History of Halloween

The celebration of Halloween today is a mixture of rituals and celebrations from a lot of different people. The earliest origin is from the Celts, who lived in Scotland.

On October 31, they celebrated what they called Samhain (pronounced So-in). It was the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the cold, dark winters.

The Celts believed that on Oct 31, the Lord of Death released souls back to Earth.

On October 31, the Celts wore scary costumes because they believed that then the evil spirits wouldn't recognize them as humans and wouldn't mess with them. This is probably where the tradition of dressing up in costumes on Halloween came from.

When the Romans conquered the Celts in 46 AD, the combined the Celtic rituals with their own harvest celebrations: this is where apples (as in Bobbing for Apples) and corn came into the celebration.
As Christianity spread, the church combined the non-Christian celebration with their own celebration of All Saints' Day (also called All Hallows' Day, celebrated on Nov 1). To celebrate all Saints' Day, young men went door-to-door asking for food for the poor. This is one of the places Trick-or-Treating came from!
One more thing. Wonder where the whole Jack-o-Lantern thing came from? Well, before there were flashlights and such, Irish people used to carve out turnips and put a candle in them for a lantern. When they came to America, they noticed there weren't many turnips, but lots and lots of pumpkins, so they used them instead!

INFORMATION - from Red Sea Association

On 7th august 2004, the Red Sea saw its first artificial wreck reef become a reality, this pionering project undertaken by the red sea association for diving and water sports with the full support of HE General Saad Abo Rida and with funding obtained from the NGO service centre aimed to :
  • Alleviate the pressure on some of the over used dive sites in the Hurghada area to help rejuvenate the reefs in those sites.
  • Add to the attractions of Hurghada as a dive destination.

A little over a year since it was sunk, the Hebat Allah is now being resurrected as Hurghada newest dive site open for divers, it has taken so long for two main considerations:

  • To give the wreck time to settle in its new home and for corals and marine life to start animating it.
  • Due to the depth of the wreck ( 45 MSW at the bottom) as opposed to the originally planned depth of 30 MSW meant that this could not be open to the general diving population and the association has conducted a number of evaluation dives on the wreck with the participation of some of the directors, managers and chief instructors of some of Hurghada dive centres and the president of the Egyptian diving and life saving federation Dr Mohamed saleh to determine if and how the site should be opened for divers.

We are now pleased to announce that Hebat Allah is now back to life as a dive site within the following limits as approved by the Egyptian diving federation;

  • Divers must have a minimum of 100 logged dives and be certified as CMAS 3 star divers or equivalent e.g. Dive master with PADI,NAUI,SDI / BSAC sport diver / SSI dive control specialist
  • Only one dive per day is allowed on the wreck as diving the Hebat Allah will inevitably require staged decompression.
  • A maximum of three boats are allowed to moor on the site at any one time, this is very important to adhere to ensure the sustained integrity of the wreck and for the enjoyment of the divers.
  • It is strongly recommended that dive centres and dive guides do not allow full penetration of the Hebat Allah except for divers who are certified to do that( such as full cave and advanced wreck qualifications).

The association in cooperation with HEPCA and the EEAA will be installing three mooring buoys for dive boats and also put in place three shot lines to assist divers complete their decompression stops safely and comfortably (these shot line ARE NOT TO BE USED FOR MOORING OF BOATS).

Dive safely, enjoy and protect.
