Red Sea Water May Prevent Drying up of Dead Sea
Palestine Media Center – PMC
Palestinian, Jordanian and Israeli cabinet ministers signed in Jordan Monday a $20 million feasibility study into the building of a 110-mile (170km) canal linking the Red Sea to the Dead Sea, that would pump seawater uphill from Aqaba before dropping it into the lowest body of water on earth, in a project estimated to cost over $3.5 billion.
Palestinian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Ghassan al-Khatib, Jordanian Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Saud and Israeli Minister of Infrastructures Benjamin Ben-Eliezer signed the feasibility study Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of a “peace water carrier” as well as a related letter to the World Bank that would partly finance the study.
The signing meeting was held on the Jordanian side of the Dead Sea.
“At this stage, it's a feasibility study. It could take two years. The experts from all sides will check the project from environmental and economic aspects,” said the Palestinian Planning Minister al-Khatib.
Israeli Infrastructure Minister Ben-Eliezer highlighted the political importance of the event.
“The tripartite meeting is of political importance as it contributes to the advancement and closer ties among the countries of the region,” he said.
Both Israeli and Jordanian officials have said the project would cement Arab-Israeli regional economic integration.
The study will examine five main subjects: The environmental impact on the Gulf of Aqaba from pumping out water; the environmental impact on Wadi Arava from the transit of water;
The canal’s main purpose would be to prevent the Dead Sea drying up, provide fresh drinking supplies for water-starved Jordan and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), as well as hydro- electric power.
Under the canal project, the water would be taken out of the Red Sea at Aqaba in southern Jordan, raised 170 meters above sea level and then allowed to descend to the Dead Sea, at 417 meters below sea level.
The Dead Sea’s level has fallen by a third since the 1960s, 27 meters in the last 50 years, and continues to drop by up to a meter a year, mainly after Israel diverted much of the River Jordan water resources to its southern desert areas.
Israeli and Jordanian officials told Reuters the study would focus mostly on the project's environmental impact.
The plan could take a decade, Jordanian officials said, adding the canal would generate 850 million cubic meters of drinking and agricultural water.
The huge costs and the risks of damaging the Red Sea's coral reef and diluting the Dead Sea's medicinal properties along with political tensions have so far stood in the way of the project, Reuters indicated.

Aussie clinches squash title
May 16, 2005

Australian world No.1 Rachael Grinham staged a remarkable comeback to beat Egyptian second-seed Omneya Abdel Kawy in five games and retain her Hurghada International squash title in Egypt tonight.

The Queensland top seed appeared to be in real strife when she was hammered 9-1 9-2 in the opening two games by the world No.10, whom she also beat in last year's final.

But Cairo-based Grinham fought back to take the next two games 9-4 9-3 and then won a thrilling decider 10-8 to claim her second title of the year and 19th career victory.
