It’s Shark Season with Camel Dive Club, Sharm el Sheikh!

Heard the story about the tiger sharks? For once it’s not just a rumour that started after a few beers in the Camel Bar. Local dive guides have seen some rather large sharks in Sharm’s waters recently. Three tiger sharks have been cruising around Ras Mohammed National Park. They join our regular summer visitors the black tip sharks, and schools of hundreds of barracuda, snapper, trevally and unicorn fish gathering at Shark Reef.

The Straits of Tiran also provides shark-spotting opportunities. With calm conditions and a little luck, a school of up to 20 hammerhead sharks can be found just behind Jackson Reef. Jump next to the wreck of the Lara, head away from the reef at 20m and wait. There is no need to search, the hammerheads will come to you – they are very inquisitive!

So, want to enjoy world-class diving and some shark spotting? Camel Dive Club runs daily boat diving trips to Ras Mohammed or Tiran. Camel Dive Club is one of the longest-established dive centres in Na’ama Bay, Sharm’s main resort area. It is a PADI 5* Gold Palm IDC centre offering courses, tec diving, kids activities, snorkeling, and guided boat dives.

For comfortable 3-4* accommodation, Camel Hotel is designed by divers, for divers. It’s next to the dive centre, just 5 minutes’ walk from the jetty. With 38 rooms, the Hotel is small and friendly. There is a vast range of après-dive options, including the famous Camel Bar and Roof , an award-winning Tandoori Indian restaurant, and Pomodoro offering grilled specialities and home-made pizza.

British Man Arrested in Egypt for Smuggling Antiquities

A Briton is being held in Egypt after trying to smuggle 66 manuscripts out of the country, airport officials said. The texts, identified by experts as being from the Islamic era, are said to have been subject to an export ban. They were found in the man's luggage after an X-ray at Cairo airport as he headed for a flight to Paris. Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities is clamping down on smugglers and has threatened to cut links with foreign museums that illegally buy artefacts. Earlier this month seven Egyptians were jailed in Cairo after a seizure at London's Heathrow Airport uncovered the country's biggest antiquities smuggling case. Officials said the documents seized from the Briton on Monday cover topics ranging from medicine to magic, as well as detailing excerpts from the Bible in both Arabic and the ancient language of Egypt's Christians.

Egyptian first lady opens library in Hurghada

Thursday 25 August 2005.

Aug 25, 2005 — Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak opened Tuesday Mubarak’s Public Library in Hurghada (Egypt). Mrs. Mubarak had a cordial dialogue with a group of the children who were on hand to welcome her at the Library.

Meanwhile, Sudanese politicians and intellectuals representing all political trends called on Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak to open in Khartoum a book fair as part of the "Reading for All Festival" she had been sponsoring for years with a view to spreading culture and knowledge in Sudan.

This came during the inauguration of the first Khartoum International Book Fair, which turned into an event signaling appreciation and recognition of Egypt’s educational and cultural role in the Arab world in general and in Sudan in particular.

Egypt’s ambassador to Sudan Mohamed Abdel Moneim al-Shazli told a press conference at the Egyptian pavilion that Arab and Islamic cultures started with a call for reading, adding that the exhortation "Read!" was the first command revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

Painted T-Shirt

Kids are generally discouraged from applying food to their clothing, but this craft provides a chance to bend the rules.

• Cardboard
• Prewashed white cotton T-shirt
• Masking tape
• Pie plates
• Nontoxic fabric paint
• Knife
• Fruits and/or vegetables
• Paper towels
• Newspaper

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

Step 1:
Slip the cardboard inside the shirt, stretch the shirt tightly around it, and tape the sleeves and sides to the back.
Step 2:
Set out pie plates and pour a different color of paint into each. Cut open the fruits and veggies (a parents job) and use a paper towel to blot the produce.
Step 3:
Next, press the stamps into the paint. Do a test run on newspaper, showing kids how to press firmly without squeezing out any juice. When ready, move on to the shirts. Try patterns, landscapes, silly faces or abstract designs.
Step 4:
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for setting the paint.

Any produce that's not too juicy will work, so get creative. Onions make good circles; apples cut lengthwise look like butterflies; broccoli and mushrooms resemble trees; a cantaloupe wedge or pea pod makes a lovely smile.

Chicken Yumsticks

These chicken kebobs, which owe their moistness to a yogurt marinade, can be cooked up on a outdoor grill.

2-3 plain low-fat yogurt
2 tsp. brown sugar
2 tsp. hot sauce, plus extra to eat with the chicken
1 tsp. ground cumin
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 tsp. salt
8 chicken breast halves
Lemon wedges (optional)

  • Combine a few tablespoons of the yogurt with the brown sugar in a medium-sized bowl and mix until well blended. Add the remaining yogurt, hot sauce, cumin, garlic and salt.
  • Cut each chicken breast half into 6 to 8 equal pieces.
  • Add to the yogurt mixture and stir until well combined. Thread the chicken onto eight skewers. Pace it into a glas or plastic container if possible with a lid, or close with Plastic foil (to guard against leaks).
  • Chill for 30 minutes to 2 hours. .
  • Prepare the coals for grilling. Grill the kebobs over medium heat, rotating sides every few minutes, until cooked through, about 10 to 14 minutes total.
  • Serve with extra hot sauce and lemon wedges. Serves 6 to 8.

While you have the grill going, cook up some veggie kebobs to serve alongside the chicken. Simply thread cherry tomatoes, zucchini, onion and other vegetables on skewers, brush with olive oil, and cook until slightly tender.
