British Airways to start scheduled flights to Sharm El Sheik and Hurghada
British Airways will start a schedule of direct flights to Sharm El Sheik and Hurghada from October 22, 2005.

British Airways will start a schedule of direct flights to Sharm El Sheik and Hurghada from October 22, 2005.

The flights, operated by franchise partner GB Airways, will offer a service of three times a week from London Gatwick Airport to Sharm El Sheik and twice a week to Hurghada. These will be the first direct scheduled services between the UK and the Red Sea Riviera.

With these new routes, British Airways is now servicing four different cities in Egypt: Cairo, Alexandria, Sharm El Sheik and Hurghada.

John Patterson, GB Airways Managing Director, said, 'We are delighted to start this unique service to the Red Sea resorts of Sharm El Sheik and Hurghada, which are becoming steadily more popular with British tourists over the years.

'Many of our tour operators have expressed a desire for direct schedule services to the Red Sea Riviera, and I am confident that all involved in tourism, and visitors to the area will enjoy the benefits of being served by British Airways flights.'

All the Sharm El Sheik and Hurghada flights are operated by Airbus aircraft with a choice of Club Europe and Euro Traveller cabins, with complimentary food and drinks served, and the seating equipped with more legroom than many other carriers.

'Attacks won't harm tourism'
01/05/2005 21:28  - (SA)

Dubai - The head of Egypt's main hotel group sought on Sunday to play down the impact of attacks by Islamist militants on his country's vital tourism industry, saying they were "isolated incidents" perpetrated by "isolated people." "In a week or two, the whole incident will be totally over," Samih Sawiris, chairman of Orascom Hotels and Development, told AFP in Dubai, where he was attending a conference on the hotel industry in the Arab world."It's not al-Qaeda trying to topple the (Egyptian) regime... That's just an annoying thing," he said, referring to the network of Saudi-born Osama bin Laden. Egypt detained about 200 people and stepped up security around its tourist attractions on Sunday after Islamists targeted foreigners in two separate attacks in Cairo.

"People will take the thing in the right context," Sawiris said of Saturday's suicide bombing and shooting, which revived memories of a wave of Islamist violence that targeted tourists in Egypt in the 1990s."It's the same people, the same family, the same group... These are five or six people that got together," he said. Sawiris dismissed comparisons between the latest attacks and those in 1997, the worst of which saw 62 people, including 58 foreign holidaymakers, killed in the southern city of Luxor. At the time, "the world had not gotten used to the fact that there were crazy people in the world," he said. But the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States and last year's Madrid train bombings are "evidence that the crazy people exist all over the place," he added. Sawiris said Egypt, which boasted eight million foreign tourists last year, was intent on reaching the 10-million mark in 2005.

Saturday's attacks followed a bombing in Cairo's main tourist bazaar last month that the authorities had described as an "isolated incident." Two French nationals and an American died in the April 7 bombing, and those who died Saturday were reportedly linked to that attack. Orascom, which was set up in 1950 by Onsi Sawiris, is active in the construction, tourism and hi-tech sectors. Apart from Egypt, Orascom Hotels and Development runs hotels in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.

EGYPT - Nazif tours red sea tourist facilities tourism revenues up by 30 %

Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Nazif made an inspection tour of the Red Sea Governorate Sunday, visiting Marsa Alam Airport, which is expected to receive around 5 million passengers a year when it is completed. The first phase of the airport was inaugurated in October 2001.

Dr. Nazif's tour also took him to Ghalib Marina, still under construction. Work on the marina, which is expected to boost Red Sea tourism, is due to be completed this summer.

Egypt bookings hold firm

Tour operators are reporting that there has been no drop in bookings to Egypt following the recent bombing in Cairo.

Egypt has proved to be a particularly popular winter-sun destination with holidaymakers in recent months. There were fears that the explosion, on April 7, would put travellers off the country's resorts.
