The decision affects all categories of ships using the canal, one of the world's major waterways which links the Mediterranean with the Red Sea.

By the end of 2004 a total of 16,700 vessels are expected to have passed throug the canal, an increase of some seven percent on 15,667 last year. Total cargo using the canal should reach 600 million tonnes, up 12 percent on last year's 550 million. Income is expected to hit some three billion dollars in 2004 against 2.5 billion last year, with container ships the biggest users of the canal.

Egypt's Internet Market to Keep Growing

Egypt’s Internet market is projected to grow at double digits in the coming five years. New research from the Arab Advisors Group on Egypt’s Internet and Datacomm market shows that Egypt’s Internet market is growing strongly.

Spurred by infrastructure-based competition and government initiatives, Egypt’s Internet accounts are projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 23.7% between 2003 and 2008. Internet accounts are projected to grow by 2.5% to reach around 1.9m by end of 2008. Internet users are expected to grow by a rate of 7.4% to reach 5.6m by the end of 2008. Egypt’s subscription-free Internet service has generated revenues amounting to $66.2m between January 2002 and August 2004. The Free Internet Initiative, which was launched in January 2002, has enabled users to access the Internet from any phone line, without the need for a dial up subscription, and for the cost of a local phone call.

Egypt Claim Title Double at Pan Arab Golf Championships

Egypt's young golfing talent was the toast of the region recently after winning both the Under-18 and Under-15 team titles at the 5th Pan Arab Junior Golf Championships in Dubai. Playing over the testing Majlis Course at the Emirates Golf Club, the Egyptian Under-18 pairing of Spirow Marmaras and Amr Nagi shot rounds of 83 and 81, which was enough to take the title by just three shots from nearest rivals Ali El Zein and Samer Souma of Lebanon.
