the adventure of a life time, there is still time to register. Visit www.tourdafrique.com or call Shanny Hill, Toronto, 416 364 8255. email shanny@tourdafrique.com

New HIV/AIDS counselling and testing centres open in Egypt
© UNICEF Egypt/2005/ Pirrozi

CAIRO, October 2005 - To most Egyptians, AIDS is a problem for other people to worry about. The disease has already claimed millions of lives worldwide, but – on the surface at least – its impact in Egypt has been minimal.

The official statistics are reassuring: According to UNAIDS, the estimated prevalence of HIV in Egypt in 2003 was less than 0.1 per cent of the population aged between 15 and 49.

The number of adults and children living with HIV was estimated at 12,000 in a population of around 70 million. But a number of factors – an overwhelmingly youthful population being one of them – have prompted concern that the situation could worsen unless prompt measures are taken.

One issue has been the lack of provision for people to be tested for the virus without revealing their identity. The government is now beginning to address this problem, by opening a number of Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centres (VCTCs) around the country. The hope is that the promise of anonymity will encourage those most at risk of contracting the disease – such as commercial sex workers, intravenous drug users and men having sex with men – to go for testing.

Spaghetti with prosciutto and broccoli pesto

Try this delightful combination of prosciutto with broccoli. This vegetable not only offers a range of nutritional and therapeutic benefits, but is also often preferred by children.

  • Spaghetti 350 g
  • Roman broccoli 200 g
  • Prosciutto 70 g
  • Cherries tomato 12 no.
  • Anchovy filets 3 no.
  • Red hot pepper 1 no.
  • Extra virgin olive oil 6 tablespoons
  • Garlic 0.50 glove
  • Parmesan cheese to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Suggested Wine
For this strongly aromatic, slightly sweet and spicy dish, choose a medium-bodied, smooth but fresh white, such as a Lugana or a Bianco Colli di Imola.

1. Boil the broccoli in abundant salted water and drain when tender but still firm. Keep the most attractive tips to garnish the plates, using the rest for the pesto.

2. Pour five tablespoons of oil in a mixer, add the broccoli, the anchovy filets, a capsicum, half a clove of garlic and a few tablespoons of the water used to cook the broccoli. Add salt and pepper, then blend the ingredients until the mixture is smooth and even.

3. Lightly brown the prosciutto cut into strips and the broccoli tips in a little olive oil.

4. Cook the Spaghetti in abundant salted water, drain when al dente and dress with the pesto and the cherry tomatoes cut in four. Top with the prosciutto and the broccoli, garnish with a few scales of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.

* To ensure that the broccoli keep their lively green colour, drain them after cooking and place them in a bowl filled with iced water.
* Don't brown the prosciutto for too long, as it will dry out.
