YOLANDA WRECK dicovered at 145 m !!

by Seamus Forde

Project Yolanda they called it, that is, the mad tech divers from Sharm. A one week project on board Diavola started on 22nd of May with preparations of Equipment and dive plans. And a Check dive to 80M!!! With search and rescue staff on board and a doctor standing by all safety precautions were taken. Local dives were made 23rd and 24th to build up nitrogen narcosis immunity to depths of  80-100M.
On the 25th of May exploration began, Leigh Cunningham descended 150M away from the Yolanda reef as the Depth sounder indicated bottom at 100M+ A short search at around 80M revealed a sand slide had occurred and finding the Yolanda may be more difficult that expected. Tons of cargo lay strewn around the reefs. Containers, metal sheets and even an anchor were found in the scar Yolanda had cut in the sand. They were on the trail for sure.
Next day 26th May, after comparing dive maps the night before Leigh and Mark decided their route. Unfortunately Mark got Mummy's Revenge and Leigh had to go alone. He followed the sand valley made by the Yolanda but got taken a little off course at 130M. As this was the first MIX dive time didn't allow much exploration but the sand revealed large metal protrusions sticking out and the shadow of the Yolanda came into view. 103 minutes later Leigh was on the surface grinning like a cat that swallowed a bird. She was found.
27th was the final day, a day for consolidation and most of all photo's!! But due to the depth, the video diver was unable to dive and she even had doubts her housing would hold out at 145M!! Leigh returned alone and circled wreck confirming she was intact but mostly submerged in the sand. Therefore; wait for next instalment of Project Yolanda 2 when video will be provided by a trimix diver!!!

SA man sets record for world's deepest dive in the Red Sea
June 13, 2005

By Jonathan Ancer

Johannesburg: South African scuba supremo Nuno Gomes is the world's deepest diver. On Friday, after 12 hours and 20 minutes in the Red Sea, Gomes surfaced with a new world record under his belt. Official measurements revealed that he had reached a depth
of 318.25m.

Gomes, a 52-year-old engineer, had reached a depth that was the equivalent of the length of the Eiffel Tower - including the aerial at the top. Although Gomes had planned to go to 320m, his 318.25m plunge was still enough to beat the record of 313m, set by Mark Ellyatt in Thailand in 2003.

Speaking from Dahab at the weekend, Gareth Lowndes, one of the support divers and the Chairman of the Wits Underwater Club, said that after his mammoth dive Gomes had surfaced looking tired but well. He had been given oxygen as a precautionary measure, but no decompression treatment had been required, Lowndes said. It had taken Gomes about 20 minutes to reach 318.25m, and 12 hours to surface. Colwin Setzhorn, from the Scubaversity Diving School, explained that minute-by-minute planning had gone into the dive."Everything had to be worked out. Nuno would have a different mix of gases for different depths. Attention to detail is so crucial it's scary," he said.

The planning had started as soon as Gomes returned from his record attempt in the Red Sea in July last year. Lowndes said that last year Gomes had dived to 271m, but he had been unable to achieve the world record because of equipment failure. According to Lowndes, the main risks of such a dive are nitrogen decompression illness, oxygen toxicity, dehydration and the counter-diffusion of gases (while changing over tanks containing different gas mixtures, the helium wants to leave the blood while the nitrogen wants to rush in). "To reduce the risks, each team member is allocated specific tasks. If the task is not completed, then the chain breaks down. There is double checking and triple checking."

According to Lowndes, the list of divers who requested an invitation to the Red Sea had been enormous. "Nuno selected those people he feels comfortable and safe with. It's a family. It is an honour. "You never hear Nuno say 'I'. He always says 'we' are going to do something. It's a team. We are all equal, but one member descended to just about 320m." Gomes is one of only a handful of divers who have been below 250m. In fact, more people have gone to the moon than have gone to that depth. He now holds the world records for the deepest sea and deepest cave dives. In 1996, Gomes descended into the inky blackness of Boesmansgat, in the Northern Cape, 282.6m under water.

Pencil Decoration Flower Craft

Supplies needed:

  • Construction paper, gift wrap (2-sided is best), or any paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • A pencil
  • Markers (optional)

Cut a long strip of paper (about the size of half a piece of notebook paper).

If the paper is plain, decorate it with markers (on both sides).

Fold the paper in half, and then in half again.

Cut a series of slits in the folded paper - do not cut all the way through to the ends, leave a small section uncut.

Unfold the paper. Tape one end of the uncut portion to the eraser end of the pencil.

Roll the paper around the pencil. When you've rolled it all, tape the end of the paper to the pencil.

Gently push the pieces of paper away from the eraser, making it look like a flower.

You now have a cute, decorated pencil.
